Eliza's POV
I was standing in the kitchen, gripping the edge of the counter trying the swallow the hunger.
"Eliza" a soft voice called out.
"Yes ma'am " I responded as I turned to her.
Maid Clara
She was looking at me with kind eyes.
"Your door doesn't have a lock,right?" She asked.
My gaze lifted.
I nodded.
She let out a small sigh in understanding.
She looked down before speaking again.
"Would you like to come to my home?" She asked.
The door bell rang.
We had to rush to the door.
Maid Clara opened the door.
A man.
"Sir?" Maid Clara asked
"Dave?" He asked
Maid Clara looked at me and I nodded.
I walked towards Sir Dave's room and knocked.
He opened the door in seconds.
"Sir, Someone is here" I said.
He immediately smiled.
So wide
And ran past me.
I followed him.
Maid Clara was standing infront of the couch and I stood beside her.
The man got inside as Sir Dave invited him with a dramatic gesture.
The man didn't smile but looked at Sir Dave with an annoyed expression.
"What do you want to drink, Sir?" Maid Clara asked as they settled on the couch.
"Nothing" He said, his voice so sharp and grumpy.
Maid Clara turned to me and we walked back to the kitchen.
"Did he come yesterday?" She asked midway.
"I don't know. I put the table infront of the door to stop him from coming in."
I paused
"I didn't hear any knocks"
We reached the kitchen
She sighed as if she is relieved.
"Eliza?" She called
"Hmm?" I asked
"I have been there" she said, her voice low and steady.
I looked at her
"I wished for a safe place" she continued.
My eyes were teary.
She cupped my face with one hand.
"I know how you feel. So come to my home. You need rest." She paused
"At least a peaceful night"
A tear escaped. I hated that... I hated being vulnerable like this.
She gently wiped it off with her thumb.
"I might be a burden" I said, my voice urgent and hesitant at the same time.
She exhaled. A smile appeared across her face.
She gently patted my arm
"I will kick you out when you become a burden"
A small laugh escaped our mouth.
"Come with me" she said
I nodded.
"I wish I could find another job" I told her.
"We can look for it" she said.
"ELIZA" Madam Mae called out.
I walked fast to the living room.
The man and Sir Dave wasn't there
"Ma'am" I said.
"I need a hot coffee" she said
"Yes, ma'am"
I walked back to the kitchen.
I started making the coffee...
"Say ahh" Maid Clara said
I opened my mouth a little and she put a piece of bread in it.
I smiled at her..
I walked back to madam Mae with the coffee in my hand, hot enough.
She was sitting on the couch, hands pressing her temple.
"Ma'am" my voice low
She opened her eyes and gestured me to put it on the table.
I carefully put it there.
And left.
I wanted to ask if she needed a massage but I didn't dare to.
"Eliza, pack your bag." Maid Clara said as she lowered her bag to her side.
I nodded and got inside my room.
I grabbed my bag from under the bed and put it down on the bed.
I took off the apron and folded it nicely to put in my bag.
I walked back to the kitchen with the bag in my hand.
Maid Clara was coming to me with the coffee mug Madam Mae left on the table.
She washed it and put it upside down on the counter.
She turned to me and met my gaze.
"Let's go?" She asked.
I smiled and nodded.
We walked outside but we didn't see that man and Sir Dave on the courtyard until Sir Dave called out my name.
"Eliza" I was startled but I turned.
I thought it was Mr Daniel for a moment.
He walked up to me.
I noticed that man's frown. We were just some feet away.
"You're leaving?" Sir Dave asked.
"I am taking her with me" Maid Clara said.
I nodded when he looked at me.
"Can I ask your last name?" He asked.
My throat tightened, my fingers clutching my dress.
I opened my mouth and closed.
"I.. I am an orphan" I said.
It is what it is.
