Chapter 3 - Conditions

The library at Harvard University had a certain quiet that felt different from ordinary silence.

It was not simply the absence of sound. It was a kind of reverence, the accumulated weight of centuries of learning pressing softly into every wooden desk and polished floorboard. Generations of students had sat beneath the same tall windows, chasing ideas that would later reshape industries, governments, and economies.

For most students, the library was a sanctuary.

For Kang Daehyun, it was a place he had avoided with impressive dedication.

Until now.

The First Study Session

When Daehyun arrived at four o'clock the next afternoon, he was sweating.

Not because the walk had been particularly long, though at his size even moderate exercise left him winded.

He was sweating because he had never studied with someone like Han Sooah before.

Most of his group partners in previous classes had either ignored him entirely or reluctantly tolerated his presence while doing all the work themselves.

Sooah did neither.

She had arrived early.

When Daehyun entered the study room she was already seated at the table, several thick textbooks neatly stacked beside her laptop. Her hair was tied loosely behind her head, and her eyes moved quickly across a page of notes.

She looked up the moment he stepped inside.

"You're on time."

Daehyun blinked.

"…by accident."

"That still counts."

He sat down heavily in the chair across from her, the seat creaking slightly under his weight.

Then he pulled something out of his backpack.

A plastic bag.

Inside were three chocolate chip muffins.

Sooah raised an eyebrow.

"You brought snacks."

"I concentrate better when I'm eating."

"You're eating muffins."

"They're brain food."

She studied him quietly for a moment.

Then she simply nodded.

"Very well."

The Project Begins

Sooah opened her laptop and rotated it toward him.

The screen displayed a detailed outline of their corporate strategy project.

Their assignment was ambitious: creating a comprehensive expansion strategy for a multinational technology corporation entering Southeast Asian markets.

Most students had barely begun their research.

Sooah already had:

• market growth projections• political risk analyses• labor cost comparisons• infrastructure development forecasts

Daehyun stared at the screen.

"…did you do all this yesterday?"

"Yes."

He felt suddenly embarrassed.

The only thing he had accomplished yesterday was reaching level 73 in his online game.

Sooah noticed his silence.

"You don't need to understand everything immediately."

"That's good," he said weakly.

"Because I understand nothing."

She leaned forward slightly.

"Then we'll start with the basics."

An Unexpected Student

What surprised Sooah most was not that Daehyun lacked knowledge.

It was that he lacked discipline.

Because when she began explaining market expansion strategy, something unusual happened.

He understood quickly.

Very quickly.

Within minutes he was asking questions.

Not the shallow questions of someone trying to pretend they were paying attention.

But thoughtful ones.

Observations about consumer behavior.

Questions about supply chains.

Speculations about pricing structures.

Sooah paused mid-sentence.

"You've never studied this before?"

"No."

"Then how did you reach that conclusion about regional manufacturing costs?"

Daehyun shrugged.

"…it just seemed obvious."

She stared at him carefully.

Under the messy hair.

Under the oversized hoodie.

Under the soft, exhausted expression.

There was a mind that worked faster than most people in the room.

It simply had never been trained.

The Arrangement

Three hours passed surprisingly quickly.

By the end of the evening they had outlined the entire strategy framework for their project.

Sooah leaned back slightly in her chair.

"You're not as incompetent as you pretend."

Daehyun finished his second muffin.

"I'm very competent at eating."

"That wasn't what I meant."

She folded her hands on the table.

"Why don't you apply yourself?"

He hesitated.

Then he answered honestly.

"…because I don't need to."

Her gaze sharpened.

"You're the heir to KGI Group."

He nodded.

"My father built the company."

"So you feel no responsibility toward it?"

Daehyun shrugged again.

"I never asked for it."

The words were simple.

But Sooah heard something quiet behind them.

A kind of weariness.

She studied him for a long moment.

Then she made a decision.

A Strange Bargain

"Daehyun."

He looked up.

"Yes?"

She closed her notebook.

"I'm going to help you graduate from this university properly."

He blinked.

"…why?"

"Because you're wasting your potential."

He laughed nervously.

"That sounds like something professors say."

"It's also true."

