Chapter 3 - The Broken Engagement

Arriving at the room after thinking about everything felt like a blur, at one moment he was in the training ground with his mother and suddenly, he was in his room in the bathtub getting ready for today's meeting with the emperor.

I haven't seen Karina in 2 years. I wonder how beautiful she has gotten.

I've missed my best friend.

While growing up, the princess and Calux were brought together every once in a while so they could get to know each other and form a bond.

This would make it easier for their marriage since it was arranged since their births.

Over time, Calux found himself entranced with Karina, she was a beauty since she was little, it was said that it was a match made in heaven since Calux himself was always handsome as well.

In the whole of Pollux, there was probably no one more handsome than him, his eyes and hair alone made him standout in the crowd.

Not counting the fact that he has been training for years in order to be ready for his awakening, therefore his physique is on the higher end of the spectrum for any man in the Brax Continent.

His only flaw is the fact that he hasn't awakened.

Karina always told me no matter what happened in the future, we would always be together.

Sigh...

I hope that's the case, I've got a bad feeling about this sudden meeting.

...

A few hours later, Calux was standing well dressed in front of a mirror.

His hair was tied back while a few strands were left loose around his face that made him look like a super model.

His gaze intense while he looked at himself, hoping to make a great impression on his fiancé, since they should be getting married in a year based on the original arrangements.

Suddenly, a knock was made on the door.

"My lord, the princess and the emperor are a few minutes away in their carriage, the madam told me to ask you to come down and greet them at the door."

Said a maidservant from across the door.

"Got it. Be out in a second."

He looked at himself once more in the mirror, and walked out of the door towards the stairs.

Arriving at the main entrance, his mother was already waiting.

She had a beautiful red dress that accentuated her curves.

Her beautiful waist length black hair was let loose, while her blue eyes shined like the sky.

She looked at him and smiled.

"Look at you son... You look just like your father."

While saying this, you could hear the longing in her voice and her eyes turned moist.

Before they could continue, the imperial carriage arrived in front of them.

The first to disembark was the emperor, a man in his late forties, brown hair and golden colored eyes, he looked ordinary to the naked eye, but he was anything but.

Christian Brax.

Standing on top of the ranking as an S rank Awakener, the Brax household carried the Water Leviathan Bloodline, an S rank bloodline that carried with it exemplary innate skills.

Next came the empress, a beautiful woman with black hair and brown eyes that looked to be in her late thirties.

Madeline Brax.

Finally, a beautiful seventeen year old girl came out of the carriage.

She had brown hair and golden eyes just like her father.

Her skin silky smooth white and flawless with no blemishes to be found.

She had an aloof character, and an air of superiority as if the rest of the world had to bow towards her if she deemed it so.

It was understandable, she had awakened at the age of 14 as an S rank with her household bloodline and an A rank Talent for Conquering.

This talent alone made her the correct choice for next empress.

This was of course Karina Brax.

Calux however, felt she had changed.

She was originally an easy going girl, that didn't believe herself to be above others.

This however, was not what he was seeing.

"Greetings your majesties.", greeted both Calux and Celine.

"Hello Celine, nice seeing you again.", he said with a smile towards Celine.

Then looking at Calux, and looking at the lack of mana in his body, he sigh but greeted anyways.

"Hello little Calux, you look well."

Calux didn't smile, he could feel the tension in the air.

"Thank you, your majesty. I am well, I hope that you and the royal family are in good health as well."

Another voice cut in, it was the empress.

"My... What a well behaved boy you have here Celine. Such a fine gentleman."

Celine knew these pleasantries were all empty words, they came here to confirm if Calux had awakened or not, now that they confirmed it she knew what was coming.

"Come, let us go to the dinning hall and have a nice meal while we talk."

The emperor however cut in.

"I'm afraid it is not necessary Celine."

He paused.

"In all honesty, we came here to confirm if Calux had awakened."

"Considering that he has not, we have unfortunately no other choice but to accept a proposal made by Duke Arnold, since his son awakened with an S rank potential just like my daughter."

"Before you say anything, you need to understand Celine, to make the empire prosper, my bloodline needs to keep producing S rank heirs, if not, eventually my family will fall and other Dukedoms will rebel against us."

No one spoke for a few seconds.

Calux, just looked at Karina.

He wanted to see if there was any sort of frustration in her face, any anxiety or remorse but there wasn't any.

"Hmm.. It makes sense, but I wonder..."

"Where would house Brax be right now without my husband and I?"

"He not only saved you personally, but saved your kingdom from an unbeatable SS rank rift."

The emperor was about to interject, but Celine continued.

"I should have known that your greed would cloud how the imperial family looked at things, clearly forgetting life and death debts owed."

The atmosphere turned frighteningly cold, it was even hard to breathe for the emperor himself.

Suddenly, a gentler voice cut through the conversation.

"Miss Celine, you can't expect me to marry someone who will never be able to catch up to me can you? Our country needs strong awakeners, if we can't produce them we will eventually go extinct."

"Our higher bloodlines cannot be tainted or mixed with low level awakeners, I'm sorry."

Without sparing Calux another glance, she walked towards the carriage alone, and closed the door.

Calux looked at Karina's leaving figure in disbelief.

As expected, she is no longer the same.

Celine looked at the emperor coldly.

"You will regret this humiliation, Christian."

The empress was infuriated by how dismissive Celine was with her husband the emperor, but he stopped her with a glare.

He sighed and turned around to see that Calux had already turned around without sparing them a glance or word.

He could only sigh, and hope that he had made the correct decision.
