Chapter 8 - Shadows of the Past

The settlement celebrated the Wolves' retreat. Derek gave a speech about strength in numbers and the importance of unity. Maya smiled for the first time since Alex had met her. Even the children seemed less afraid.

Alex stayed on the edges of the celebration, nursing a cup of something that was technically alcoholic and watching.

He'd caused this. His midnight raid had broken the Wolves' hold on the area and given Sanctuary breathing room. But no one knew that. To them, the Wolves' collapse was a mystery—a stroke of incredible luck.

It felt wrong to take credit for something he couldn't explain.

"You're not celebrating."

Maya appeared beside him, her cup empty.

"Someone has to keep watch."

"The guards are on rotation. You're off duty." She studied his profile. "You don't like attention, do you?"

"I'm not used to it."

"Being ignored?"

"Being relevant." Alex took a sip of his drink. It burned going down. "Before all this, I was nobody. A warehouse worker. No family, no friends worth mentioning, no achievements. I died without anyone noticing."

"And now?"

"Now I can do things. Important things. But I still feel like that nobody inside. Like any moment, someone's going to realize I don't belong and take it all away."

Maya was quiet for a moment. Then she said, "You know what I was before? A second-year medical student. Six figures in debt, no sleep, no life, just studying and working and wondering if it was all worth it. I wasn't anybody either."

"Sounds like we have something in common."

"Maybe." She turned to face him. "But Alex, what matters isn't who you were. It's who you choose to be now. You saved my life. You've helped this settlement. Whether you think you're a nobody or not, you're making a difference."

It was the most honest conversation they'd had. Alex felt something shift—a connection forming that went beyond mutual utility.

"Thank you," he said.

"Don't thank me yet. I still think you're hiding something big. And eventually, you're going to have to trust someone with the truth."

She walked away before he could respond.

Alex watched her go, thinking about secrets and trust and the difference between them.

That night, he received another System notification.

[NEW QUEST CHAIN UNLOCKED]

[QUEST: THE GLITCH ORIGIN]

[YOUR EXISTENCE IS ANOMALOUS. DISCOVER WHY YOUR SYSTEM IS BROKEN AND WHO—OR WHAT—IS RESPONSIBLE.]

[STAGE 1: INVESTIGATE THE WATCHER]

[THE ENTITY KNOWN AS "THE WATCHER" HAS BEEN OBSERVING YOU. FIND OUT WHY.]

[REWARD: CLASS EVOLUTION CLUE]

Alex stared at the notification. Since his Awakening, he'd been focused on survival—on understanding the rules of this new world and his place in it. But the deeper mystery had always been his glitch.

Why him? Why midnight? Why did his System keep flagging him as an error?

[ACCEPT?]

He accepted.

[QUEST ACCEPTED]

[FIRST CLUE: THE WATCHER LEFT A MESSAGE IN YOUR SYSTEM LOGS. ACCESS IT TO BEGIN.]

Alex navigated to his System logs—something he'd never thought to check before. Among the standard entries (level ups, quest completions, damage notifications), he found something different.

A message, timestamped from his Awakening moment.

[HELLO, LITTLE GLITCH.]

[I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR YOU.]

[WE HAVE MUCH TO DISCUSS.]

[FIND ME AT THE HEART OF THE FIRST DUNGEON.]

[TIME IS MEANINGLESS. BUT TRUTH IS EVERYTHING.]

The First Dungeon. Alex had heard of it—the first dungeon to appear after the Awakening, located in the city center. It was rumored to be nearly impossible, with a recommended level of 50+.

He was Level 3.

[TIME REMAINING: 58:22]

He had an hour of godlike power. And a mystery that might explain his entire existence.

Alex made a decision.

He was going to find the Heart of the First Dungeon.
