Chapter 6: The Gates of Memory
The escape from the Iron-Quarter was a blur of steam and shadow. With the Ink-Warden defeated, the local guards were in a state of chaos, but the "Purge" was still in effect. The atmosphere in the Undercity had changed; the grey "Sludge" in the gutters was starting to glow with a rhythmic, pulsing red light.
"The Reset Pulse," Lyra explained as they sprinted through a narrow alleyway lined with terrified citizens. "The Sect Leader is charging the Great Array in the Spire. In less than an hour, a wave of pure Aether will wash through the Undercity. It won't kill the people, but it will 'Wipe' their recent memories. It's how they keep the slaves obedient after a rebellion."
"And it will wipe the Ledger," Kaelen realized.
"It will do more than wipe it," Lyra said. "It will treat the Ledger as a virus. It will try to delete you along with it."
They reached the Shattered Aeon Gates, an ancient, rusted structure of obsidian and star-metal that predated the city of Orizon itself. It was a massive archway buried deep in the bedrock, covered in the same geometric symbols Kaelen saw in his visions.
Standing before the gate was a woman with hair as white as bone, wearing armor made of shimmering glass. She held a spear that hummed with the power of the wind.
"The Jade-Ink Saintess," Lyra whispered, skidding to a halt. "Wei Lan. She's Rank 5. We can't fight her, Kaelen. Not even with the Nexus-boost."
Wei Lan leveled her spear at Kaelen's throat. "The Scribe who broke a Warden," she said, her voice like chimes in the wind. "My father is merciful. He only wants the book. Step through the gate, and I will ensure your soul is preserved in a crystal lattice. You will live forever as a statue in our garden."
Kaelen looked at the ancient gate behind her. The Ledger was screaming now—not in pain, but in recognition.

Kaelen stepped forward, ignoring Lyra's warning. He looked the Saintess in the eye.
"I've already forgotten too much to become a statue," Kaelen said.
He didn't attack her. He turned his back on her and pressed his tattooed arm against the cold obsidian of the Shattered Aeon Gate.
Wei Lan lunged, her glass spear whistling through the air, aimed directly for his heart.
"Kaelen!" Lyra screamed.
As the tip of the spear touched Kaelen's back, the Ledger flared.

The gate didn't open. It inhaled.
A vacuum of pure Void-energy erupted from the archway, swallowing Kaelen, Lyra, and the Saintess's spear-thrust. For a split second, the red "Reset Pulse" of the city hit the area, but it bounced off the obsidian gate like a pebble against a shield.
Then, there was only darkness.

Kaelen opened his eyes. He wasn't in the Undercity anymore. He was standing on a floor of solid glass, suspended in a sea of stars. Floating all around him were millions of books—some burning, some frozen, some screaming.
"Welcome to the Library," a voice said.
Kaelen turned. Standing there was a version of himself—but older, with eyes that held the weight of a thousand civilizations.
"I'm the version of you that stayed," the figure said. "Now, do you want to know why they really deleted the Aeons?"
Kaelen looked at his arm. The silver chains were gone. The book was wide open.
"Yes," Kaelen said. "I'm ready to record."
