Chapter 11 - A Name She Could Not Remember

Hospitals have a peculiar stillness at night.

It is not the silence of peace, nor the quiet of sleep. Rather, it is the muted calm of vigilance—machines whispering in steady rhythms, footsteps softened by polished floors, and pale light stretching down corridors that never truly grow dark.

Outside, the city of Seoul continued its endless movement. Traffic lights changed colors. Late-night taxis carried tired passengers home. Neon signs flickered in the distance.

But inside the hospital room where Han Sooah lay, time seemed to slow to an unbearable crawl.

The Waiting

Kang Daehyun had not moved from the chair beside the bed for hours.

At first there had been chaos.

Doctors rushing in.

Nurses adjusting monitors.

Questions asked quickly, voices calm but urgent.

The moment Sooah collapsed again, the executives at Hanseong Holdings had immediately arranged the best medical team available. Specialists were summoned. Tests began.

But now everything had paused.

The machines beside her bed hummed softly, their screens glowing faintly in the dim room.

Daehyun sat hunched forward, elbows on his knees, fingers clasped tightly together.

Minjun slept against his chest, curled into the warmth of his father's coat, completely unaware of the fear surrounding him.

The baby had cried earlier when they first arrived at the hospital.

But exhaustion had finally claimed him.

Now he slept peacefully.

Daehyun envied that innocence.

The Fear He Wouldn't Name

The doctor's earlier words echoed endlessly in his mind.

"We need to conduct more neurological tests."

Neurological.

The word lingered like a shadow.

He had asked what that meant.

The doctor had only given a careful answer.

"It's too early to draw conclusions."

Too early.

Which meant something might exist to conclude.

Daehyun hated uncertainty.

His entire life he had drifted through comfort, never forced to face anything truly frightening.

But tonight something unfamiliar pressed against his chest.

A quiet dread that refused to leave.

He leaned closer to Sooah's bed.

Her face looked pale against the white pillow.

Strands of dark hair spilled softly across the sheets.

She looked peaceful.

Too peaceful.

"Wake up already," he murmured softly.

Minjun stirred slightly but did not wake.

"You scared everyone."

His voice carried the faintest tremor.

The Moment

It happened slowly.

Almost imperceptibly.

Sooah's fingers moved first.

A small twitch beneath the hospital blanket.

Daehyun froze.

Then her eyelashes fluttered.

For a moment he simply stared, unable to believe what he was seeing.

Then he shot to his feet.

"Sooah?"

Her eyes opened gradually.

Dark.

Unfocused.

She blinked several times, as though adjusting to the bright hospital lights.

Daehyun leaned closer, relief flooding through him so suddenly his knees nearly buckled.

"You're awake."

Minjun stirred again at the sound of his voice.

Sooah's gaze shifted slowly toward him.

Her expression was calm.

Quiet.

But something in her eyes felt strangely distant.

The First Question

Her voice came out soft and hoarse.

"…Where am I?"

Daehyun laughed weakly.

"Hospital."

He brushed a hand gently through her hair.

"You fainted again. You scared the hell out of everyone."

She frowned slightly.

Her eyes drifted across the unfamiliar room.

Then back to him.

"Hospital…?"

"Yes."

He smiled, trying to lighten the moment.

"You overworked yourself again. The doctors are probably going to scold you."

But she wasn't smiling.

Instead, she looked at him with quiet confusion.

Then she spoke the words that slowly unraveled his world.

"Who are you?"

The Joke That Wasn't Funny

Daehyun blinked.

For a moment he thought he had misheard.

"What?"

Her expression remained uncertain.

"I asked… who are you?"

He stared at her.

Then laughed softly.

"Very funny."

She didn't react.

He gestured toward himself dramatically.

"Your husband."

Still no reaction.

"…Kang Daehyun."

Nothing.

The silence stretched uncomfortably.

Then she looked at the small child sleeping in his arms.

"And the baby?"

Daehyun shifted Minjun slightly.

"This little troublemaker?"

He smiled proudly.

"Our son."

Sooah's eyebrows drew together faintly.

"…My son?"

The smile on Daehyun's face began to fade.

The Slow Realization

For a moment he continued playing along.

"You're really committing to this prank, huh?"

He chuckled nervously.

"Okay, okay. I'll admit it's pretty convincing."

She looked genuinely confused now.

"What prank?"

Something cold slipped into his chest.

He stepped closer.

"Sooah."

Her eyes followed him carefully.

"Yes?"

"You're joking, right?"

She shook her head slowly.

"I'm sorry… but I don't understand."

Her gaze returned to Minjun again.

The baby shifted in his sleep, small fingers gripping Daehyun's coat.

Sooah's expression softened slightly at the sight of him.

But there was no recognition.

Only gentle curiosity.

"Is he really my son?"

Reality Arrives

Daehyun's heart began pounding.

"No."

The word escaped before he could stop it.

"No, you're messing with me."

He laughed again, louder this time.

"Sooah, seriously. That's enough."

But she looked increasingly uncomfortable.

"I'm not trying to joke."

Her voice grew quieter.

"I just… don't remember you."

The room suddenly felt smaller.

The machines beside the bed beeped steadily, indifferent to the storm rising inside Daehyun's chest.

He stepped back slowly.

"No."

His voice dropped.

"No, that's not possible."

She watched him carefully.

Concern beginning to appear in her eyes.

"I'm sorry…"

But the apology only made the fear worse.

The Panic

Daehyun turned abruptly and pressed the emergency call button beside the bed.

Within seconds nurses rushed into the room.

"What happened?"

He pointed toward Sooah.

"She's pretending she doesn't know me."

The nurse frowned.

"Pretending?"

"Yes!"

His voice rose sharply.

"She says she doesn't remember me or our son."

The nurse's expression changed.

"Doctor," she called quietly toward the hallway.

More footsteps approached quickly.

A neurologist entered moments later.

He approached Sooah calmly.

"Mrs. Han, can you tell me your name?"

She nodded.

"Han Sooah."

"Good."

He continued asking questions.

"What year is it?"

She answered correctly.

"Do you know where you are?"

"Yes."

"Do you remember collapsing earlier today?"

She hesitated.

"…No."

The doctor exchanged a glance with the nurse.

Then he asked one final question.

"Do you remember Kang Daehyun?"

Sooah looked toward the man standing across the room.

Her expression apologetic.

"…No."

The Truth Begins

The doctor turned slowly toward Daehyun.

His voice remained professional, but his eyes carried a quiet seriousness.

"It appears she may be experiencing memory loss."

Daehyun stared at him.

"What kind of memory loss?"

"We'll need further tests to determine the extent."

"But she knows everything else!"

"Yes."

"Then why doesn't she know me?!"

The doctor paused carefully before answering.

"Sometimes memory loss can be selective."

Selective.

The word echoed through Daehyun's mind like a gunshot.

Across the room, Sooah watched him with quiet concern.

As if he were a stranger suffering in front of her.

Meanwhile Minjun began to wake in his arms, blinking sleepily at the unfamiliar hospital lights.

And in that moment—standing between the woman who no longer knew him and the child who depended on both of them—Kang Daehyun felt something break quietly inside his chest.

For the first time in his life, he realized that the happiness he had always assumed would last forever could disappear in a single moment.

And the most terrifying part was this:

The person he loved most in the world was looking directly at him—

as though she had never seen him before.
