Alternate Chapter 4: The Paradox, the Prayer, and the Graduation of Ash

Chapter 4: The Paradox, the Prayer, and the Graduation of Ash

Inside the primary control vault of Dr. Ujiko's forgotten laboratory, the countdown to the apocalypse was written in blinking red digits.

00:01:30 UNTIL MASS THAW.

The heavy steel vault door, the only barrier separating Class Zero from the single Prototype Nomu hunting them, was actively failing. A massive, bone-white talon had already pierced the titanium, shrieking against the metal as the abomination tore at the logic-gates from the outside.

Kota Izumi stood at the center of the vault, his legs planted in a wide, defensive stance. He was the vanguard shield. Sweat poured down his face, his eyes wide behind his red visor. He thrust his hands forward, generating two massively compressed spheres of high-pressure water, spinning them violently to maximize their kinetic force. "Katsuma, how much longer?!"

"The Purge... the copycat killer... he initiated a hardware lock!" Katsuma Shimano screamed, his fingers flying across the archaic keyboard of the central console as sparks flew from the severed wires he had spliced into his datapad. "Ujiko's system is fighting my override! It thinks I'm a virus! The encryption is recursive!"

A digital map of the massive, subterranean hangar beyond the observation glass flashed frantically on Katsuma's screen. All hundred cylindrical vats were beginning to hiss, the internal temperature rising rapidly as the bio-luminescent preservative fluid turned black. The army was waking up.

Eri stood between her two classmates, her red eyes locked on the failing vault door. She had used Rewind to drop the floor beneath the Nomu earlier, but she knew it had hyper-regeneration. It would be through that door in seconds.

BAM!

The entire vault door groaned as the single Prototype Nomu slammed its mismatched weight against it. A massive fissure spider-webbed across the reinforced steel. The creature unhinged its jaw on the other side, letting out a deafening, multi-vocal shriek that vibrated the very air in the vault.

"It's breaking through!" Kota roared, preparing his final defense.

Katsuma slammed his fist onto the console as his screen went red. "I can't stop the countdown! The access is completely denied! He's locked out the standard shutdown command!"

The countdown hit 00:00:30.

"Stand back!" Eri ordered, stepping in front of her classmates. She reached up to her forehead, the horn beginning to hum with golden-yellow light. She couldn't kill it, but she had to try to stasis it again.

The vault door shattered.

The single Prototype Nomu burst into the room, sending jagged chunks of steel flying across the floor. Its three bulbous yellow eyes locked onto Class Zero. It unhinged its jaw, acidic saliva dripping onto the floor, and crouched, preparing to lunge and tear the children to pieces.

Before the monster could move, the grated steel floor in front of it vanished.

There was no sound, no effect. A cylindrical section of the floor, five feet deep, simply became permeated.

"POWERRRR!"

Mirio Togata erupted upward from the void beneath the Nomu. He didn't rise; he launched himself like a rocket. The Lemillion suit, modified with Swarm-tech to integrate seamlessly with his Permeation Quirk, was a blur of blue, gold, and white.

Mirio closed the distance to the Nomu in a microsecond. He didn't standard-punch. He re-solidified his fist perfectly as it entered the beast's asymmetrical torso, channeling every ounce of his massive physical strength into a concentrated singularity of kinetic impact.

BOOM!

The impact was cataclysmic. The Prototype Nomu—a creature designed to absorb blunt force—was violently launched backward by the sheer, unadulterated strength of the Golden Age hero. It crashed into the far wall of the vault, the concrete shattering around it, pinning the abomination in the rubble.

Mirio landed softly in front of Class Zero, the dust settling around him. He didn't turn around to look at them. He stood with his back to them, his massive cape billowing, creating an unbreakable wall of muscle and will between the students and the nightmare.

"Lemillion!" Midoriya's voice cracked over the comms, finally piercing the electromagnetic interference of the vault.

Mirio tapped his earpiece. "I have visual on Class Zero! They are uninjured! But Aizawa was right! This is an active Ujiko facility! There is a single mass-mutation asset in the vault, currently neutralized, and..."

