Chapter 7: Rooftop Confessions and Hidden Scars

The club fair wound down as the sun dipped behind the Tokyo skyline, turning the school courtyard into a sea of lengthening shadows and scattered paper lanterns. Laughter still echoed from the last stragglers packing up booths, but the energy had softened into something quieter, more intimate. Zain walked with the girls toward the main gate, trays long discarded, stomachs full of takoyaki and memories of the day's chaos.

Sawako stayed closest, her steps small and careful beside his. Every few seconds she glanced up at him, as though reassuring herself he hadn't vanished again. Hori and Taiga flanked them like reluctant bodyguards—Hori with her usual sharp awareness, Taiga with crossed arms and occasional side-eyes. Chika bounced ahead, already planning tomorrow's council meeting agenda out loud, while Kaguya walked with perfect posture, silver hair catching the dying light. Yotsuba skipped circles around the group, humming the tune from their impromptu stage performance.

Zain felt the weight of the day settling in his bones—not exhaustion exactly, but the strange thrill of balancing two worlds. The spiral anomaly was gone, another level-up locked in, new resistance skills humming under his skin. Yet every time he looked at Sawako's gentle profile or caught Hori's knowing smirk, the secret felt heavier.

They're starting to notice the disappearances. Can't keep pulling the "forgot my phone" excuse forever. But telling them? No. Not yet. Not until I'm strong enough that nothing can touch them.

At the school gates, the group slowed. Most students had already left; the campus felt almost empty now, peaceful in the golden hour.

Chika spun on her heel. "Okay! Group photo before we split! Everyone squeeze in!"

She produced her phone like magic, waving them together. Zain found himself in the center—Sawako pressed to his left, her shoulder warm against his arm; Hori on his right, hip bumping his in casual claim; Taiga grudgingly stepping in front, arms still crossed but not pulling away; Yotsuba jumping onto his back with a gleeful "Piggyback pose!"; Chika angling the camera from the front while Kaguya stood slightly apart, elegant even in a candid shot.

"Say oppai!" Chika chirped.

Zain nearly choked. Sawako squeaked and buried her face in his sleeve. Taiga elbowed him hard in the ribs. Hori snorted. Kaguya's lips twitched in the faintest amusement.

The shutter clicked.

Chika checked the photo and squealed. "Perfect! Sending to the group chat right now—wait, we don't have a group chat yet! New mission: make one tonight!"

As the others laughed and started exchanging LINE IDs, Sawako tugged Zain's sleeve gently.

"Um… Zain-kun? Could we… talk for a minute? Just us?"

His heart skipped. Affection at 92%. This is it. Confession flag?

"Sure. Lead the way, Sawako-chan."

They drifted away from the group toward the side path that led to the small rooftop garden behind the gym—one of the quieter spots on campus. The others waved them off with knowing looks; even Taiga muttered something about "not taking too long, idiot."

The rooftop garden was empty, bathed in the last amber light. Potted flowers lined the edges, cherry blossoms still clinging to a few branches overhead. Sawako stopped near the railing, fingers twisting together.

Zain leaned against the rail beside her, giving her space but staying close. "What's on your mind?"

She took a deep breath, then met his eyes—timid, but determined.

"You've been… disappearing. Twice today. And both times you came back looking like you'd fought something. Your jacket was different the first time. And just now… you were breathing hard again, even though you said it was just your phone."

Zain's stomach dropped. She's more observant than I thought. Of course she is. She's Sawako.

He opened his mouth to deflect, but the words stuck. Her gaze was too earnest, too trusting. Lying to her felt wrong in a way lying to monsters never would.

Sawako continued, voice soft. "I don't want to pry. But… I worry. You're always smiling, always helping everyone, but sometimes your eyes look… far away. Like you're carrying something heavy alone."

She stepped closer. Her hand hesitated, then gently touched the sleeve where the tear had been earlier.

"I just want you to know… you don't have to carry it by yourself. Not with me."

The words hit harder than any kagune or spiral. Zain's throat tightened. For once, the perverted inner monologue went silent. All that remained was the boy from Kot Addu who had died under a truck, and the boy reborn here who suddenly realized he didn't want to be alone with his secrets anymore.

He covered her hand with his own.

"Sawako… thank you. Really. I'm not used to people noticing when I'm off. Back home—back in Pakistan—I was always the loud one, the joker. No one looked deeper."

He exhaled slowly.

"I can't tell you everything yet. Not because I don't trust you, but because… some things are dangerous. And I don't want any of that touching you. Or Hori, or Taiga, or anyone else."

Sawako's eyes widened slightly, but she didn't pull away.

"Are you… in trouble?"

"Not the normal kind." He gave a small, crooked smile. "But I'm handling it. And getting stronger so I can keep handling it. So I can keep everyone safe. Especially you."

Her cheeks flushed deeper, but she didn't look away.

"Then… promise me something?"

"Anything."

"When it gets too heavy… come find me. Even if you can't explain. Just… let me stay with you. Like this."

She leaned forward and rested her forehead gently against his chest. The gesture was so simple, so trusting, that Zain's arms moved on instinct—wrapping around her in a careful, protective hug.

Her heartbeat thumped against his ribs. Warm. Alive. Real.

They stood like that for long minutes as the sky darkened to deep indigo. No words. Just breathing together.

When they finally pulled apart, Sawako's eyes were shining. She smiled—small, radiant, the kind of smile that made every monster fight worth it.

"Let's go back. They'll think we ran away together."

Zain laughed softly. "Wouldn't be the worst thing."

They walked down hand-in-hand, fingers laced. The group waited at the gate, Chika waving her phone with the new group chat already buzzing.

As they rejoined the others, Zain glanced upward one last time.

The crimson edge on the horizon had thickened—just a little.

But tonight, with Sawako's hand warm in his and the laughter of the others around him, it didn't feel quite so threatening.

He squeezed her fingers.

Bring it, whatever's coming. I've got something worth protecting now.

The first stars appeared overhead. The eclipse waited in silence.
