Chapter 1 - The Girl Who Ate Chalk

The first thing the class teacher noticed was the sound.

It was not the sound of crying, nor laughter, nor the scraping of chairs on the classroom floor.

It was a small, determined crunch.

A very suspicious crunch.

Sunlight fell in golden rectangles across the dusty classroom of Class 1-B.

The ceiling fan creaked like an old storyteller, lazily stirring the humid morning air.

Outside, the school playground shimmered under the early summer heat, the distant shouts of older children floating in like fragments of another universe.

Inside, twenty tiny humans sat at wooden desks, smelling faintly of coconut oil, fresh notebooks, and nervous excitement.

And at the very last bench near the window sat a girl with chalk dust on her lips.

Her name was Ananya Deshmukh.

She chewed thoughtfully, her round cheeks moving in slow circles as if she were tasting something gourmet instead of a piece of stolen classroom chalk.

Her short, uneven hair stuck out in stubborn directions, like it had lost an argument with a comb and refused to apologize.

There were faint scratches on both her knees, visible beneath the hem of her blue pinafore.

Her eyes sparkled.

Not with guilt.

With curiosity.

"Is it sweet?" she whispered to herself, frowning in concentration.

"No...more like cloud-flavored."

A horrified gasp rose from the bench in front of her.

A boy turned around slowly, like someone witnessing a natural disaster unfold in real time.

He had neat bowl-cut hair and wore tiny glasses that were slightly too big for his face.

His shirt was tucked in perfectly, his socks pulled up with military discipline.

Even his shoelaces seemed serious.

This was Rohit Kulkarni.

He stared at her.

She stared back.

For three seconds, the world held its breath.

Then she grinned.

It was not a polite grin.

It was the grin of a creature who had just discovered she could cause chaos with very little effort.

"Want some?" she asked generously, holding up the half-eaten chalk like a sacred offering.

Rohit's brain stopped functioning.

Somewhere in his small, organized universe, logic fell off a cliff.

"You...you can't eat that," he finally managed, his voice trembling with responsibility.

"Why?" she demanded.

"Because it's not food."

She considered this.

Her eyebrows pulled together dramatically.

Then she took another bite.

The crunch echoed like thunder.

In front of the class, Miss Fernandes was writing the alphabet on the blackboard with passionate dedication.

Her handwriting curved like poetry, each letter a tiny work of art.

She did not yet realize that behind her, a silent war between common sense and chaos had already begun.

Ananya wiped her chalk-covered fingers on her pinafore and leaned closer to Rohit.

"My mother says I should try new things," she explained solemnly.

"This is new."

Rohit felt something strange happen inside his chest.

It was not admiration.

It was not fear.

It was the terrifying realization that his life had just become permanently complicated.

Behind them, another boy had started sniffing loudly.

Kabir- round-faced and perpetually on the edge of tears- looked like he might faint at any moment.

Next to him sat Vihaan, who watched the entire scene with the detached interest of a scientist observing experimental rats.

Near the window, a girl with a perfect ponytail flipped her hair in disgust.

"This school is unbelievable," Myra announced to no one in particular.

"My previous school had air conditioning."

Ananya suddenly stood on her bench.

The movement was so sudden that Rohit's glasses slid down his nose in shock.

"I DECLARE," she shouted, raising the chalk like a sword, "that this classroom is boring!"

Twenty heads turned.

Miss Fernandes froze mid-alphabet.

Outside, a crow cawed as if offering commentary.

Silence spread like spilled ink.

Then Ananya smiled- wide, fearless, unstoppable.

"Let's make it fun."

In that moment, no one knew that this was the beginning.

Of scrapped knees and shared umbrellas.

Of broken promises and healed hearts.

Of jealousy, laughter, distance, and return.

Of a boy who would quietly love the same girl for decades.

And a girl who would spend her whole life turning ordinary days into unforgettable stories.

The chalk fell from her hand, leaving a tiny white cloud in the sunlight.

And somewhere deep in Rohit Kulkarni's six-year-old heart.

Something irreversible began.