Mirio looked through the massive observation glass overlooking the hangar. His blue eyes widened behind his mask.

The countdown timer on the console hit 00:00:00.

INTEGRATION CYCLE COMPLETE. COMMENCING DEPLOYMENT.

KRRR-CLANG-SREEEEEECH!

Simultaneously, the heavy, reinforced steel caps of all one hundred glass vats inside the massive hangar were ejected by hydraulic pressure.

The toxic, bio-luminescent preservative fluid rushed out of the cylinders, flooding the grated floor of the hangar below. Hundreds of twisted, bio-engineered Prototype Nomus dropped onto their feet. Their mismatched yellow eyes snapped open in the dark.

A hundred unhinged jaws unleashed a collective, deafening shriek of simulated life. They turned their heads, sensing the bio-signatures inside the observation vault above them. The army began to move toward the access ramps.

Inside the vault, the single Prototype Nomu Mirio had pinned to the wall let out a answering shriek, the hyper-regeneration instantly sealing the wound in its chest. It pushed itself out of the rubble, charging back toward Lemillion.

"Sovereign! Aizawa!" Mirio roared into the comms, his voice dropping the characteristic cheerfulness, replacing it with the hardened steel of a commander facing an apocalypse. "Target Alpha is massive! Hundreds of active Prototype assets are deploying in Sector 4! The containment on the facility is failing! We cannot hold this subterranean perimeter! Requesting immediate, total conceptual orbital wipe of these coordinates!"

"Lemillion, negative on the orbital wipe!" Rin's voice crackled back, tight with sheer panic. "Class Zero is subterranean! If we strike the surface, the collapse will crush them before you can phase them out!"

"If these things reach the surface, they will wipe out Hope's Ridge in three minutes!" Mirio argued, his blue eyes locking onto the single Nomu charging him. "I am holding the door against a single asset, but I cannot hold a hundred! You have twenty seconds before the vanguard wave reaches the vault glass! That is an absolute directive, Sovereign! Protect the settlement!"

Inside the command hub of Aegis Prime, Rei Arata heard the logic. He looked at Shota Aizawa. The underground hero was back in the Spire, having returned to coordinate the deployment. Aizawa stared at the Sovereign, his single eye wide with the devastating agony of a man being forced to authorize the execution of his own children to save a nation.

"Do it, Rei," Aizawa whispered, his voice shattering. "Lock the sky. Erase the mountain. Save the settlement. My children... they knew the syllabus."

Rei Arata gritted his teeth, the cosmic fire in his chest roaring defensively against the horrific choice. He raised his hand, channeling Rin's spatial algorithms. He was the anchor. He had to carry the board.

"Rin," Nocturne commanded, his dual-toned voice tight with agonizing despair. "Initialize Aegis Eclipse protocol. Total molecular un-making of Sector 4. T-minus ten seconds. I am... so sorry, Toshinori."

Subterranean Vault. 10 Seconds Remaining.

Class Zero stood trapped between the vault battle and the observation glass.

Mirio was locked in a brutal, close-quarters melee against the single Prototype Nomu. He didn't just fight; he was a phantom, Permeating through the Nomu's wild swings, re-solidifying to deliver devastating blows, trying to keep the creature's attention focused solely on him. But the Nomu's high-density regeneration was absorbing everything Lemillion threw at it. Every time Mirio re-solidified to protect Katsuma at the console, the creature nearly landed a lethal strike. It was an impossible strategic paradox.

Through the observation glass, the vanguard wave of the Nomu army reached the base of the tower. Hundreds of multi-jointed claws began to tear at the concrete and steel of the observation deck. The massive glass wall in front of Class Zero began to groan under the collective pressure.

Kota stood beside the console, his high-pressure water cannons ready. "It's all over, Eri. We're trapped. Aizawa said we run. Where do we run?!"

