Naruto sat cross-legged in front of his bedroom mirror, shirt tossed somewhere behind him as he studied his stomach. His failed attempt at roof hopping had annoyed him enough that he'd come straight home instead of finding something else to do. With one hand resting against his abdomen, he pushed a small amount of chakra toward the seal.
Black markings spread across his stomach. The familiar spiral of the Shiki Fūin appeared first, its eight-pointed structure expanding outward around his navel. Almost directly over it sat Orochimaru's work, the Four Elements Seal cutting across the original matrix like someone had taken a different puzzle and forced its pieces into places they didn't belong.
Naruto frowned.
"Ugly bastard."
Until recently, that was about as much as he would've understood. One seal was his, one wasn't, and the second one was apparently ruining his chakra control. Now his eyes lingered over individual lines, intersections, containment points, and places where the two formulas overlapped.
Something in his mind clicked.

Naruto leaned closer to the mirror. The Shiki Fūin wasn't merely sitting underneath Orochimaru's seal.
It was fighting it.
Not consciously, obviously, but the eight-pointed Uzumaki spiral was built around containment, circulation, and controlled exchange. Chakra entering the formula was guided through a balanced network, redirected between eight major pathways before being released back into Naruto's chakra system. Orochimaru's Four Elements Seal had been placed directly over that network.
The foreign seal was trying to disrupt the original matrix's symmetry, interfering with those pathways and breaking the balanced circulation between them. Normally, Naruto realized, that probably would've been enough to suppress whatever seal it had been placed over. Except the Shiki Fūin was absurdly stubborn.
Every time the Four Elements Seal forced chakra away from one pathway, the underlying spiral compensated by redirecting it through another. The invading seal would suppress that route, causing the Shiki Fūin to compensate again. Instead of one seal simply overpowering the other, both formulas were constantly forcing Naruto's chakra into different routes.
Naruto's eyes widened.
"So they're... fighting over where my chakra goes."
That explained everything. His chakra network wasn't simply blocked; it was receiving constantly changing instructions from two conflicting sealing arrays. One moment chakra flowed normally, the next it was constricted, redirected, or suddenly released when the Shiki Fūin compensated.
For something crude like reinforcing his muscles, Naruto could overpower the instability with sheer chakra. Delicate manipulation like tree walking, water walking, or elemental nature transformation was another story entirely. Tiny changes mattered during those techniques, and his chakra pathways were changing underneath him every time he tried.
It was a nightmare.

"I figured you out."
His grin lasted approximately three seconds.
"...Now how do I get you off?"
Naruto examined the overlapping seals again. He could recognize several points that seemed important to maintaining Orochimaru's formula but recognizing something and knowing how to safely dismantle it were apparently two very different things. Breaking the wrong connection might collapse the Four Elements Seal harmlessly—or interfere with the Shiki Fūin containing a giant fox inside him.
Naruto slowly removed his hand from his stomach. The markings faded as he made perhaps one of the smartest decisions of his young life.
"Yeah. Not touching that."
Understanding the problem was progress. Removing it required someone who knew a hell of a lot more about Fūinjutsu than he did.
For now.
At exactly seven the next morning, Naruto arrived at Training Ground Seven to find Sakura waiting and Sasuke arriving shortly behind him. There was only one person missing, and unfortunately, it was the one who had ordered them there at seven.
Naruto stared at the empty training ground.
"I knew it."
Forty-five minutes later, Kakashi appeared in a swirl of leaves and pleasantly wished them good morning. Three murderous expressions immediately settled on him, but their sensei merely nodded in approval.
"Excellent. You're all alert."
"I'M GOING TO KILL YOU!"
"Also energetic."
Before Naruto could commit an extremely justified murder, another person emerged from behind the trees. Iruka smiled awkwardly and raised one hand.
"Morning."
Naruto's anger vanished.
"Iruka-sensei?"
Kakashi handed each genin a folded map of Konoha marked with several search zones. "This morning's exercise is search, rescue, and destroy. A hostile shinobi has infiltrated Konoha, taken a civilian hostage, and is attempting to escape the village."