He leaned back in his chair.

"And if I refuse?"

Sooah tilted her head thoughtfully.

"Then I suppose I'll simply complete the project alone."

He frowned.

"That doesn't seem fair."

"Life rarely is."

There was a brief pause.

Then she added something quietly.

"However…"

Daehyun waited.

"If you agree to work seriously on your studies…"

She looked slightly amused.

"I'll go on dates with you."

The Shock

For several seconds Daehyun simply stared at her.

"…what?"

"You heard me."

"You're bribing me with dates?"

"Yes."

"That's illegal."

"No, it's motivational."

He stared harder.

"You're serious?"

"Completely."

He laughed awkwardly.

"You realize I'm… like this?"

He gestured vaguely at his body.

The hoodie stretched across his stomach.

The round cheeks.

The constant presence of snack food.

"I'm aware."

"And you still want to date me?"

Sooah smiled calmly.

"I'm curious about you."

That answer somehow made the situation even more confusing.

Negotiation

Daehyun rubbed the back of his neck.

"So what exactly are the rules of this… arrangement?"

Sooah spoke like a lawyer outlining a contract.

"First, you attend every class."

He grimaced.

"Second, you complete your assignments."

He sighed.

"Third, you allow me to tutor you."

"That sounds dangerous."

"And in exchange…"

She tapped the table lightly.

"One date per week."

Daehyun raised an eyebrow.

"Only one?"

"You need time to study."

"That's cruel."

Her smile widened slightly.

"You're free to decline."

He thought about it.

A date with Han Sooah.

The most elegant girl in their program.

The one everyone whispered about.

The one who seemed entirely out of his league.

"…one date per week?"

"Yes."

"And if my grades improve?"

"Perhaps more."

He extended his hand across the table.

"…deal."

She shook it.

Her hand was warm.

The First Date

Three days later Daehyun found himself standing nervously outside a small restaurant near the Charles River.

He had spent nearly twenty minutes choosing a shirt.

Another ten minutes combing his hair.

Which for him was an unprecedented amount of effort.

When Sooah arrived, she noticed immediately.

"You dressed differently."

He tugged awkwardly at his collar.

"…is it bad?"

"No."

She smiled gently.

"It's nice."

They sat by the window.

Outside, the river reflected the warm glow of evening lights.

Inside, the restaurant buzzed softly with conversation.

Daehyun ordered far too much food.

Sooah expected nothing less.

Yet as the evening passed, something unexpected happened.

They talked.

Not about finance.

Not about business.

But about small things.

Childhood stories.

Favorite movies.

Music.

Daehyun spoke about his love of animation and games with surprising enthusiasm.

Sooah listened with genuine interest.

At one point she laughed so suddenly she had to cover her mouth.

"You're ridiculous."

"I get that a lot."

Something Changes

Over the following weeks their routine settled naturally.

Study sessions.

Project meetings.

Dates.

Daehyun attended class more regularly.

He still brought snacks.

But he also began taking notes.

Actual notes.

Sooah corrected his assignments.

Explained difficult concepts.

Forced him to rewrite essays.

And every Friday evening—

They went somewhere together.

Coffee shops.

Bookstores.

Quiet restaurants.

Walks along the river.

Somewhere between studying and laughter, something gentle began forming between them.

Neither of them said it aloud.

But it was there.

In the way Sooah waited for him after class.

In the way Daehyun began looking forward to the library.

In the quiet comfort of sitting beside each other for hours.

The Presentation

Two months later their project presentation arrived.

The lecture hall was packed.

Groups took turns presenting complex market strategies.

When Sooah and Daehyun's turn came, several students expected the elegant Sooah to carry the entire presentation.

Instead something surprising happened.

Daehyun spoke.

Confidently.

Clearly.

Explaining their financial projections with calm precision.

Even the professor looked impressed.

When the presentation ended, the room was quiet for a moment.

Then the professor nodded slowly.

"Exceptional work."

Sooah glanced at Daehyun.

He looked stunned.

"…did we win?"

She laughed softly.

"Yes."

"We won."

And for the first time since arriving at Harvard, Kang Daehyun felt something unusual.

Pride.
