Chapter 1 - CHAPTER 1 Reality in a Dream(Narrated by David)

The morning air carried the scent of damp earth and fresh grass. Dawn had barely broken over the quiet streets, yet the world already felt alive in that silent way only early mornings possess.

I adjusted my pace as I jogged beside her father along the road leading from Ntinda-Kiwatule toward the clinic.

He was a strong man for someone who had carried so many burdens. Even while running, his breathing remained steady, his posture upright.

For several minutes we moved in silence.

The only sounds were our footsteps and the distant hum of early traffic somewhere beyond the hills.

Then he spoke.

"You see, my son," he said slowly, "life has a strange way of testing people when they least expect it."

I glanced at him.

There was something unusual in his tone — something deeper than ordinary conversation.

"What do you mean?" I asked.

He slowed his pace slightly.

"There was a time when my family lived very differently," he said.

His eyes seemed to look far beyond the road ahead.

"We owned cars. Businesses. Land. Even plans to expand our companies beyond this city."

I had never heard him speak this openly before.

"To everyone around us, we looked like a perfect family," he continued.

He paused.

"But life changed."

The words hung heavily in the air.

"When my daughter became ill, everything began to disappear."

The early sunlight reflected in his eyes.

"Medical bills. Treatments. Specialists. Hospitals. We spent years trying to help her recover."

I remembered Precious telling me about her childhood accident — the bone injury that nearly changed her life forever.

But hearing her father describe it was different.

It sounded like a battle.

"People think wealth disappears suddenly," he said quietly.

"But in truth… it fades slowly."

His voice lowered.

"One business closes. Another fails. A car must be sold. A house must be rented instead of owned."

He looked toward the rising sun.

"But when you love your children, you give everything without counting the cost."

I felt something shift inside me.

Until that moment, I had only seen him as a strict father protecting his daughter.

Now I saw something else.

A man who had sacrificed his entire world.

And strangely…

It felt as if I had stepped into a dream where I was meant to witness it.