Eri did not answer. She had heard Lemillion's request for the conceptual orbital wipe. She knew that in seconds, the Sovereign was going to have to make the most horrifying choice a king could make.

Eri looked through the glass at the hundred waking nightmares climbing toward them. She looked at Tenko Shimura, weeping inside the Vestige Realm. She looked at her dormant horn.

You gave me my smile back, All Might, Eri thought, the golden light in her red eyes beginning to hum with an intense, absolute clarity. Midoriya said I am not a weapon. He said I can be a hero who saves people.

He didn't say I had to save the body.

Eri understood the syllabus. Aizawa-sensei had told her to map the frontier because the Swarm protects everyone, regardless of their past. If she let those Nomus reach the surface, she was letting the past destroy the future.

"I won't let them burn, Mr. Aizawa," Eri whispered to the static in her earpiece.

Eri turned away from the battle and ran toward the massive glass wall overlooking the army.

"Eri, no!" Katsuma screamed, realizing what she was doing. "You can't rewind biological matter! Ujiko's engineering will create a recursion loop! You'll vaporize yourself!"

Eri didn't stop. She ran directly up to the reinforced glass, placing both of her bare palms flat against the cold surface, looking down at the hundreds of waking yellow eyes of the Nomu army.

"I am the Squad Leader of Class Zero," Eri declared, her voice quiet, steady, and utterly devoid of fear, echoing with the serene, profound authority of the starlit dawn. "And my syllabus ends here."

Rewind: Total Conceptual Termination.

Eri didn't close her eyes. The horn on her forehead did not just glow; it ignited into a blinding, incandescent yellow supernova that instantly flooded the dark laboratory with the pure light of the Golden Age.

She did not unleash a massive, uncontrolled wave of temporal energy that would have crushed her own class. With the absolute, terrifying, surgical precision drilled into her by the Sovereign, she projected her Rewind directly through the glass, using the dimension-wide global Astral Nexus grid Katsuma had just spliced into the facility's antenna as a conduit.

She didn't rewind the individual monsters. She targeted the conceptual anchor.

She didn't rewind them seconds, or minutes. She rewound the conceptual process of bio-engineering itself.

She targeted the point of integration where Dr. Ujiko had violently grafted stolen Quirk factors onto broken human DNA. She conceptually un-linked the parasitic Quirks from their hosts.

The complex, multi-layered bio-code Ujiko had spent decades perfecting was instantly, violently un-made. Hundreds of distinct Rewind tethers erupted from Eri's consciousness simultaneously, physically connecting to every single Nomu in the hangar.

The cognitive load was catastrophic. It was like trying to mathematically resolve a hundred dimensional equations in her own brain simultaneously. Her consciousness began to fracture under the sheer conceptual weight of the paradox she was imposing on reality. Blood poured from her nose, her ears, and the base of her horn. The skin of her arms began to split, the golden time-stream light bleeding out of her veins.

"Arghhhhh!" Eri screamed, the noise purely primal, agonizing, and yet utterly unbroken.

Outside the glass, inside the hangar, the effect was instantaneous and absolute.

Hundreds of Prototype Nomus, already scaling the walls, violently convulsed in mid-air. The bio-engineered preservatives that integrated their bodies instantly dissolved. The black fluid inside their muscles turned to gray steam. The Quirk factors that gave them life—regeneration, density, strength—were conceptualized into non-existence.

Their horrific, symmetrical forms collapsed. They didn't fall as monsters; they didn't even fall as corpses. As the conceptual Rewind violently un-linked the Ujiko code, the Nomu bodies themselves conceptually un-raveled.

They turned to dust.

A massive, cascading tidal wave of harmless gray organic ash—hundreds of tons of it—erupted from the center of the hangar as an entire army of nightmares was simultaneously turned into genetic powder. The ash waterfall cascaded over the grated floor, burying the laboratory in the remnants of a forgotten nightmare.

The army of the underworld was gone.

Inside the vault, the single Prototype Nomu fighting Lemillion was not connected to the mass-thaw network Katsuma had used as a conduit. But as Eri ignited her supernova, the sheer, overflowing temporal energy in the vault was immense.

