Chapter 10 - Chapter 10

PRESSURE

Work didn't slow down. if anything, it got louder.

You could feel it the moment you walked into Venn Holdings.

Security at the entrance was tighter. IT staff moved around more than usual. People whispered in corners. Doors shut quickly when someone walked by.

Maya felt the tension immediately as she stepped out of the elevator. Something was happening.

Not on the surface, but beneath it.

Mark was already at his desk, typing away as if his life depended on it.

He barely looked up. "Morning. It's going to be a long day."

She nodded. She already knew.

Inside his office, Alexander stood behind his desk. His jacket was off and his sleeves rolled up. He looked like he hadn't slept much.

He gestured to a chair. "Sit."

She sat. "We've launched a full internal investigation," he said. "Cybersecurity is tracking the attempted tampering. Access logs, remote entries, everything."

"That's good sir," Maya replied calmly. "Because whoever did it will try to cover their tracks."

His eyes lifted slightly. "You think they'll try again?"

"Yes. When people panic, they make more moves. Sometimes worse."

He studied her quietly

And for a brief second, just a second, his mind drifted.

She was calm and steady, with no fear in her eyes.

She's pretty.

The thought came out of nowhere.

He blinked once. Where did that come from?

His heartbeat shifted slightly. He cleared his throat and refocused.

She didn't shrink under his gaze. She didn't soften her tone. She didn't act impressed.

Most people did.

"You don't hesitate," he said quietly.

"I think first, then I speak."

A faint smile touched his face. "Keep doing that."

By mid-morning, IT had made progress.

Mark walked in with a tablet. "Sir, we traced the badge used to alter the records a few days ago."

Alexander looked up. "Who?"

Mark hesitated slightly. "It traces back to Daniel's department."

Silence filled the room.

Maya didn't react right away.

Alexander's expression didn't change, but something in his eyes hardened. "Directly Daniel?" he asked.

"No. One of his junior analysts."

Maya leaned in a little. "That analyst could have been told to do it."

"Or the analyst acted alone," Mark replied carefully.

Alexander straightened. "Call Daniel."

Daniel walked in ten minutes later as if nothing was wrong. Calm and in control.

"You wanted to see me?"

"One of your department's badges was used in the tampering attempt," Alexander said directly.

Daniel blinked once. "That's serious."

"It is."

Daniel's gaze shifted to Maya. "And I assume this discovery came from our very observant assistant?"

Maya met his eyes. "It came from the security logs."

He held her stare a moment too long. There was something in his expression—a mix of challenge and something softer he didn't want to admit.

She didn't look away.

For a moment, he wondered what it would be like to have someone that bold on his side instead of against him.

The thought surprised him. He brushed it aside quickly.

Alexander noticed the look.

Something tightened in his chest; it felt protective.

"Daniel," Alexander said coolly, "are you having trouble managing your team?"

Daniel shifted his focus back to him. "I'll handle my staff. If someone acted without authorization, they'll answer for it."

"Make sure they do," Alexander replied.

Daniel nodded once and left.

When the door closed, Maya exhaled quietly. "He knew," she said.

"Maybe," Alexander replied.

"You don't believe the analyst acted alone."

"No."

She crossed her arms slightly. "Then why not confront him fully now?"

Alexander walked slowly around his desk. "Because when someone feels cornered, they become careful. Right now, they're nervous. Nervous people make mistakes. I'd rather watch them slip again than warn them to hide better."

She nodded slowly. That made sense.

He noticed how she processed everything before reacting.

Calm and strategic. It drew him in more than he wanted to admit.

The investigations deepened over the next few days. Security footage was reviewed again. Badge entries were checked twice.

Maya sat beside Mark for hours. "Look at this," she said, pointing at a spreadsheet. "Every time a contract is reassigned to a different department , it is after a staff is replaced ."

Mark leaned closer. "You're right."

"This isn't coincidence. Someone changes people first, then moves the money"

Alexander stood behind them, listening. "You notice patterns quickly," he said.

She shrugged lightly. "I just prefer not to assume things are accidental."

Daniel walked in mid-discussion. "You're still digging?" he asked.

"Yes," Alexander answered.

Daniel's eyes moved to Maya again. "You really believe you'll find something?"

Maya answered before Alexander could. "We already have."

His jaw tightened slightly. He stepped closer to her desk. "You seem very confident."

"Well, I need to be clear about things," she replied.

"You enjoy proving people wrong?"

She looked up at him. "I just like things being clean and honest."

That hit hard.

For a moment, he just stared at her.

Then he leaned in slightly. "Be careful. Sometimes asking too many questions causes problems."

She didn't blink. "And sometimes avoiding questions causes bigger ones," she replied quietly.

The room went still.

Alexander stepped forward, creating space between them to protect Maya.

"If you have concerns, Daniel, speak to me," he said firmly. "She's acting on my instruction."

Daniel stepped back slightly. "I understand," he said.

But something else was in his expression now. Daniel wasn't just defensive; he was also engaged and curious.

That night, the office finally emptied. The lights dimmed, and the city glowed below.

Alexander sat alone in his office, replaying the day. Maya's calm voice. Daniel's reaction.

Frustration rose within him. How could his own family risk the company like this? Scheming, manipulating, quietly shifting money.

He leaned back in his chair. But his thoughts kept drifting.

Not to the board, but to her.

Why did her voice linger in his head longer than the board arguments? Why did her confidence feel grounding? It was different.

He wasn't used to different.

She had been distracting him lately.

He had worked with many women before. Most were drawn to his name, his position, or his money. He was never interested.

But Maya? She didn't care about any of that.

She challenged him, spoke freely, and looked him in the eye. That made his heart race a little faster.

He exhaled sharply. This is work. She's your assistant. Nothing more.

But staying focused around her was becoming harder than he expected.

Across town, Daniel poured himself a drink. Madeline stood near the fireplace while Mr. Venn sat in his armchair.

 "She's getting bolder," Daniel said.

"She feels protected," Madeline replied calmly.

"He lets her speak," Daniel said.

"Which means her opinion matters to him," Madeline said with a little laugh.

He didn't like that.

Mr. Venn finally spoke. "Who is this Maya girl Alexander keeps defending? Is she really that impressive?"

"She's nothing," Daniel said quickly.

Madeline glanced at him. "Is she?"

He didn't answer. Because in that boardroom, when she held his gaze without fear, he felt challenged and something else…interest.

Madeline's expression darkened slightly. "She's too outspoken. Too confident. She thinks Alexander's support will save her."

A slow, cold smile touched her lips. "Let her dig," she said softly. "Sometimes people dig their own graves."

Daniel stared into his drink.

Deep down, he knew this wasn't going to be simple. Not anymore.
