Chapter 8 - Quiet Efficiency

Morning drills at Elysium Academy always began before the sun fully rose.

Cold air rolled across the training grounds while students gathered in long lines across the packed dirt arena. Instructors moved between the rows with sharp eyes, correcting posture and stance.

Kai stood among them, sword in hand.

Across the field, Instructor Halvern placed several wooden targets around the yard. But today there were no stationary dummies.

Instead, the students themselves formed circles.

Halvern's voice carried across the yard.

"Today's lesson is combat rotation."

A few students groaned quietly.

Halvern ignored them.

"You will rotate opponents every minute. No brute force. Focus on timing, positioning, and reading your opponent."

Marcus grinned.

"Finally."

Aiden stretched lazily beside him.

"This is where I demonstrate my legendary defensive strategy."

Victor glanced at him.

"You mean running?"

Aiden nodded seriously.

"Exactly."

A few students laughed.

Halvern raised his hand.

"Positions."

The class formed two lines.

Kai stepped forward into the circle.

Across from him stood a tall student holding a practice blade. The young man looked confident, though his grip was slightly too tight.

Halvern lowered his hand.

"Begin."

The student attacked immediately.

His sword cut down toward Kai's shoulder.

Kai activated Hybrid Vision Eyes.

Nothing visible happened outwardly.

But his vision shifted.

Faint movement lines traced through the student's arms and shoulders. Muscle tension revealed the path of the strike before it fully formed.

Kai stepped sideways.

The blade passed through empty air.

Kai tapped the student's side lightly with his wooden sword.

"Point."

The student blinked.

"What—?"

Halvern called out.

"Rotate!"

The next opponent stepped forward.

This one attacked cautiously.

Two quick strikes.

Kai blocked both.

A third strike came low.

Kai shifted his stance and redirected the blade away before tapping the opponent's wrist.

"Point."

"Rotate!"

Opponent after opponent stepped forward.

Kai never rushed.

Never overpowered anyone.

He simply watched.

Read movements.

Moved efficiently.

Marcus crushed three opponents in a row using brute strength.

Aiden lost immediately twice, then somehow managed to win one round by accidentally tripping someone.

"Skill," he announced proudly.

Victor shook his head.

After ten rotations Halvern raised his hand.

"Stop."

Students stepped back.

Halvern walked slowly through the group, observing.

Then he stopped briefly near Kai.

"Efficient movement," the instructor said.

Kai nodded quietly.

Halvern continued walking.

No praise. No criticism.

Just observation.

Which was fine.

Kai preferred it that way.

Later that morning the students gathered inside a lecture hall for Beast Behavior Analysis.

Instructor Merith stood at the front of the room beside a large illustrated chart.

"Today we discuss territorial movement patterns."

She pointed to several lines drawn across a forest map.

"Beasts rarely move randomly. Most follow predictable territory routes."

Kai wrote notes carefully.

Then the system appeared.

Movement Analysis

Objective:

Correctly predict the path of three different beast territories based on classroom data.

Reward:

+6 Reward Points

Kai glanced at the map again.

The instructor asked the class a question.

"Based on the terrain, where would a mid-tier predator likely establish its central hunting zone?"

Several students raised their hands.

Marcus pointed toward the river area.

Victor chose the high ground.

Kai studied the lines quietly.

Then he answered.

"The valley ridge," he said calmly.

Merith looked at him.

"Explain."

Kai gestured slightly toward the map.

"Water access, natural cover, and elevation. A predator could watch the valley and intercept prey traveling along the river."

Merith nodded.

"Correct."

The system updated immediately.

The lesson continued.

Kai answered two more questions later in the class.

Each time the system quietly updated.

Kai kept writing in his notebook like nothing had happened.

No one noticed.

By late afternoon the academy issued a small assignment.

A group of students would travel into the outer forest to observe unusual beast movement reported by scouts.

Not hunt.

Observe.

Kai joined the group along with Marcus, Victor, Lena, Aiden, and several others.

Instructor Halvern accompanied them.

The group walked quietly beneath the tall forest canopy.

Leaves rustled softly overhead.

Halvern raised a hand after several minutes.

"Stay alert. Reports say several predator species have shifted territory recently."

Victor frowned slightly.

"That's unusual."

"Exactly," Halvern said.

Kai activated Hybrid Vision Eyes again.

The forest revealed subtle trails of energy and footprints across the ground.

Multiple beasts had passed through this area recently.

More than normal.

Marcus knelt near a broken branch.

"Something big moved through here."

Lena studied the claw marks along a tree trunk.

"Not one creature," she said.

"Several."

Aiden looked around nervously.

"Cool cool cool. That's definitely comforting."

Halvern gestured forward.

"Slow advance."

The group moved deeper.

Kai's enhanced vision traced overlapping movement patterns.

Wolves.

Boars.

Something else.

Then he saw it.

Large footprints.

Much larger than the others.

Kai's eyes narrowed slightly.

But he said nothing.

Halvern eventually raised a hand again.

"Stop here."

They reached a wide clearing.

The ground was torn up.

Claw marks scarred the soil.

Several animal carcasses lay scattered around the area.

Victor crouched beside one.

"This wasn't normal hunting," he said quietly.

"Looks like something chased multiple species through here."

Marcus grinned slightly.

"Now that sounds interesting."

Halvern stood silently for a moment.

Then he spoke.

"We are not engaging whatever caused this."

Marcus sighed.

"Of course not."

"This is observation only."

Kai studied the clearing through Hybrid Vision Eyes.

Energy traces lingered in the air.

Something powerful had passed through recently.

But it was gone now.

The system appeared again.

New Quest Detected

Disturbance Investigation

Objective:

Identify the cause of abnormal predator migration.

Status: In Progress

Reward:

Unknown

Kai's eyes flickered slightly.

Unknown reward.

Interesting.

Halvern signaled the group to return.

The sun had already begun lowering toward the horizon.

They moved back toward the academy quietly.

Marcus stretched his arms.

"Next time we should actually fight something."

Aiden shook his head.

"I'm perfectly fine with not fighting mysterious giant predators."

Victor looked toward Kai briefly.

"You were quiet today."

Kai shrugged.

"Just observing."

Victor nodded once.

Then continued walking.

The academy gates eventually came into view.

Students dispersed toward their dormitories.

Kai paused briefly before heading inside.

His mind replayed the clearing again.

The claw marks.

The overlapping predator trails.

And the massive footprints.

Something new had entered the forest territory.

Something strong enough to scare multiple predator species into moving.

Kai didn't know what it was yet.

But the system clearly wanted him to find out.
