Chapter 2 - The Power. Within

The silver light exploded outward.

A surge of energy burst from Lyra's body, sending a powerful shockwave through the forest. Leaves scattered violently, branches snapped, and the ground beneath her trembled as if the earth itself had awakened.

The rogue wolf let out a startled snarl as it was thrown backward, crashing into a tree with a heavy thud.

Lyra gasped, her chest heaving as she stared at her glowing hands.

"What… what is this?" she whispered.

The light flickered like living moonlight wrapped around her fingers, soft yet powerful. It didn't burn—it felt warm, almost comforting, like it belonged to her.

The rogue growled again, struggling to its feet. Its eyes, once filled with hunger, now held something else.

Fear.

Lyra's heart pounded. She had never seen a rogue hesitate before.

"Stay back!" she shouted, though her voice trembled.

The wolf took a cautious step forward, testing her. Its muscles tensed, ready to attack again—but this time, it moved slower, uncertain.

Lyra swallowed hard.

She didn't know how she had done it. She didn't know if she could do it again.

But she had to try.

She lifted her trembling hand, focusing on the strange warmth inside her chest. "Go away," she whispered, more to herself than to the wolf.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Panic began to rise.

Then—

The silver light pulsed again, brighter this time.

A sharp wave of energy shot forward, slamming into the rogue before it could react. The wolf yelped, its body skidding across the forest floor. It scrambled up, backing away this time.

Not attacking.

Retreating.

Lyra stared in disbelief.

It was leaving.

The rogue let out one last warning growl before turning and disappearing into the darkness of the forest.

Silence fell once again.

But this time, it wasn't suffocating.

It was… stunned.

Lyra's legs gave out beneath her, and she collapsed to the ground, her breathing uneven. The silver glow around her hands slowly faded until there was nothing left but her shaking fingers.

"What just happened?" she whispered.

Her heart was still racing, but something deep inside her had changed.

She could feel it.

Like a door had been opened… one that could never be closed again.

The night grew colder.

Lyra wrapped her arms around herself, trying to steady her breathing. The forest was still dangerous, and she was still alone—but now, there was a new thought pushing through her fear.

I'm not weak.

The idea felt strange.

Unfamiliar.

But for the first time in her life… it didn't feel like a lie.

A distant howl echoed through the trees.

Lyra froze.

That sound—she recognized it.

It was from her pack.

Relief flooded her chest. "They came back…"

Without wasting another second, she pushed herself to her feet and followed the sound, moving quickly despite her exhaustion. Branches scratched at her arms, and her feet ached with every step, but she didn't stop.

She couldn't.

She needed to get back.

As she drew closer, voices began to rise above the howls.

"Spread out!"

"Find her!"

Lyra's heart lifted. They were looking for her.

Maybe… maybe they did care.

"I'm here!" she called out, her voice cracking. "I'm here!"

The voices went quiet for a moment.

Then—

Footsteps approached.

Figures emerged from the shadows, their expressions hard and unreadable. At the front stood Beta Ronan, his tall frame rigid, his sharp eyes locking onto her.

Behind him were the same girls who had left her.

Lyra's relief faltered.

"You're alive," Ronan said flatly.

Lyra nodded quickly. "Y-yes… I got lost, and then there was a rogue, and I—"

"A rogue?" one of the girls interrupted, her eyes widening slightly.

Lyra hesitated. "Yes, but I'm okay. It left."

Ronan's gaze sharpened. "Rogues don't just leave."

Lyra's fingers curled slightly. She couldn't tell them the truth. If they found out… if they saw what she could do…

Fear crept back into her chest.

"I—I hid," she said quickly. "It must have lost interest."

The group exchanged looks, but no one questioned her further.

"Let's go," Ronan ordered. "The Alpha will want to hear about this."

Lyra lowered her gaze and followed them, her earlier hope fading with each step.

No one asked if she was hurt.

No one apologized for leaving her behind.

And the girls who had done it… they didn't even look at her.

When they returned to the pack, the atmosphere was tense.

Torches lit the clearing, casting flickering shadows across the gathered wolves. At the center stood Alpha Kael, his powerful presence commanding silence.

Lyra felt her stomach twist.

His cold eyes fell on her immediately.

"So," he said, his deep voice cutting through the air, "this is the omega who caused trouble."

Lyra's chest tightened. "I didn't mean to—"

"You were assigned a simple task," he interrupted sharply. "And yet, you managed to attract a rogue to our territory."

"That's not true," she said softly. "I didn't—"

"Enough."

The single word silenced her.

Alpha Kael stepped closer, his gaze piercing. "Weakness invites danger. Your presence alone is a risk to this pack."

Each word felt like a blow.

Lyra lowered her head, her hands trembling at her sides.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

"You always are," he replied coldly.

A few wolves chuckled quietly.

Lyra swallowed the lump in her throat, forcing back the sting of tears.

"From now on," Kael continued, "you will not leave the inner grounds without supervision. You've proven you cannot handle even the simplest responsibility."

"Yes, Alpha," she murmured.

"Dismissed."

Lyra turned quickly, walking away before anyone could see the tears slipping down her cheeks.

Later that night, she sat alone behind one of the storage huts, staring up at the full moon.

Its pale light bathed the world in silver.

Her chest tightened.

Slowly, she lifted her hand.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then—

A faint silver glow flickered to life.

Lyra's breath caught.

It was real.

It hadn't been a dream.

She wasn't imagining it.

Something inside her had awakened.

Something powerful.

Something dangerous.

She clenched her fist, the light disappearing instantly.

"They can't know," she whispered to herself.

If the pack found out… they wouldn't see it as a gift.

They would see it as a threat.

And threats were eliminated.

Lyra looked back up at the moon, her silver eyes reflecting its light.

For the first time, a new emotion stirred within her.

Not fear.

Not sadness.

But determination.

"I won't stay weak," she said quietly.

No matter what they thought.

No matter what they said.

She would find out what she was.

And when she did—

Everything would change.
