Elena couldn't explain why the hallway suddenly felt smaller.
Maybe it was the way Adrian Volkov was looking at her.
His gaze hadn't changed much since their academy days—steady, quiet, almost unreadable. But now that they stood face to face again after years apart, she realized something she hadn't noticed before.
Adrian didn't just look at people.
He observed them.
Carefully.
Like someone who missed nothing.
"You're staring," Elena said lightly, trying to ease the strange tension growing between them.
Adrian didn't look away.
"You've changed."
Elena blinked.
"That sounds like something people say when they don't know what else to say."
"It's not meant that way."
He pushed himself away from the window and took a slow step closer.
Elena suddenly became very aware of the quiet hallway around them.
Students still moved in the distance, but none were paying attention to their conversation.
"What do you mean then?" she asked.
Adrian studied her face thoughtfully.
"You used to look nervous when you played."
Elena tilted her head.
"And now?"
"Now you look like someone who knows the music belongs to her."
The compliment was unexpected.
Her cheeks warmed slightly.
"Well… I've had a few years to practice."
Adrian gave a small nod, as if he had expected that answer.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Elena found herself noticing details she hadn't seen before.
The sharp cut of his suit.
The faint scar near his wrist.
The calm authority in the way he carried himself.
The quiet boy from St. Aurelius Academy had grown into someone very different.
Someone powerful.
And yet…
When she looked into his eyes, she saw something familiar there.
Something unchanged.
"You're still observing people like you used to," she said suddenly.
Adrian's brow lifted slightly.
"I did that before?"
"You did it all the time."
Elena leaned lightly against the nearby wall.
"You barely spoke to anyone at school, but you noticed everything."
Adrian's expression remained calm.
"And you noticed that."
"Of course I did."
She paused, then added with a small smile,
"I used to watch you sometimes."
The words slipped out before she could stop them.
Adrian's gaze sharpened slightly.
"You watched me?"
Elena realized what she had just admitted and quickly looked away.
"Well… not in a strange way."
Adrian said nothing.
But the faintest hint of amusement appeared in his eyes.
"You were hard not to notice," she continued quickly. "Everyone talked about you."
"The rumors," he said flatly.
"Yes."
"Most of them weren't true."
Elena glanced back at him.
"I figured that out eventually."
A quiet moment passed between them.
Then Adrian said something unexpected.
"You were the only one who didn't look at me the same way."
Elena frowned slightly.
"What way?"
"Like I was something dangerous."
She shrugged softly.
"You didn't seem dangerous."
Adrian gave a short, quiet laugh.
"You were wrong."
The seriousness in his voice made her look at him more carefully.
For a brief second, she wondered what kind of world he had stepped into after leaving the academy.
But she decided not to ask.
Instead, she changed the subject.
"So… how long have you been in the city?"
"A few months."
"That's about the same time I arrived."
"I know."
Elena blinked.
"You know?"
Adrian didn't hesitate.
"I keep track of things that matter."
The words were simple.
But something about them made her heart skip.
Before she could respond, footsteps approached from the far end of the hallway.
Kai appeared a moment later, walking toward them with the relaxed confidence of someone who belonged wherever he stood.
He stopped beside Adrian and glanced at Elena curiously.
"So this is the famous Elena Rivera," he said casually.
Elena looked at Adrian in confusion.
"Famous?"
Kai grinned.
"Well… famous to him."
Adrian shot him a warning glance.
Kai raised his hands innocently.
"What? I didn't say anything wrong."
Elena crossed her arms.
"I feel like there's a conversation happening that I wasn't invited to."
Kai chuckled.
"I'm Kai, by the way."
"Elena."
"I know."
Of course he did.
Everyone around Adrian seemed to know more than they should.
Kai studied her for a moment before nodding slightly.
"I see why he remembered you."
Elena raised an eyebrow.
"That sounds mysterious."
Kai looked at Adrian again, amused.
"You never told her?"
Adrian's voice remained calm.
"There's nothing to tell."
Kai shook his head slightly.
"That's debatable."
Elena glanced between the two men.
"What exactly are we talking about?"
Kai opened his mouth to answer—
But Adrian cut him off smoothly.
"Kai has a habit of exaggerating."
Kai smirked.
"And you have a habit of pretending things don't matter."
Elena watched the exchange carefully.
The two clearly knew each other well.
"Are you two always like this?" she asked.
"Unfortunately," Adrian said.
Kai laughed.
But while the conversation continued, Elena noticed something else.
Every few seconds…
Adrian's eyes returned to her.
Quiet.
Observant.
Almost thoughtful.
And suddenly Elena understood something strange.
It wasn't just that Adrian remembered her.
It was the way he looked at her now.
Like someone who had carried a memory for years…
And had finally found it standing in front of him again.
