Chapter 2: A Feeling He Couldn't Ignore
The rain had slowed down, turning into a soft drizzle.
The streetlights flickered gently, casting a warm glow over the quiet road.
Arjun and Meera stood under the small shelter of the bus stop.
For a moment—
Neither of them spoke.
Meera adjusted her grip on her books, still feeling a slight pain in her ankle.
"Thank you… again," she said softly.
Arjun nodded.
"It's nothing."
But deep inside—
He knew it wasn't nothing.
There was something strange about this moment.
Something he couldn't explain.
And that made him uncomfortable.
"Do you live nearby?" Meera asked, trying to break the silence.
Arjun hesitated.
"…Yeah."
"Same," she replied with a small smile. "I usually take this road after school."
Arjun didn't reply immediately.
His eyes moved slightly… scanning the empty street.
Left. Right.
As if he was checking something.
Meera noticed it.
"Are you looking for someone?"
Arjun shook his head.
"No."
But his expression said otherwise.
A cold breeze passed through the air.
Meera shivered slightly.
The rain had almost stopped now, but the atmosphere felt… different.
Heavier.
Arjun suddenly spoke—
"You shouldn't walk alone at this time."
Meera blinked.
"Huh?"
"There aren't many people around," he added, his voice calm but serious.
Meera gave a small laugh.
"I've been walking alone like this for years."
"That doesn't mean it's safe," Arjun replied.
Something in his tone made her stop smiling.
It didn't sound like a normal concern.
It sounded like a warning.
"…You're saying it like something bad will happen," she said slowly.
Arjun looked at her.
For a moment—
He almost said something.
Something important.
But then—
He stopped himself.
"…Just be careful," he said instead.
Meera frowned slightly.
"Careful of what?"
Arjun didn't answer.
The silence between them grew again.
But this time—
It felt heavier.
More uncomfortable.
A bus passed by in the distance, its headlights briefly lighting up the street.
For a second—
Meera thought she saw something move near the corner of the road.
A shadow.
She blinked.
And it was gone.
"…Did you see that?" she asked quietly.
Arjun's eyes immediately shifted in that direction.
Sharp. Focused.
"…See what?" he asked, though his expression had already changed.
"I thought I saw someone… or something…"
Arjun remained silent.
His jaw tightened slightly.
"Stay here," he said suddenly.
"What? Why—"
"I said stay here."
This time, his voice was firm.
Before Meera could say anything, Arjun stepped out into the dimly lit road.
Her heart started beating faster.
"What is he doing…?"
Arjun walked slowly toward the corner where she had seen the shadow.
Each step careful.
Controlled.
The air felt cold again.
Too cold.
Meera hugged herself slightly, watching him.
Something didn't feel right.
"Arjun…?" she called softly.
He didn't respond.
The streetlight above him flickered once.
Then again.
And for a brief moment—
His shadow…
Didn't match his movement.
Meera's eyes widened.
"What…?"
But before she could think further—
The light returned to normal.
Everything looked fine again.
Arjun turned back and walked toward her.
His expression calm.
Too calm.
"There's nothing," he said.
Meera stared at him.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes."
But for some reason—
She didn't believe him.
Because deep inside—
She could feel it.
Something was watching them.
Something unseen.
Arjun looked at her one last time.
"You should go home now."
Meera nodded slowly.
"…Okay."
She took a few steps… then stopped.
"Arjun."
He looked at her.
"Will I see you tomorrow?"
For a moment—
He didn't answer.
Then finally—
"…Yeah."
A small smile appeared on her face.
"Okay."
She turned and started walking away.
Arjun stood there, watching her leave.
His expression slowly changing.
Becoming serious.
Cold.
"…It's starting already," he whispered to himself.
The wind blew softly.
And somewhere in the darkness—
Something moved.
