Chapter 7 - The Smallest Member

The first sign that something had changed in the Kang residence appeared one quiet morning in early spring.

It was not dramatic.

There were no alarms or urgent phone calls.

Instead, it began with something much simpler.

Han Sooah woke up earlier than usual.

For a few moments she simply lay in bed, staring quietly at the soft morning light filtering through the tall windows of their bedroom. The curtains moved slightly with the breeze from the open balcony door, and the distant city of Seoul stretched far beyond the hillside where the Kang residence stood.

Normally, Sooah's mornings followed a precise routine.

Shower.

Breakfast.

Car waiting outside by 7:30.

Another long day managing operations at Hanseong Holdings and coordinating strategic decisions with the executives of KGI Group.

But this morning something felt… strange.

Her stomach felt unsettled.

Not painful.

Just unusual.

She frowned slightly.

Then quietly slipped out of bed.

Behind her, Kang Daehyun remained completely asleep, wrapped in the blanket like a giant, comfortable cocoon. His hair was messy, his breathing deep and steady, and his arm still rested across the pillow where she had been moments earlier.

He slept like someone without responsibilities.

Which, in truth, he mostly was.

Sooah smiled faintly before leaving the room.

A Quiet Realization

Two hours later she sat inside a private medical clinic not far from the financial district.

The doctor studied the test results calmly.

Then looked up.

"Well," she said gently.

"It seems congratulations are in order."

Sooah blinked.

"Congratulations?"

"Yes."

The doctor turned the screen slightly so Sooah could see the result.

"You're pregnant."

For a moment the room felt completely silent.

Not shocking.

Not overwhelming.

Just… still.

Sooah placed a hand lightly against her stomach.

It felt the same as always.

Yet suddenly it meant something entirely different.

Telling Him

When Sooah returned home that evening, Daehyun was once again occupying his usual position on the living room couch.

Controller in hand.

Game paused mid-battle.

A half-eaten bag of chips resting on his chest.

He looked up as she entered.

"You're home."

"Yes."

"You look serious."

She placed her bag on the table and walked over.

"Daehyun."

"Yeah?"

"I went to the doctor today."

He sat up slightly.

"…are you okay?"

"Yes."

"Then why are you looking at me like that?"

She hesitated for just a moment.

Then said the words simply.

"We're having a baby."

For three seconds Daehyun did not move.

Or blink.

Or breathe.

Then—

"…what?"

She repeated it calmly.

"I'm pregnant."

His brain struggled to process the information.

"A baby."

"Yes."

"A human baby?"

"Yes."

"Ours?"

"…yes."

He stared at her.

Then slowly looked down at his own stomach.

Then back at her.

Then down again.

"…how did that happen?"

Sooah crossed her arms.

"You seriously need me to explain that?"

"No," he said quickly.

"I remember the general process."

The Shock

Daehyun stood up suddenly.

Then sat down again.

Then stood up again.

His face looked completely bewildered.

"A baby," he repeated quietly.

"Yes."

He ran a hand through his hair.

"…I'm going to be a father."

"Yes."

"I don't know how to be a father."

Sooah stepped closer and gently took his hand.

"You'll learn."

He looked at her stomach again.

"Is it already in there?"

"Yes."

"Like… right now?"

"Yes."

Daehyun stared for a long moment.

Then something unexpected happened.

His expression slowly softened.

A quiet, disbelieving smile spread across his face.

"…that's kind of amazing."

Months of Waiting

The pregnancy changed the rhythm of their life in subtle ways.

Sooah continued working, though her schedule became slightly less brutal as her father insisted she take better care of herself.

Executives at Hanseong noticed the change immediately.

Meetings ended earlier.

Travel was reduced.

And when rumors quietly spread through the company that the heir to Hanseong Holdings was expecting a child, the reaction across the corporate world was immediate.

The next generation of the Kang and Han families was coming.

Inside the Kang residence, the changes were far more personal.

Daehyun developed a new daily habit.

He talked to the baby.

Often.

Very seriously.

Conversations with Someone Very Small

One afternoon Sooah walked into the living room and found Daehyun kneeling beside the couch.

His head rested gently against her stomach.

"…and if you're a boy," he was saying quietly, "I'll teach you how to beat level twenty-seven without dying."

Sooah blinked.

"What are you doing?"

He looked up.

"Talking to the baby."

"The baby cannot understand video game strategy."

"It's never too early to start learning."

She sighed softly but sat beside him anyway.

He rested his head against her stomach again.

"Did it kick yet?"

"Not yet."

"I'm waiting."

"You might be waiting a while."

"That's okay."

The Day Arrives

Nine months passed faster than either of them expected.

And then, one quiet autumn night, everything changed.

The hospital room was calm but busy.

Doctors moved carefully around the bed while nurses checked equipment and monitors.

Daehyun stood nearby looking completely terrified.

"I don't like this," he muttered.

Sooah, despite the obvious discomfort she was enduring, managed a faint smile.

"You're not the one giving birth."

"That's why I don't like it."

"You'll survive."

"I'm not sure."

The doctor glanced at him briefly.

"You may want to sit down, sir."

"…why?"

"In case you faint."

"I don't faint."

Five minutes later, Daehyun nearly fainted.

The Cry

Then, suddenly—

A cry filled the room.

Small.

Sharp.

Alive.

The nurse carefully wrapped the tiny newborn in a soft blanket before bringing him toward Sooah.

"Congratulations."

Sooah looked down at the small face.

Her expression softened in a way Daehyun had never seen before.

"…he's perfect."

Daehyun leaned closer.

The baby's eyes were still closed.

His tiny hand curled slightly in the blanket.

"…he's really small."

"That's normal."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

Daehyun stared in amazement.

"That's our son?"

"Yes."

He carefully reached out and touched the baby's hand.

The tiny fingers closed around his finger instinctively.

And in that quiet moment, something inside Daehyun shifted in a way he could not fully explain.

His voice became softer.

Almost reverent.

"…hi."

Kang Minjun

They named him Kang Minjun.

The first grandson of both families.

The child who carried the bloodlines of two corporate empires.

But inside the hospital room that night, none of that mattered.

Because as Sooah held their son for the first time and Daehyun sat beside her staring at the tiny face with quiet wonder, the world outside faded into the background.

Boardrooms.

Shareholders.

Corporate strategies.

All of it could wait.

For the first time in his life, Kang Daehyun felt a kind of happiness so simple it almost felt fragile.

His family was complete.

And for once, the vast weight of the world beyond their home did not seem important at all.
