Chapter 6 - Part 6 — The Night Everything Almost Broke

Part 6 — The Night Everything Almost Broke

After that Saturday, nothing felt safe anymore. Not the terrace, not the silence, not even the moments we shared. Everything had become fragile, like one small mistake could break it all.

The next few days were different. We didn't meet. Not on the terrace, not anywhere. It wasn't planned, but it happened. Maybe both of us were scared. Maybe we were trying to protect what we had… by staying away.

But staying away didn't make it easier.

It made it worse.

Every time I heard her voice from inside the house, my heart reacted. Every small glimpse of her made everything come back—the terrace, her hand in mine, her "I wanted to"… everything.

And then one evening, something unexpected happened.

It was late. Around 8 or maybe 9. The house was quiet. I was in my room, trying to focus on something, anything… but failing.

And then—

A soft knock on my door.

My heart skipped.

No one usually knocked like that.

Slow. Careful.

Almost secret.

I walked towards the door slowly and opened it.

And for a second…

I froze.

It was her.

Ammy.

Standing right in front of me.

My heart started racing instantly.

"What are you doing here?" I whispered.

She looked nervous. More than ever before.

"Mom is not home…" she said quickly. "She went out… and Sam is sleeping."

I didn't know what to say.

This was new.

This was riskier than anything before.

"Ammy… if someone sees—"

"I know," she interrupted softly. "But I had to talk to you."

There was something in her voice.

Something serious.

I stepped aside and she came inside my room slowly, looking around like she was scared someone might appear any second.

The room suddenly felt smaller.

Quieter.

Heavier.

We stood there for a moment, not saying anything.

Just looking at each other.

"What happened?" I asked finally.

She didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she walked a little closer.

Too close.

Closer than ever before.

"My mom…" she started, her voice shaking, "…she's getting suspicious."

My chest tightened.

"What do you mean?"

"She asked me today… why I go to the terrace so much. She's noticing things."

A cold fear ran through me.

This was bad.

Really bad.

"If she finds out…" she continued, "…we'll have to leave. Immediately."

Silence.

Heavy silence.

I didn't know what to say.

For the first time… I felt helpless.

"So what do we do?" I asked quietly.

She looked at me.

And for the first time…

Her eyes weren't just scared.

They were emotional.

Deep.

"I don't want to stop…" she said.

That line hit harder than anything else.

Neither did I.

But reality was standing right in front of us.

Danger.

Consequences.

Everything.

"We have to be careful," I said slowly.

She nodded.

But neither of us moved.

Neither of us stepped back.

There was something pulling us closer.

Stronger than fear.

Stronger than logic.

And before I could think—

She said softly,

"Do you… feel the same?"

My heart stopped.

There it was.

The question.

The one I had been avoiding.

The one I didn't have the courage to say.

And now…

She said it first.

I looked into her eyes.

And for the first time…

I didn't hide.

"Yes."

Just one word.

But it carried everything.

Everything I felt.

Everything I couldn't say before.

Her eyes softened.

And for a moment…

Everything felt calm.

Peaceful.

Real.

But then—

A sound.

The main gate.

Opening.

Both of us froze.

Her face lost all color.

"Mom…" she whispered.

Panic hit instantly.

This was worse than before.

Much worse.

She was inside my room.

If we got caught now…

There was no explanation.

No escape.

"What do we do?" I said quickly.

Her breathing became uneven.

Fast.

"We can't go outside," she said. "She'll see us."

Footsteps.

Closer.

Closer.

My mind went blank.

Think.

Think fast.

And then—

"Inside," I said, pointing towards the small storage space near the wardrobe.

There was barely any space.

But no other option.

She didn't argue.

We both squeezed inside.

Close.

Too close.

I could feel her heartbeat.

Fast.

Loud.

Matching mine.

We stayed still.

Completely still.

The door opened.

Her mother's voice.

"Why is this light on?"

My heart was about to explode.

She stepped inside the room.

I could hear her movements.

Every step.

Every breath.

If she came closer…

It was over.

I held my breath.

Seconds felt like minutes.

Minutes felt like forever.

And then—

Silence.

A pause.

And slowly…

The footsteps moved away.

The door closed.

We didn't move.

Not yet.

We waited.

Until we were sure she was gone.

Only then…

We slowly stepped out.

Breathing heavily.

Alive.

Safe.

For now.

She looked at me.

Her eyes filled with fear…

But also something stronger.

Something deeper.

"We can't keep doing this…" she whispered.

But her voice didn't sound convinced.

Because both of us knew—

We already crossed the line.

And there was no going back.
