Chapter 1 - The Group Project

Janaya Blake had always believed that group projects were one of the most dangerous academic traps ever created.

Not because the work itself was difficult.

But because in every group, there were always two types of people: the ones who actually worked and the ones who simply existed.

Unfortunately, Janays often found herself carrying the weight of both.

The lecture hall buzzed with noise that morning. Students filled the seats, talking loudly, laughing, and scrolling through their phones while waiting for the lecturer to arrive.

Janaya sat near the middle of the classroom with her laptop open, quickly reviewing notes from the previous lecture.

Around her, the room felt chaotic.

Someone behind her was arguing about football. Two girls in front were discussing a party from the previous night. A group of boys at the back were loudly debating which lecturer gave the worst exams.

Janaya ignored them all.

She preferred quiet.

Unfortunately, quiet never lasted long in this class.

"Morning, Blake."

The voice came from the empty seat beside her.

Janaya didn't need to look up to know who it was.

Jason Carter dropped into the chair beside her with the relaxed confidence of someone who didn't believe stress existed.

Jason was one of those people who seemed permanently cheerful. He was tall, broad-shouldered, and always carried an easy smile that made people warm up to him instantly.

Janaya, however, remained unimpressed.

"Morning," she replied briefly, still typing.

Jason leaned back in his chair and stretched his arms lazily.

"You know," he said, glancing at her laptop screen, "most people use mornings to wake up slowly, drink coffee, maybe breathe a little."

"I'm aware," Janaya replied calmly.

"And yet here you are working like the semester ends tomorrow."

"Because if I don't, the semester might actually end badly."

Jason chuckled.

Before he could reply, the door of the lecture hall opened.

Immediately the noise in the room dropped.

Professor Joshua walked in.

He was known across the department for two things: his strict deadlines and his complete lack of tolerance for excuses.

Students quickly straightened in their seats.

The professor placed his books on the desk and looked around the room.

"I hope everyone enjoyed their break," he said calmly.

No one responded.

"Good," he continued. "Because today we begin your semester project."

A collective groan spread across the classroom.

Janaya closed her eyes briefly.

She had been expecting this.

Professor Joshua ignored the reactions.

"This project will count for forty percent of your final grade."

The room immediately became silent.

Now everyone was paying attention.

"You will be working in groups," the professor continued. "Each group will research and present a topic related to our course. You have one month to complete the project."

He paused before adding the most dangerous part.

"I will assign the groups."

A few students exchanged worried glances.

Janaya already knew how this would go,

Random groups, Random effort levels, Random chaos.

The professor began reading names.

"Group One…" Names were called. Students slowly gathered into small clusters around the room.

"Group Five," the professor said finally.

Janaya looked up as he began reading.

"Jason Carter."

Jason straightened slightly beside her.

"Maya Thompson."

A girl near the front raised her hand.

"Daniel Brooks."

A tall boy at the back nodded.

"Janaya Blake."

Jason turned to her with a grin.

"Well, this just got interesting."

The professor finished reading the remaining names.

"Jason Carter," he said, looking directly at him, "you will serve as the project leader for your group."

Jason blinked.

"Me?"

"Yes," the professor replied simply.

Jason slowly nodded.

"Yes, sir."

The professor wrote the project topics on the board.

"Each group will research this subject thoroughly. Your final report must include analysis, references, and a presentation."

He turned back to the class.

"You have one month."

His voice hardened slightly.

"No extensions."

The first group meeting happened that same afternoon in the library. Jason sat at the center of the table with the rest of the group gathered around him. There were seven of them in total.

Jason clapped his hands once.

"Alright everyone," he said. "First meeting as a team."

Daniel leaned back in his chair.

"I already hate meetings."

Maya laughed.

"Relax, it's just a project."

Jason pulled out a notebook.

"Okay, let's divide the work."

For the first ten minutes, things actually went well, Ideas were suggested, Tasks were assigned, Research topics were divided.

Then things slowly started to fall apart.

Daniel began scrolling through his phone.

Two other members started discussing a movie.

Maya wandered off to get snacks.

Jason attempted to regain control.

"Guys… guys…"

No one listened.

Janaya watched the chaos silently.

Exactly as she predicted.

After another ten minutes of pointless discussion, she finally spoke.

"If we keep wasting time like this, we won't finish."

The table went quiet.

Jason rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly.

"Okay, fair point."

The next few meetings were… slightly better.

But not by much.

Sometimes half the group arrived late.

Sometimes people forgot their assigned tasks.

Sometimes the meeting turned into casual gossip and football team debates.

Meanwhile, the deadline slowly approached.

Three weeks passed.

Then four.

The final week arrived.

And suddenly everyone panicked.

The night before submission, the group gathered in the library again.

Jason looked exhausted.

Daniel looked stressed.

Maya looked guilty.

Janaya looked… calm.

Because she had already done most of the work.

Jason stared at the laptop screen in disbelief.

"You finished all this?"

"Most of it," Janaya replied.

Daniel leaned forward.

"This is like… seventy percent of the project."

Janaya shrugged.

"Someone had to do it."

Jason ran a hand through his hair.

"I owe you my life."

"Just finish your sections," she replied.

For the next several hours, the group worked harder than they had all month.

Typing, Editing, Formatting, Arguing over references.

By the time they finished compiling everything, the deadline was dangerously close.

Jason checked the time.

"Submission closes in an hour."

The entire group rushed across campus to the department office.

Jason submitted the project just minutes before the deadline.

When they finally stepped outside, everyone looked exhausted.

Daniel dropped onto a bench dramatically.

"I think I lost five years of my life."

Maya laughed.

"At least we finished."

Jason turned to Janaya.

"Seriously though… you saved this project."

Janaya simply smiled faintly.

"We'll see when the results come out."

Three week later, the class gathered again in the lecture hall.

Professor Joshua stood at the front holding a stack of papers, looking very pleased.

"I have finished grading your projects, and I must say you all did better than the previous sets."

Students immediately straightened.

"This year," he continued, "one group produced an exceptional report."

The whole of the class looked slightly nervous.

The professor read the names.

"Group Five."

Jason froze.

"Jason Carter, Maya Thompson, Daniel Brooks, Bright Cole… Janaya Blake."

The room erupted in murmurs.

"You achieved the highest score in the class."

Jason turned to the group in shock.

"We did it?"

Maya jumped up.

"We did it!"

Daniel grinned!

"We need to celebrate."

Jason nodded immediately.

"Yes. Definitely."

Maya crossed her arms playfully.

"Jason, rumor says you have a billionaire brother."

Jason laughed.

"That's not a rumor."

Everyone leaned forward.

"So it's true?" Daniel asked.

Jason shrugged.

"Yeah… but I can't prove it."

"Why not?" Maya asked.

Jason leaned back in his chair.

"Because he's never home."

Daniel grinned.

"So we have the house to ourselves this weekend?"

Jason smiled.

"Looks like it."

The group exchanged excited looks.

"Party at Jason's house," Maya announced.

Everyone agreed instantly.

Jason stood up and pointed at them.

"But there's one rule."

The group looked at him.

Jason smirked.

"The last person to show up cleans the house after the party."
