Chapter 10 - WELCOME TO SHADOWPEAK

KAEL POV

Shadowpeak compound rose out of the darkness like a fortress carved from the mountain itself.

Kael watched Liora's face as they rode through the entrance gates. Her eyes widened. Her hands tightened around his waist. She was seeing the compound for the first time. Seeing the stone walls. The watchtowers. The warrior barracks. The training grounds stretching out in every direction.

This was nothing like the servant quarters she had known.

This was power made tangible.

The warriors guarding the gates nodded as Kael rode past. They recognized their Alpha heir. But their gazes lingered on Liora. Word was already spreading through the compound. Something had happened at the ritual. Something that had forced Kael to ride back with an Omega female wrapped in his cloak.

Kael led the horse directly to the main hall.

The enormous space was built into the heart of the compound. It served as gathering place and strategy room and the undisputed center of Shadowpeak power. Tonight it was filling with warriors. Word traveled fast in a pack. By the time Kael dismounted and helped Liora down, at least fifty warriors were assembled.

They all stopped moving when they saw her.

Vex appeared from the crowd with his hands raised to quiet the murmuring. His scarred face showed immediate understanding when he saw Liora wearing Kael's cloak. When he saw the mark burned across Kael's chest over his heart. A mark that glowed faintly violet in the torch light. A mark that hadn't been there before the ritual.

The mating bond made visible.

Vex's eyes went wide.

Then he grinned.

Oh this is going to be interesting, he said. His voice carried to every warrior in the hall.

Kael stepped forward with Liora's hand in his.

This is my claimed mate. She is bonded to me by ancient law and by the mating bond that connects our souls. Shadowpeak Pack will protect her with our lives. Any warrior that questions this will face my challenge. Any wolf that raises a hand against her will answer to me.

The warriors exchanged looks.

Some nodded immediately. They trusted Kael. They had followed him into enough battles to know his judgment was sound. But others looked uncertain. An Omega mate was strange. An Omega mate who had shown power beyond measure was dangerous.

An older warrior named Thorne stepped forward.

My Alpha, what is her rank in the pack? How do we integrate her?

Kael's hand was firm on Liora's waist.

She is my mate. Which means she is my equal. She answers to no one but me. And anyone who treats her as less than she is will be challenged.

The finality in his voice left no room for argument.

Vex clapped his hands once.

Show's over. Back to your duties. We have hunters coming from three directions. Walls need reinforcing. Weapons need checking. Move.

The warriors dispersed quickly.

They had been trained well enough to know when an order was absolute. But Kael could see them whispering to each other as they left. Could see the confusion and curiosity and fear mixing on their faces.

An Omega mate was going to complicate everything.

Vex walked over and studied Liora carefully.

She's trembling. Has she eaten?

Not since last night. We rode all night and through the morning.

Vex nodded like this explained something important about her condition.

Get her fed. Get her rested. Get her oriented. Because Marcus is already gathering allies and word is spreading. The council will vote for execution within days. We need to be ready for siege.

He squeezed Kael's shoulder briefly.

And congratulations on the mate. Even if she's going to complicate our war strategy.

Kael led Liora through the halls of Shadowpeak.

The compound was alive with activity. Warriors moving. Supplies being organized. The machinery of a pack preparing for conflict. They passed training grounds where younger wolves were being drilled. Passed armories where weapons were being checked and maintained.

This was a pack built for war.

His chambers were in the highest tower.

They overlooked the entire territory below. The forests stretched out in waves of darkness. The mountains rose in the distance. The moon hung above it all like a witness watching everything unfold.

Kael brought her to the windows.

Liora stood very still as she looked out at the territory below.

So much space. So much open area. So much territory that belonged to Shadowpeak. Her hands were shaking. Her violet eyes were reflecting the moonlight.

Kael stepped behind her and placed his hands on her shoulders.

This is your home now. These are your people. This territory is under your protection as much as mine.

She didn't turn around.

I don't know how to be a mate. I've never had anything. I've never belonged anywhere. I don't know what you expect from me.

Her voice was barely a whisper.

Kael turned her to face him.

I expect nothing but your survival. And maybe, eventually, your trust.

He reached up and brushed a strand of silver hair from her face.

You don't understand yet what claiming you means. You don't understand the bond between us. But you will. I will make sure you understand.

Liora looked at the mating mark burning across his chest.

It's visible. Everyone can see it. Everyone knows what we are to each other now.

Yes.

But I'm an Omega. I have no rank. I have no power except the power that woke up in the stone. How can an Omega be an Alpha's mate?

Kael pulled her close.

Because the old rules don't apply to you anymore. Because you commanded Alphas with your mind. Because the universe recognized you as something that had never existed before. And because the moment I saw you, I knew. I knew you were the only thing I would ever need.

He kissed her.

It was gentle. It was asking permission. It was offering shelter from the chaos outside.

Liora kissed him back.

For a moment, the fear seemed to fade. For a moment, there was just the two of them. Just this connection that transcended everything else. Just the mating bond burning between them like something alive.

Then someone knocked on the chamber door.

Kael pulled back and Liora stepped away quickly. The knock came again, harder this time. More urgent.

Enter, Kael called out.

A young female warrior appeared in the doorway. She was breathless from running. Her eyes were wide with panic.

My Alpha, hunters have breached the outer walls. They're moving through the compound. We have maybe minutes before they reach the main tower.

The hunters hadn't waited for a siege.

They had attacked immediately, trying to catch Shadowpeak unprepared. Trying to kill Liora before she could settle into the protection of Kael's pack.

Kael's face hardened into cold calculation.

Get her to the vault. It's the most protected chamber in the compound. Lock the doors. You stay with her. No one enters without my personal word.

Liora grabbed his arm.

Where are you going?

To fight.

He was already moving toward the door.

But Liora held him back.

You can't leave me here. I can fight. I have power. I can help you.

Kael looked into her violet eyes.

You can help me by staying alive. That's all I need from you right now. Stay alive. Everything else is secondary.

The female warrior was already gesturing for Liora to follow.

Kael, we need to move, the warrior said urgently.

He kissed Liora's forehead one more time.

I will come back for you. That is a promise.

Then he was gone.

Liora heard him shouting orders before he even reached the stairs. Heard the organized chaos of the pack preparing for combat. Heard the sounds of violence beginning to echo through the compound.

The female warrior was pulling her toward the vault.

They ran through the corridors as the sounds of battle grew closer. Liora could hear metal on metal. Could hear wolves howling. Could hear screams that might have been from her own pack or from the hunters trying to breach their defenses.

The vault was deep underground. Beneath stone and iron and layers of protection that made it nearly impossible to breach.

The female warrior locked the doors behind them and drew her weapon.

We wait here. The Alpha will handle this.

But Liora's hands were shaking.

In minutes she had gone from powerful to helpless. From commanding Alphas to hiding in a basement while males fought over her. From invisible to the most hunted female in the world.

The sounds of battle raged above them.

And Liora realized something terrible.

Being claimed by Kael hadn't saved her.

It had only made the target on her back larger.
