Chapter 7 - The Midnight Raid

The Wolves' territory was a fortified block in the downtown district—three buildings connected by makeshift bridges, surrounded by a wall of wrecked cars and rubble.

Alex had scouted it during the day, posing as a wandering survivor looking to trade. The guards at the entrance had turned him away, but not before he'd gotten a good look at their defenses.

Thirty-plus fighters. Fortified positions. Escape routes covered.

It would have been suicide for a normal Level 2.

But Alex wasn't normal.

At midnight, he felt the familiar surge of power—strength flooding his limbs, senses sharpening, the world slowing down around him.

[MIDNIGHT PROTOCOL ACTIVE]

[TIME REMAINING: 59:59]

He didn't waste a second.

Shadow Step carried him inside the perimeter in a series of blinks, each teleportation bringing him closer to the central building. He moved through shadows like they were doorways, bypassing guards who never saw him coming.

[ALERT: STEALTH APPROACH RECOMMENDED]

[AVOID DIRECT CONFRONTATION UNTIL TARGET IDENTIFIED]

The System was guiding him again. Alex followed its direction, creeping through hallways and up staircases, avoiding the main gathering areas where the Wolves held court.

He found the leadership on the top floor.

Three men—the same three who'd threatened Maya—sat around a table covered in maps and weapons. They were laughing, drinking something from salvaged bottles, completely unaware of the predator in their midst.

[TARGET IDENTIFIED: WOLVES LEADERSHIP]

[THREAT LEVEL: MODERATE]

[RECOMMENDED ACTION: ELIMINATE]

Alex stepped out of the shadows.

"Remember me?"

The three men froze. Then scrambled for weapons.

It didn't help.

The fight was brief. Void Strike didn't leave survivors. Within seconds, the Wolves' leadership lay dead on the floor, their bodies dissolving into particles of light.

[QUEST COMPLETE: ESTABLISH DOMINANCE]

[REWARD: 500 XP, UNIQUE ITEM]

[ITEM RECEIVED: WOLF LORD'S SIGNET - A RING THAT GRANTS AUTHORITY OVER WOLVES FACTION REMNANTS]

[LEVEL UP!]

[YOU ARE NOW LEVEL 3]

Alex stared at the ring in his hand. It was simple—a band of gray metal with a wolf's head emblem—but he could feel the power radiating from it. Authority over the Wolves' remnants. The faction would follow him now, or at least recognize him as the dominant force.

[TIME REMAINING: 42:15]

Forty-two minutes. He could use this time to secure the Wolves' resources, but he had a more important concern.

He'd just killed three people. Murdered them, really. They were bad men—predators who'd threatened Maya and probably worse—but he'd executed them without trial, without hesitation.

Was this who he was becoming?

The question lingered as he made his way back to the settlement. He arrived before his power faded, slipping into his guard position as if nothing had happened.

Maya found him at dawn.

"The Wolves are in chaos," she said. "Their leadership is dead. No one knows who did it, but they're pulling back from our territory."

"Good."

"You don't seem surprised."

"I'm not." Alex met her eyes. "Some people deserved what happened to them."

Maya studied him for a long moment. Whatever she saw in his expression made her nod slowly.

"Come on. Derek will want to hear about this."

As they walked toward the settlement's main building, Alex felt the weight of the Signet on his finger. Power came with choices, and choices had consequences. He'd chosen violence tonight, and the Wolves' territory was his to command if he wanted it.

But power wasn't what he was after.

He wanted to matter. To protect. To be more than the nobody who'd died in a warehouse collapse.

The ring was just another tool toward that end.

A means to an end, not the end itself.
