Chapter 5 - Quests Crystals and Steel

The last chime of the academy bell echoed through the halls of Elysium Academy, signaling the end of the day's lectures. Kai slung his satchel over his shoulder, the weight of it light compared to the anticipation thrumming through his chest. While the others headed to the dining hall or training grounds in groups, he lingered, walking through the quiet corridors, unnoticed.

The system appeared suddenly, as always, without sound or announcement.

"New Quests Available: 7"

Kai froze, momentarily startled by the robotic voice in his mind. His heart raced. Seven quests… all at once?

"View Quests?"

He blinked. A translucent menu materialized in front of his eyes, displaying icons he could interact with mentally. Each quest glowed faintly with a different hue.

Forest Patrol – Investigate disturbances near the East Wood. Reward: 15 XP / 5 Reward Points

Beast Hunt – Eliminate a small pack of Frostfang Wolves. Reward: 25 XP / 10 Reward Points

Crystal Recovery – Retrieve lost beast crystals in the Northern Glade. Reward: 30 XP / 12 Reward Points

Weapon Mastery – Train sword techniques in a duel simulation. Reward: +2 Physical Strength / 5 Reward Points

Stealth Observation – Track a high-tier forest predator without engagement. Reward: 20 XP / 8 Reward Points

Arena Challenge – Face three intermediate beasts simultaneously in a controlled environment. Reward: 40 XP / 15 Reward Points

Mystery Quest – Unknown. Accepting may lead to transformation-related bonuses.

Kai's pulse quickened. The system had never presented this many quests simultaneously. He tilted his head, reading each description carefully. Some were straightforward, simple hunting tasks. Others hinted at greater risks and rewards.

"Accept all?" the system prompted.

Kai hesitated, then nodded inwardly. He didn't want to waste any opportunities. Each point, each crystal, each battle… all of it mattered.

"Quests accepted. Objectives active," the system confirmed.

By the time Kai left the academy grounds, the forest stretched before him in muted shades of green and gold, the evening sun filtering through dense canopies. Most students hunted in groups today, but as usual, Kai preferred solitude. He melted into the underbrush, senses alert, feeling the faint warmth of the previous crystal still lingering inside him.

Kai crouched, studying a pair of Frostfang Wolves, their fur frosted along the tips and eyes glowing faintly in the dim light. The pack was small, but coordinated. He could sense the energy pulsating in each of them.

"Tier: Low-Intermediate. Weak points: Neck, underbelly. Caution advised."

Kai's hand brushed the hilt of his sword, worn but finely balanced, and a grin tugged at his lips. The system hadn't guided him explicitly on combat this time. He would have to rely on his own instincts.

The first wolf lunged.

He sidestepped fluidly, feeling the surge of energy from the previous crystal sharpen his reflexes. His blade traced a clean arc, striking the wolf's shoulder. The beast yelped and stumbled back, leaving a trail of frost from its fur.

Another wolf attacked from the left. Kai rolled under its jaws, slashing upward to nick its hind leg. It cried out but remained mobile.

For the next several minutes, Kai danced through the pack, moving with a fluid rhythm, striking, dodging, weaving. Every time a wolf fell, he noted the faint glow forming at the tips of their limbs—their crystals forming naturally as their bodies went limp.

He didn't collect them yet. His system didn't need him to act hastily. It prompted him only when he touched a crystal, ensuring the energy transfer was intentional.

Finally, the last wolf went down, struggling briefly before collapsing entirely. Kai knelt, carefully retrieving the largest crystal from its chest.

Beast Crystal Detected

Absorb Crystal?

Kai inhaled slowly. He felt the warmth within, the faint, electric pulse. He closed his eyes, accepted the system's prompt, and the crystal dissolved into tiny motes of light, flowing into his hand, into his body.

+10 Reward Points

+15 XP

Minor Strength & Reflex Boost

He exhaled sharply, feeling the subtle surge across his limbs. No one else would notice. He slid the hilt of his sword into place and wiped the sweat from his brow. Another victory. Another step closer to… something.

Later, as the shadows lengthened and the forest cooled, Kai trained with his sword. He practiced flowing strikes, defensive maneuvers, and feints, letting the system subtly guide him without revealing its full intent.

"Quest Objective: Weapon Mastery. Suggested target: simulate high-tier combat."

Kai smirked. Perfect. He visualized a sequence, attacking invisible foes with fluid precision. Each strike felt heavier, sharper, more precise. By the time he paused, his arms ached pleasantly, and a small confirmation appeared:

+2 Physical Strength

+5 Reward Points

Satisfied, he sheathed his sword. His body moved with more confidence now, the lingering energy of the crystals combining with his training to make him faster, more responsive.

The next morning in class, Kai's system startled him again. A flood of quests appeared, overlaying his lesson in Beast Biology and Energy Flow. Scrolls of information about elemental attributes, beast hierarchies, and combat strategies glimmered briefly in front of him.

Kai barely moved, subtly interacting with the system while the Knight Master spoke about the resilience of intermediate beasts. Some students glanced at him curiously as he scribbled notes, but he remained inconspicuous.

One quest caught his attention:

Mystery Quest — Forest East Glade: Unknown Reward.

Requirements: Hunt and retrieve all beast crystals from a small pack of elemental creatures.

Reward: Transformation Bonus Points, High XP, Possible New Skill Unlock.

Kai's pulse quickened. The forest would wait for no one, and this quest demanded careful planning.

Later that day, after lessons ended, Kai slipped into the East Glade. The system quietly guided him. A pack of elemental foxes emerged, their fur shimmering with faint glows of fire, ice, and lightning. He could see their auras, faintly pulsing in rainbow patterns.

He moved carefully, focusing on one at a time, letting the system suggest subtle tactics without giving away the outcome. The first fox lunged; he sidestepped, slicing cleanly along its flank. The second attempted to flank, and Kai's reflexes—enhanced slightly by previous crystal energy—allowed him to parry, then counterstrike, severing a vital joint.

Each beast fell, leaving crystals behind. He collected them carefully, letting the system ask him to absorb each one individually. Each transfer was private, invisible to the outside world, leaving him a subtle increase in reflexes, strength, and energy reserves.

+20 XP

+12 Reward Points

By nightfall, Kai had gathered every single crystal from the elemental pack. He paused, letting the system confirm the total reward:

Total XP: 50

Total Reward Points: 27

Kai exhaled, shoulders tense with exertion. He looked at the stars breaking through the canopy and allowed a small smile. No one here knew the extent of his growth, nor would they. That was for him alone.

As the evening settled, he retreated to a small clearing near a stream. The system appeared again.

"Transformation Progress: Hybrid Vision Eyes active. Next evolution tier available after 100 Reward Points. Current points: 45/100."

Kai's eyes widened slightly. Only a hint of the future lay before him. He didn't know what the next stage would look like, but he could feel a faint anticipation buzzing inside him.

He cleaned his sword, tucked away the remaining crystals in his Inventory Menu, and allowed the forest to settle around him. Hunting alone wasn't lonely—it was a practice of patience, observation, and preparation. Every quest, every crystal, every strike brought him closer to something larger, something only he would understand when the time came.

For now, he was silent. He was patient. He was preparing.
