Chapter 16 - The Impact

Gravity vanished entirely. Kaelen plummeted into the suffocating darkness of the fractured chasm. The roaring wind deafened him. Jagged chunks of frozen stone and shattered metal rained down alongside them.

He tightened his grip around Lyra's waist. The young knight was completely unconscious. Her silver armor was cracked and devoid of any magical light. She had burned out her entire core to overcharge his dagger. Now she was defenseless in a deadly freefall.

Kaelen looked down. The pitch black abyss offered no clues. He had no idea how deep the chasm went. Hitting the bottom at terminal velocity would instantly liquefy his organs. His Ironclad Carapace could stop blades, but it could not rewrite the laws of physics.

A faint, freezing blue mist illuminated the darkness above them.

It was the shattered remains of the Silver Rank serpent's core. The explosive singularity had pulverized the beast, but the sheer density of its magic refused to dissipate. The ambient essence tumbled down the chasm like a glowing blue waterfall.

The Void Core behind Kaelen's sternum throbbed violently. The ravenous hunger ignited. It did not care about the fatal drop. It only wanted to feed.

Kaelen reached his free hand upward toward the descending blue mist.

"Consume it all," Kaelen roared over the rushing wind.

Shadowy tendrils erupted from his palm and his chest. They whipped upward, latching onto the falling cloud of Silver Tier magic. The dark Aether acted like a massive vacuum. It violently sucked the freezing blue mist directly into Kaelen's body.

Liquid ice flooded his veins. The agonizing pain of absorption clashed with the searing heat still lingering from Lyra's explosive spell. Kaelen gritted his teeth until he tasted blood. The conflicting energies threatened to tear his body apart from the inside out.

The ethereal interface erupted in a blinding, vibrating purple hue.

[Ambient Silver Rank Essence Devoured.]

[Host physiology adapting to high density magic.]

[Strength +15]

[Agility +12]

[Stamina +20]

[Skill Extraction Successful.]

[Skill Acquired: Kinetic Absorption (Passive)]

[Description: Host body temporarily stores and nullifies blunt force trauma. Stored kinetic energy must be released within ten seconds to avoid internal tissue damage.]

Kaelen stared at the glowing purple text. The system had just handed him a miracle.

The pitch black darkness below them suddenly broke. A jagged floor of solid bedrock rushed upward at terrifying speed. They had mere seconds before impact.

Kaelen spun his body in midair. He pulled Lyra tightly against his chest, shielding her fragile frame with his own magically hardened torso. He positioned his heavy boots to take the absolute brunt of the landing.

He braced every single muscle in his legs.

They hit the ground.

The impact was apocalyptic. The solid bedrock shattered like fragile glass under Kaelen's boots. A massive crater formed instantly, sending shockwaves of pulverized stone echoing through the dark cavern.

Kaelen's newly acquired Kinetic Absorption passive activated instantly. The terrifying momentum of their fall did not crush his bones. Instead, the kinetic energy pooled violently into his leg muscles, causing them to bulge and glow with an unstable, blinding white light.

The system flashed a critical crimson warning.

[Warning. Kinetic storage at maximum capacity. Release immediately.]

Kaelen felt his muscles tearing under the immense pressure. He dropped Lyra safely onto the soft dust. He turned toward the nearest solid cavern wall, pulled his right arm back, and channeled the stored kinetic energy directly into his fist.

He punched the bedrock.

The stored energy released in a devastating shockwave. The cavern wall exploded outward. Tons of solid rock were pulverized into fine powder, creating a massive new tunnel that collapsed inward on itself.

Kaelen fell to his knees, panting heavily. His right arm was completely numb. The purple interface flickered reassuringly before fading into the background. He had survived.

He crawled over to Lyra. He pressed two fingers to her neck. Her pulse was weak but steady. The fractured crystal on her chestplate was dull, but she was no longer leaking volatile heat. The magical overload had finally stabilized.

Kaelen stood up and surveyed their surroundings. The bioluminescent fungi in the cavern provided a faint green light. At the edge of the massive crater he had just created, a heavy set of pristine bronze doors stood completely untouched.

Above the doors, glowing Aetheric runes spelled out two words.

TRIAL COMPLETE.

Kaelen let out a harsh, cynical laugh. The Vanguard Guild had designed this labyrinth to test initiates against weak mechanical spiders. They never expected anyone to awaken a Silver Rank Abyssal Undead and detonate the entire lower floor.

He hauled Lyra onto his shoulder, carrying her in a secure carry. He walked toward the bronze doors and pushed them open with his newly enhanced Bronze Tier strength.

Blinding golden sunlight flooded his vision.

Kaelen stepped out of the dark stairwell and back into the massive central courtyard of the Vanguard Guild Hub.

The courtyard was packed with hundreds of wealthy initiates and Platinum armored guards. They were all gathered around a raised podium. Standing on the podium was Lord Valerius. The arrogant blonde noble was covered in fake dirt, passionately recounting a heroic tale to the Guild Masters.

"The floor collapsed without warning," Valerius proclaimed loudly, faking a tone of deep sorrow. "My loyal mercenaries sacrificed themselves to save me. I tried to reach Lady Lyra, but the slum rat dragged her down into the abyss with him. They were crushed instantly. It was a tragedy."

The Guild Masters nodded solemnly.

Kaelen stepped fully into the courtyard. He was covered in gray ash, thick mud, and the dark blood of the mercenaries he had slaughtered. He casually tossed the unconscious Lyra into the arms of a stunned Guild healer.

"You need to work on your storytelling, Valerius," Kaelen's voice cut through the silent courtyard like a sharpened blade.

Valerius turned around. All the color instantly drained from the noble's face.

Kaelen smiled coldly, his eyes burning with an abyssal black hunger. "I am still hungry."