Iruka raised his hand. "I'm the accomplice."
Naruto stared at him.
"You don't look very evil."
"I can be evil."
"Say something evil."
Iruka hesitated. "...I'll assign homework?"
Naruto recoiled.
"Monster."
Sakura smacked him while Kakashi continued. Their hostage was a training dummy, and Team Seven had to locate it, recover it, then prevent both hostile shinobi from reaching the northern boundary. The moment Kakashi finished explaining, he and Iruka disappeared.
Twenty minutes later, Team Seven was moving across Konoha's rooftops. Sakura had found their first clue near the marketplace, Sasuke determined the likely direction of travel, and Naruto sent pairs of Shadow Clones across neighboring routes to search ahead.
Three clones suddenly vanished.
"Found them."
They intercepted Iruka in the eastern residential district with the dummy thrown over his shoulder. Naruto and Sasuke pursued while Sakura moved along a parallel street to cut him off, but they had barely started before Kakashi ambushed Sasuke from below.
Four seconds later, Sasuke crashed through someone's laundry and Naruto found himself thrown directly into Sakura. Kakashi disappeared before either could recover, leaving the three genin in an irritated pile.
"This isn't working," Sasuke muttered.
"No kidding."
Sakura pushed Naruto off her. "We're reacting to them. Iruka-sensei runs, we chase. Kakashi attacks, we fight. They're controlling everything."
Naruto stopped complaining.
Their second attempt was different.
Naruto spread his clones across likely routes instead of directly chasing Iruka. Sakura narrowed the possible escape paths while Sasuke remained between their search groups, ready to reinforce whichever one found the hostage. When they finally cornered Iruka near an old storage district, nobody rushed.
Naruto approached openly while Sasuke and Sakura circled from opposite sides. Iruka saw Naruto and immediately recognized the obvious distraction, but Kakashi appeared behind the blond before the trap could close.
Naruto spun and blocked the first strike. Kakashi forced him backward with the second while Iruka broke toward an escape route, prompting Sasuke to move after the hostage. Kakashi immediately shifted to intercept.
Naruto lunged.
He wrapped both arms around Kakashi's torso, leaving himself completely exposed.
"NOW!"
Kakashi drove an elbow into Naruto's back, then tapped two fingers against his neck.
"Dead."
POOF!
Kakashi's eye narrowed as the Shadow Clone vanished.
Sakura ripped the dummy from Iruka's grip at the same instant. Sasuke slid between them with his kunai raised while the real Naruto dropped from above, forcing Iruka backward with a two-footed kick.
"Got him!"
Naruto landed beside Sasuke while Sakura retreated with the rescued hostage. For the first time since the exercise began, Team Seven had actually gotten one over on both instructors.
Then Kakashi appeared on a nearby rooftop.
"You recovered the hostage."
Naruto grinned. "So we win?"
"No."
Kakashi tilted his head toward Iruka. "The hostile shinobi are still inside the village."
Sakura understood first. Recovering the hostage had only completed part of the mission; Kakashi and Iruka still had to be prevented from escaping.
Iruka smiled.
Then disappeared.
Naruto immediately moved after him before Sakura caught his jacket and nearly strangled him. "Wait! They want us to chase."
Sasuke glanced north. "If Kakashi wants us running straight for the gate, going straight for the gate is stupid."
Naruto paused.
"...I was going straight for the gate."
"We know."
Sakura crouched over their map. Only three realistic routes remained if the instructors wanted to reach the northern boundary quickly, meaning Team Seven didn't actually need to catch them immediately.
They needed to cut them off.
Naruto created twelve clones and divided them between intersections, rooftops, and alleys leading north. The first pair vanished several minutes later, followed quickly by another.
"West! Warehouse district!"
The three changed direction together. Naruto absorbed the clones' memories while running and realized something else was wrong.
"Kakashi's behind us somewhere."
Sakura glanced around. "How do you know?"
"Because I haven't seen him."
Sasuke's expression hardened.
"He's hunting us."
They reached the warehouse district as Iruka crossed the rooftops ahead. This time Naruto and Sasuke attacked from separate directions while Sakura remained behind them with the hostage, gradually forcing Iruka away from his preferred route instead of simply following him.
Iruka changed direction.
Naruto followed.
Sasuke didn't.
Iruka realized it a second too late.
They were herding him.
Sasuke intercepted Iruka with a clash of kunai while Naruto attacked from the opposite side. Iruka escaped upward, only for wire Sakura had stretched between two buildings to force him away from the northern route.
Naruto grinned.
"Gotcha!"
A hand grabbed his collar.
"Oh no."
Kakashi threw him through a wooden crate.
By the time Naruto climbed out, Kakashi and Iruka had regrouped between Team Seven and the northern boundary. Sakura handed the dummy to a Naruto clone that carried it away from the fight while Sasuke stepped beside Naruto.
"This feels unfair," Naruto complained.
"Hostile shinobi rarely design fair missions," Kakashi replied.
Nobody rushed forward.
That alone made Kakashi's eye sharpen.
"We can't beat them," Naruto admitted.
"Obviously," Sasuke said.
"Wow. Thanks."
"It's Kakashi."
"...Fair."
Sakura ignored them and looked toward the boundary. "We don't need to beat them. We just need to keep them here."
Naruto understood.
Containment.
Not victory.
Kakashi moved first.
The difference between understanding the objective and accomplishing it became obvious almost immediately. Naruto flooded Kakashi's blind spots with clones while Sasuke used them as moving cover, but their sensei dismantled the attacks almost casually. Sakura fared better than expected against Iruka, yet both instructors steadily pushed them backward.
The boundary was getting closer.
Twenty meters.
Maybe less.
Naruto's eyes narrowed. Kakashi and Iruka only needed one opening, while Team Seven needed to deny every single one.
"Sasuke! Take Iruka!"
Sasuke moved without arguing, joining Sakura and forcing Iruka away from Kakashi. Their sensei immediately tried to reconnect with him, only for Naruto to step directly into his path.
Kakashi stopped.
"You know you can't stop me."
Naruto grinned.
"Don't need to."
Kakashi vanished.
Naruto barely turned before a fist slammed into his guard and sent him sliding backward. He threw three clones into the next exchange, but Kakashi destroyed all of them and moved past him toward Sasuke and Sakura.
Naruto saw where he was going.
"No you don't!"

