Chapter 10: Afternoon Shadows and the First Crack

The afternoon bell rang like a distant warning. Sunlight slanted through the classroom windows in long golden bars, but Zain felt the chill before he saw it—the crimson crescent now visible even in daylight if you knew exactly where to look. It hung low on the northern horizon like a wound in the sky, edges frayed and pulsing faintly. No one else reacted. Students packed bags, chattered about after-school plans, complained about homework. Normal life continued its cheerful rhythm while something ancient and wrong watched from above.

Zain zipped his bag slowly, buying time. Sawako waited at his desk, bag already over her shoulder, smiling that small, trusting smile that made his chest ache every time.

"Ready?" she asked softly.

"Yeah. Let's get out of here."

They walked out together, hands brushing but not quite linking—not yet, not in front of the entire hallway. The group chat had already summoned them: Hori demanded a strategy meeting for tomorrow's club sign-up deadline, Chika insisted on karaoke after school, Taiga grumbled that she had cram school but might show up late, Yotsuba sent seventeen cat emojis in a row.

Outside the gates the air felt heavier. Cherry blossoms still fell, but they seemed to drift slower, as though gravity itself was hesitating.

Hori caught up first, ponytail swinging. "You two are disgustingly cute today. It's almost offensive."

Sawako blushed instantly. Zain just grinned. "Jealous, Hori-san?"

"In your dreams, transfer boy."

Taiga appeared next, scowling at her phone. "Karaoke? Really? I have math drills."

Chika materialized from nowhere, arms wide. "Math can wait! Friendship cannot! We need to celebrate the new couple~"

Kaguya joined them at a dignified pace, silver hair catching the light. "I suppose one hour of frivolous singing won't destroy my academic record."

Yotsuba bounded up last, nearly tackling Zain in a hug. "Karaoke! I get to pick the first song!"

The group headed toward the nearby karaoke box—a colorful, neon-lit building two blocks from school. Zain kept one eye on the sky the whole way. The crimson crescent hadn't moved, but its presence pressed against his temples like distant thunder.

Inside the private room the mood lifted instantly. Chika claimed the remote and queued up idol songs. Lights dimmed to soft purples and blues. The screen flashed lyrics in cheerful kanji.

Sawako sat beside Zain on the couch, close enough that their thighs touched. She clutched the tambourine nervously, but her smile was bright.

"You sing first?" she asked.

"Only if you duet with me."

Her eyes widened, then softened. "Okay."

They picked a gentle ballad—an old romance anime ending theme. Zain's voice carried the melody steady and warm; Sawako's came in soft and clear, harmonizing perfectly on the chorus. Their eyes locked halfway through. The room went quiet except for their voices and the gentle backing track.

When the song ended, Chika wiped fake tears. "That was so pure I'm going to combust."

Hori smirked. "You two are dangerous together."

Taiga muttered, "Tch. Not bad."

Yotsuba clapped wildly. Kaguya gave a single, elegant nod of approval.

Zain felt the warmth of the moment settle deep—real, solid, worth every monster he'd fought so far.

Then the system pinged. Sharp. Urgent.

Zain's smile didn't falter. He set the mic down casually.

"Hey, I need to run to the convenience store real quick. Forgot to grab drinks for everyone. Be right back—order my usual cola, okay?"

Sawako tilted her head. "Again?"

Hori's eyes narrowed slightly. "You've been disappearing a lot lately."

Zain flashed his most charming grin, CHA stat flaring. "Promise—five minutes tops. Save me a turn on the mic."

He slipped out before anyone could press further.

The moment the karaoke door closed behind him he broke into a jog, activating Stealth Mode. Streets blurred past—normal people shopping, kids laughing, life untouched by the shadow overhead.

The abandoned lot was tucked behind a shuttered konbini, overgrown with weeds and littered with rusted vending machines. Three figures waited in the center.

Not ghouls. Not spirals.

Three low-level parasites—thin, pale humanoids with segmented limbs and twitching antennae, straight out of Parasyte. Their heads split open as he approached, revealing rows of razor teeth and probing tendrils.

They sensed him instantly. One lunged.

Zain sidestepped, grabbed a broken metal pole from the ground, and drove it through the first parasite's chest in a single fluid motion. Black ichor sprayed. The creature shrieked, tendrils flailing.

The second leaped from the side. Zain spun, using the momentum to slam it into a vending machine. Glass shattered. The third tried to flank him—too slow. He kicked its knee out, then brought the pole down like an executioner's axe.

Three bodies hit the ground in under thirty seconds.

Zain stood over the dissolving corpses, breathing hard but steady. The ichor evaporated into black mist, leaving no trace. He wiped the pole clean on a rag from his inventory and tossed it into the weeds.

Back at the karaoke box he slipped in quietly, face flushed but composed.

"Got the drinks," he announced, holding up a bag of colas he'd actually bought on the way back.

Sawako looked up, relief flickering in her eyes. "You're okay?"

"Never better." He slid onto the couch beside her, handing her a can. Their fingers brushed. She smiled—small, knowing, trusting.

The others launched into the next song. Laughter filled the room again.

Zain leaned close to Sawako's ear, voice low enough for only her to hear.

"Thanks for waiting."

She squeezed his hand under the table.

"Always."

Outside, the crimson crescent had grown another fraction. The sky above Tokyo remained blue for now.

But the first real crack had appeared in the facade.

And Zain knew—deep in his bones—that the easy days were ending faster than anyone realized.
