Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: You Can’t Stay Away

The silence between them stretched too long.

Too tight.

Like something was about to snap.

Lyra held his gaze, refusing to look away this time. Her heart was still racing from the attack, from the chase, from him.

Always him.

"You should go," she said finally, her voice quieter now—but steady.

Kael didn't move.

Didn't blink.

Didn't even breathe differently.

"I just saved your life," he said.

"And I said thank you."

"That's it?" His tone sharpened. "You run off into unknown territory, get hunted, nearly dragged away—and your solution is to send me away?"

Lyra's jaw tightened.

"You already sent me away," she shot back. "Remember?"

That hit.

She saw it.

That flicker again.

But just like before—

He buried it.

"I told you to leave for your safety."

"And yet here you are," she said, stepping closer despite herself. "Following me. Protecting me. Acting like I matter—when you made it very clear that I don't."

The bond pulsed hard between them.

Reacting.

Demanding.

Her chest rose and fell unevenly.

"Make it make sense, Kael."

His name slipped out before she could stop it.

Too familiar.

Too dangerous.

His eyes darkened instantly.

"You shouldn't say my name like that."

"Like what?" she challenged.

"Like it means something."

The words were cold.

But the bond betrayed him.

Lyra felt it.

Felt the contradiction.

The truth he kept trying to bury.

A bitter smile touched her lips.

"That's the problem, isn't it?" she said softly. "It does mean something. You just don't want it to."

Kael took a step closer.

The air shifted.

Thickened.

"You don't understand what you're talking about."

"Then explain it!" she snapped, her control slipping. "Because I'm tired, Kael. I'm tired of feeling like I'm going crazy. This bond—whatever it is—it's getting stronger, not weaker. And now people are coming after me like I'm some kind of—"

"Because you are."

The words cut through her.

Lyra froze.

"What?"

Kael went still, like he hadn't meant to say it out loud.

Too late.

Her heart pounded.

"Finish that sentence."

Silence.

"Kael."

His jaw clenched.

"You're not just any wolf," he said finally.

"I figured that much," she replied sharply. "Try again."

His gaze locked onto hers.

Intense.

Conflicted.

Dangerous.

"You're connected to something bigger than you understand."

Frustration flared instantly.

"That's not an answer."

"It's the only one you're getting."

Lyra laughed bitterly.

"Of course it is."

She turned away, running a hand through her hair as she tried to steady herself.

"I almost got taken tonight," she said, her voice quieter now. "And you're still keeping secrets."

Kael's expression darkened.

"I'm keeping you alive."

"At what cost?" she demanded, turning back to face him. "Because from where I'm standing, it feels like I'm just a pawn in something I don't even understand."

"You're not a pawn."

"Then what am I?"

The question hung between them.

Heavy.

Loaded.

Kael didn't answer.

Because he couldn't.

Because the truth was worse than anything she could imagine.

Lyra shook her head slowly.

"Right," she murmured. "Figures."

She bent down, grabbing her bag from where it had fallen during the struggle.

"I'm leaving."

"You're not going anywhere."

The command in his voice was immediate.

Absolute.

Lyra stilled.

Then slowly—

She turned.

Her eyes burned now.

Not with tears.

With anger.

"You don't get to tell me what to do," she said, each word sharp. "You gave up that right the moment you rejected me."

The bond flared violently at the word.

Rejected.

Kael's control slipped—just for a second.

But she saw it.

Felt it.

"You think I wanted that?" he snapped.

The rawness in his voice stunned her.

For a moment—

Everything froze.

Because that was the first real thing he had said.

The first crack.

Lyra's breath caught.

"Then why did you do it?" she asked softly.

There it was.

The question.

The one that mattered most.

Kael's chest rose and fell slowly.

His hands curled into fists at his sides.

He could tell her.

He could end this confusion.

Explain everything.

The curse.

The prophecy.

The choice he was being forced to make.

But if he did—

She would never forgive him.

And worse—

She might not run.

She might stay.

And that would seal her fate.

His silence answered for him.

Lyra's expression fell.

Not dramatically.

Not loudly.

Just… quietly.

Like something inside her had finally given up.

"Yeah," she whispered. "That's what I thought."

She adjusted her bag on her shoulder.

"I won't ask again."

"Lyra—"

"No." She shook her head. "I'm done asking you for answers you clearly don't want to give."

She stepped back.

Putting distance between them.

Even though the bond resisted it.

Even though it hurt.

"I don't care what this connection is," she continued, her voice steadier now. "I don't care what you're hiding. I'll figure it out on my own."

Kael's gaze sharpened.

"You won't survive long enough to do that."

The words came out harsher than he intended.

Lyra's lips curved slightly.

Not a smile.

Something sadder.

"Then I guess we'll both get what we want."

His chest tightened.

"What does that mean?"

"It means," she said, meeting his eyes one last time, "you won't have to worry about me anymore."

The bond twisted painfully.

Like it was rejecting the very idea.

Kael stepped forward instinctively.

"Don't say that."

"Why?" she challenged. "Isn't that what you wanted?"

"No."

The word came out immediately.

Unfiltered.

Honest.

They both froze.

Because that—

That was the truth.

Lyra searched his face.

For once, he didn't hide it fast enough.

She saw it.

Felt it.

And it changed something.

Not everything.

But something.

Her voice softened slightly.

"Then stop pushing me away."

The simplicity of it hit harder than anything else.

Kael's jaw tightened.

If only it were that simple.

If only wanting her didn't mean risking her life.

"I can't," he said quietly.

Lyra nodded slowly.

Like she had expected that.

Like it still hurt anyway.

"Then you don't get to follow me either."

The words were firm.

Final.

Kael's eyes darkened.

"That's not how this works."

"It is now."

She turned.

Again.

And this time—

She started walking.

Away from him.

From the tension.

From the bond that refused to let either of them breathe.

"Lyra."

Her name was a warning.

A pull.

A command.

She didn't stop.

Didn't turn.

Didn't slow down.

And that—

That was new.

The bond surged wildly inside Kael.

Demanding action.

Demanding he go after her.

But he stood there.

Frozen.

Watching her walk away again.

Except this time—

It felt different.

Because this time…

She meant it.

And for the first time since this all began—

Kael realized something dangerous.

If he let her keep walking…

He might actually lose her.
