Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: Leaving the Pack

The decision settled in Lyra's chest like a quiet storm.

Heavy. Final.

There would be no going back from this.

Morning light filtered through the thin curtains of her room, soft and golden—too gentle for a day that felt like the end of everything she had ever known.

Lyra folded the last of her clothes and placed them into a small worn bag.

It wasn't much.

A few dresses. A cloak. Some coins her mother had pressed into her hand despite her protests.

A life reduced to something she could carry.

Her fingers lingered on the edge of the bag before she slowly closed it.

This was really happening.

"I can still tell the Alpha," her mother's voice came from behind her, quiet but firm. "What happened last night… the rogues… you shouldn't have to leave because of this."

Lyra shook her head without turning.

"No."

"But Lyra—"

"It won't change anything," she said softly.

Because it wouldn't.

Nothing would.

Not after the rejection.

Not after the way the entire pack had looked at her—like she was nothing.

Like she was less than nothing.

Her mother stepped closer. "You're hurt," she insisted. "You need time to heal."

Lyra let out a small, humorless breath.

"Healing here isn't possible anymore."

The words felt like truth carved into stone.

Because every corner of this place held a memory.

Every path reminded her of what she had lost.

Of what she had never truly had.

And worst of all—

Him.

The bond pulsed faintly at the thought, like it was aware.

Like it refused to let her forget.

Lyra's jaw tightened.

"I need to go," she said, finally turning to face her mother.

Pain flashed across the older woman's face, but she didn't argue again.

Instead, she reached out and pulled Lyra into a tight embrace.

For a moment, Lyra froze.

Then slowly… she relaxed into it.

Her eyes closed as she breathed in the familiar scent of home.

This.

This was what she would miss.

Not the pack.

Not the whispers.

But this.

"I'm proud of you," her mother murmured against her hair.

Lyra swallowed hard.

"Even after… everything?"

"Especially after everything."

That nearly broke her.

But she held it together.

Somehow.

Pulling back, her mother cupped her face gently.

"Where will you go?"

Lyra hesitated.

"I'll head toward Silver Moon City," she said. "It's neutral territory. No pack rules."

Her mother nodded slowly. "It's dangerous."

"So is staying."

A sad smile touched her mother's lips.

"I suppose it is."

Silence settled between them.

Then, softly—

"Be careful, Lyra."

"I will."

It wasn't a promise she was sure she could keep.

But it was all she had to give.

Taking her bag, Lyra moved toward the door.

Each step felt heavier than the last.

Like the house itself was trying to hold her back.

At the threshold, she paused.

Just for a second.

Then she stepped outside.

And didn't look back.

The pack grounds felt different now.

Colder.

Distant.

As Lyra walked through the familiar paths, she could feel the stares.

Hear the whispers.

"They're saying she got rejected…"

"By the Alpha himself…"

"How embarrassing…"

She kept her head high.

Kept walking.

Even when it felt like every word was a blade against her skin.

Even when her chest tightened with every step.

Even when the bond pulsed faintly, as if reminding her of exactly who had caused all of this.

She didn't stop.

Wouldn't stop.

Not until she was free.

The gates loomed ahead.

Large.

Imposing.

Final.

Two guards stood at either side, their expressions shifting when they saw her approach.

Pity.

That was worse than mockery.

Lyra hated pity.

"Leaving?" one of them asked, his tone careful.

Lyra nodded.

"Yeah."

They exchanged a glance but didn't question her.

Didn't try to stop her.

Why would they?

She wasn't important enough for that.

The gates creaked open slowly.

The sound echoed louder than it should have.

Like the closing of a chapter.

Lyra stepped forward.

One step closer to freedom.

One step further from everything she had ever known.

And yet—

Her heart didn't feel lighter.

It felt heavier.

Because even as she crossed the boundary…

She still felt him.

The bond flared suddenly.

Sharp.

Intense.

Lyra stumbled slightly, her hand flying to her chest.

"What…?"

It was stronger than before.

Much stronger.

Not fading.

Not weakening.

Growing.

Her breath came faster as confusion twisted inside her.

This wasn't right.

None of this was right.

Why now?

Why was it getting stronger when she was leaving?

When she was finally putting distance between them?

The answer came before she could stop it.

Because he's closer.

Lyra froze.

Her pulse spiked.

Slowly…

She turned.

And there he was.

Standing just beyond the trees.

Watching her.

Alpha Kael Draven.

Her heart stuttered.

The bond surged violently, reacting to his presence like it had been waiting for this moment.

For him.

He didn't move.

Didn't speak.

Just stood there, his dark figure partially hidden by shadows, his gaze locked entirely on her.

Intense.

Unreadable.

Dangerous.

Lyra's throat tightened.

Why is he here?

Didn't he say—

Stay away from me.

A bitter feeling rose in her chest.

Then why are you here?

For a moment, neither of them moved.

The world seemed to hold its breath.

Waiting.

Then Kael took a step forward.

The bond pulsed again.

Stronger.

Hotter.

Lyra's breath hitched.

Another step.

Closer.

Her instincts screamed at her to run.

To leave.

To not get pulled back into something that had already broken her.

But her feet wouldn't move.

She hated that.

Hated how her body reacted to him.

Hated how the bond still had power over her.

Kael stopped a few feet away.

Close enough.

Too close.

"You're leaving," he said.

His voice was calm.

Controlled.

Like last night had never happened.

Lyra's fingers curled around the strap of her bag.

"Yes."

A pause.

Something flickered in his eyes.

Gone too quickly to read.

"Good."

The word felt like a slap.

Lyra's jaw tightened.

"Glad we agree on something," she shot back quietly.

Silence stretched between them.

Tense.

Heavy.

Then Kael spoke again.

"You'll be safer away from here."

Lyra let out a short, bitter laugh.

"Safer?" she repeated. "I was attacked last night. In your territory."

His expression darkened.

"That won't happen again."

"Oh, of course," she said, her voice edged with sarcasm. "Because I won't be your problem anymore, right?"

The words hung in the air.

Sharp.

Accusing.

Kael's jaw clenched.

For a moment, it looked like he was going to say something.

Something real.

Something honest.

But then—

The wall came back.

Cold. Unyielding.

"Exactly," he said.

The bond twisted painfully.

Lyra swallowed hard, forcing the reaction down.

"Then we're done here."

She turned.

Took a step forward.

Another.

"Lyra."

His voice stopped her.

She closed her eyes briefly.

Don't turn back.

Don't—

But she did.

Slowly.

Because some part of her still needed answers.

Still needed something from him.

"Don't come back," Kael said.

The finality in his tone was absolute.

Like a command.

Like a warning.

Like a plea he refused to admit.

Lyra studied him for a long moment.

Then—

A small, sad smile touched her lips.

"You don't have to worry about that, Alpha," she said softly.

"I won't make that mistake again."

The words hit harder than she intended.

She saw it.

The flicker in his eyes.

The crack.

But it wasn't enough.

It would never be enough.

Turning away, Lyra walked forward.

This time, she didn't stop.

Didn't hesitate.

Didn't look back.

And as she crossed fully into the unknown…

The bond remained.

Unbroken.

And burning stronger than ever.