Naruto exploded forward and caught Kakashi around the waist just as he reappeared. The sudden burst of speed made his sensei stumble a single step, giving Naruto enough time to lock both arms around him.

Naruto could see Sasuke and Sakura behind him, both driving Iruka farther from the boundary. He also remembered the optional objective floating somewhere in the back of his mind.
Nobody gets taken out.
He tightened his grip anyway.
"Yeah."
Kakashi's palm struck his chest. Naruto held on through the first simulated killing blow and through a second strike to his ribs, buying another precious second before Kakashi touched two fingers against his throat.
"Dead."
Naruto released him and dropped.
Kakashi turned immediately.
Too late.
Sasuke stood over Iruka with a kunai at his neck while Sakura blocked the route toward the boundary. The hostage was safe, Iruka was captured, and Naruto's brief delay had left Kakashi without enough time to escape alone.
Kakashi stopped.
"Team Seven succeeds."
Naruto's eyes flew open.
"YES!"
"You're dead."
Naruto closed them again.
"...Yayyy."
Ten minutes later, Team Seven sat beneath a tree at Training Ground Seven. Naruto had been restored to life under the extremely generous rules of pretend death and had already celebrated several times.
Sakura was less enthusiastic.
"You died."
"We won."
"YOU DIED."
Naruto pointed toward Sasuke. "He didn't."
Sasuke actually came to Naruto's defense. "He made the correct choice. Kakashi would've reached us otherwise."
Naruto grinned at Sakura.
"See?"
"That doesn't make it good."
Kakashi's voice killed Naruto's smile.
"No. It doesn't."
Their sensei stood in front of them with his hands in his pockets. "You recovered the hostage, prevented both hostile shinobi from escaping, and adapted when your first approach failed. You completed the mission."
His eye settled on Naruto.
"But you lost a teammate."

Oddly, he wasn't angry.
"In a real mission," Kakashi continued, "Naruto wouldn't stand up a minute later and come home with you."
Sakura's expression tightened.
Naruto dismissed the screen. "But they would've gotten the hostage out."
"Maybe."
Naruto frowned.
"That's the problem."
Kakashi looked between all three of them. "Sometimes sacrifice is necessary. There will be missions where completing the objective costs something, and pretending otherwise will get people killed."
His attention returned to Naruto.
"But don't confuse being willing to sacrifice yourself with being eager to."
Naruto blinked.
"You found a solution that required you to stay behind, and it worked. But Sasuke and Sakura never got the opportunity to decide whether there was another solution."
Naruto looked toward them.
Sasuke's expression had hardened. "I could've covered you."
"Kakashi would've gotten past you."
"Maybe."
Naruto didn't like hearing his own argument thrown back at him.
"But you decided that for me."
That shut him up.
Iruka leaned against the tree beside Kakashi. "That's why you do exercises like this. You learn what decisions you make under pressure before those decisions start getting people killed."
Sakura sighed and looked toward the two instructors. "We still couldn't actually beat either of you."
"No," Iruka admitted.
Naruto frowned. "You could've hesitated more."
"I was hesitating."
Naruto stared at him.
Sasuke's expression darkened. "How much were you holding back?"
Kakashi and Iruka exchanged a glance.
Naruto immediately disliked that glance.
"Enough," Kakashi said.
Naruto fell backward into the grass.
"We suck."
"We kind of do," Sakura admitted.
Kakashi's eye curved slightly. "Yesterday, you were three genin who happened to be assigned to the same team. Today, for a few moments, you actually operated like a squad."
Naruto stared toward the clouds as the words settled over him. He thought about the lost bonus, then Kakashi's fingers against his throat and how easily a pretend death had solved his problem.
Next time might not be pretend.
