Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: The Saintess’s Blood

Chapter 8: The Saintess's Blood

Kaelen slammed back into reality. The cold obsidian of the Shattered Aeon Gate was at his back. The air was thick with the red, vibrating energy of the Reset Pulse, now only minutes away from full activation.

A few feet away, Wei Lan, the Jade-Ink Saintess, was struggling to stand. Her glass armor was cracked, and her white hair was matted with blood. The vacuum of the gate had nearly torn her soul apart.

"What... what did you do?" she gasped, coughing up emerald-tinged blood. She tried to raise her spear, but the wind-power within it was flickering, suppressed by the lingering Void-energy of the gate.

Kaelen walked toward her. His footsteps didn't make a sound. He didn't feel the heat of the burning furnaces nearby; he didn't feel the sweat on his own brow. He felt nothing but the cold logic of the Ledger.

"I saw the truth, Wei Lan," Kaelen said. "Your father isn't protecting order. He's preparing the harvest."

"Liar!" Wei Lan screamed. She lunged, a desperate, final thrust of her spear.

Kaelen didn't move his body to dodge. He simply reached out with his pale, cold hand and caught the tip of the glass spear.

[TECHNIQUE ACTIVATED: THE ARCHIVIST'S HAND]

[ANALYZING: GLASS-HEART SPEAR (RANK 5 ARTIFACT)]

"Edit: Density," Kaelen whispered.

The spear, made of the hardest spiritual glass in the empire, suddenly became as soft as wet clay. It wilted in Kaelen's grip, the tip drooping toward the floor.

Wei Lan froze, her eyes wide with terror. "You... you're a monster."

"No," Kaelen said, stepping closer. "I'm the Editor."

He placed his hand on her shoulder. The Ledger on his arm glowed with a terrifying, absolute blackness.

A face flickered in Kaelen's mind—a boy he used to play with in the slums. They had shared a piece of bread once. Now, that boy was gone. There was just a hole where a name used to be.

[RECORDING COMPLETE: MASTER-KEY STATUS ACQUIRED]

Kaelen pulled his hand back. Wei Lan collapsed, not dead, but "Locked." Her Aether was frozen within her veins, her body transformed into a living Archive that Kaelen could now use to command the city's systems.

"Lyra!" Kaelen shouted.

The Shadow-Stitcher crawled out from behind a fallen pillar, her face pale. "Kaelen? Your eyes... they're completely purple. There's no white left in them."

"There's no time for that," Kaelen said, his voice devoid of emotion. "The Reset Pulse is hitting its peak. I have the Master-Key. I can rewrite the Array."

He turned toward the sky. High above, the Great Spire of the Jade-Ink Sect was glowing like a second sun, a crimson orb of energy ready to wash over the millions of souls in the Undercity.

Kaelen raised both hands toward the Spire. The Ledger on his arm began to unspool, the black ink-veins leaping off his skin and weaving into a massive, holographic script that mirrored the city's own defensive array.

"Access Denied," Kaelen roared, his voice amplified by the Ledger until it shook the very foundations of Orizon.

[SYSTEM OVERRIDE: INITIATED]

[TARGET: THE RESET ARRAY]

[COMMAND: REDIRECT]

The crimson orb in the sky didn't explode. It imploded.

The energy that was meant to wipe the memories of the poor was suddenly sucked back into the Spire. The "Sludge" in the gutters turned from red to a brilliant, pure white.

"What are you doing?" Lyra asked, shielded her eyes from the glare.

"I'm not letting them have the harvest," Kaelen said. "I'm sending the energy back to the source."

A mile above them, the top of the Great Spire—the palace of the Sect Leader—erupted in a silent, blinding flash of white Aether. The leaders of the Jade-Ink Sect, who had spent decades hoarding power, were suddenly hit with the full force of their own "Reset."

They wouldn't die. But when they woke up, they wouldn't remember who they were. They wouldn't remember their techniques. They wouldn't even remember how to speak.

The hierarchy of Orizon had just been decapitated.

Kaelen fell to his knees. He looked at his hands. He knew they belonged to him, but he didn't know why they were stained with charcoal. He knew he was in a place called the Undercity, but he didn't remember ever living there.

He looked at Lyra. "Who... who are you?"

Lyra's eyes filled with tears. She knelt beside him, taking his cold, blue hand in hers. "I'm your Bookmark, Kaelen. I'm the one who's going to help you remember."

The Ledger on his arm settled. The first page was full.

Kaelen Voss, the man who had deleted his own past to save a city of strangers, looked up at the smoking ruins of the Great Spire. He didn't know his name, but he knew one thing.

The story was far from over.