Mirio Togata saw the golden light. He saw the Nomu's hyper-regeneration faltering under the ambient Rewind field Eri was generating.

Mirio Permeated through the floor, re-solidifying behind the Nomu. He locked his massive arms around the creature's asymmetrical throat.

"UNITED STATES OF POWERRRR!" Mirio roared, his voice booming with the combined resonance of Nana Shimura, Toshinori Yagi, and the Sovereign.

Mirio re-solidified his massive kinetic output inside the single Nomu's neck. The Prototype Nomu didn't have a head to punch; it was just brain and muscle. Mirio did not try to kinetic-crush it; he conceptually Permeated his own will into the Ujiko code.

He did not kinetic-smash. He mass-disconnected the singular asset from reality.

KRA-KOOM!

The single Prototype Nomu didn't explode. Its body simply collapsed into a mass of inanimate, gray flesh, the multi-layered Quirks completely un-linked and un-made by Mirio's absolute will.

The single monster was dead.

High in the Spire, Rei Arata felt the catastrophic conceptual ripple through the Omni-Weave. He looked at the countdown on Rin's console. Aegis Eclipse T-minus five seconds.

But the spatial readings had fundamentally changed. The mass-mutation signatures in Sector 4 had evaporated.

Nocturne slammed his hands onto the table. "Rin! Abort Eclipse! Hold fire! I repeat, HOLD FIRE!"

Rin's fingers flew across the keyboard. "Eclipse protocol aborted! Conceptual strike offline! Sovereign, the mass-mutation signatures... they are gone! They are completely un-made!"

Shota Aizawa stared at the monitors, gasping for air, the tears of despair in his eye instantly turning to tears of disbelief.

"They did it..." Aizawa whispered, collapsing against the war table, his shoulders shaking with relief. "My children... they saved the board."

The Subterranean Vault.

The blinding golden light in the vault faded, replaced by the flickering red emergency lights and the settling gray dust.

Eri's hands slid down from the observation glass. She collapsed backward onto the grated floor, the blood pouring from her horn and face. The Rewind supernova had violently burned through her stamina. Her consciousness was fading into a deep, peaceful darkness.

Katsuma Shimano ran over, his datapad scanning her vitals. "She's stable, Mr. Aizawa! Vanguard Command! Class Zero Squad Leader Eri is stable! Her cognitive function is recovering, but she has mass-mutated biological trauma from the overexertion! We need evac!"

Kota Izumi ran to the vault door. The single Nomu was a heap of gray flesh. Lemillion stood over it, panting heavily, his Swarm suit battered, his blue eyes staring in absolute awe at the small, unconscious girl on the floor.

He had expected to have to phase three people through three hundred feet of solid rock. He hadn't expected the successor to use the syllabus to un-make the apocalypse.

"Mr. Aizawa," Kota stated into his comms, his voice deep, controlled, and utterly transformed by the horror he had just witnessed and the victory they had just secured. "Sector 4 primary objective is complete. Cartography exam finalized. The frontier is clean."

Kota looked down the subterranean corridor. A faint, distant sound of BOOM-BOOM-BOOM was echoing through the steel walls. The Vanguard Echoes were here.

High above the sinkhole, Lady Nagant and Stain watched through the rain as Shota Aizawa used his capture scarf to anchor a secondary spatial pinhole, dropping hundreds of Swarm medical drones into the sinkhole.

"The Purge thought he found the echoes of the abyss," Stain rasped, a low, viscerally satisfied growl escaping his throat as he looked down at the subterranean access tunnel.

Lady Nagant cycled a new round into her mutated rifle, a rare, genuine smile gracing her lips as she looked out over the safe, quiet valley of Hope's Ridge.

"He was wrong, old man," Nagant smiled, looking at the first light of the morning sun breaking through the Oku-Hida peaks. "He didn't find the abyss. He found Class Zero. And the abyss just learned to run."
