Chapter 1 - Married to a Stranger, Bound by a Secret

"The entire Ariston Global Empire… will be inherited by…"

The lawyer paused.

I remember thinking, Wow. Even billionaires die dramatically.

"…Miss Elena Carter."

For a full three seconds, I honestly believed there was another Elena Carter hiding somewhere behind me.

So I turned around.

Nope.

Just me.

Standing in a black borrowed dress that still had the price tag tucked awkwardly inside the sleeve.

Every person in the hall was staring at me.

Elena Carter.

That was my name.

Unfortunately.

Three days ago, I was delivering coffee to this exact building. I had nearly slipped on the polished marble floor because I was too busy staring at the giant golden logo on the wall.

Now I was standing under chandeliers that probably cost more than my entire life savings.

And apparently… I owned them.

"I'm sorry," I said carefully, raising my hand like I was in school. "Did you just say my name?"

The lawyer adjusted his glasses. "Yes, Miss Carter."

Miss Carter.

No one had ever said my name like that before. Usually it was "Coffee girl," or "Excuse me," or "You forgot the sugar."

Victoria Ariston stood up so abruptly her chair screeched against the marble floor.

"This is absurd," she snapped. "There must be a mistake."

She looked flawless, even furious. Her black dress hugged her perfectly. Diamonds glittered at her ears. If elegance had a face, it would look like her.

And right now, elegance was angry.

Beside her sat Ethan Ariston.

He didn't move.

He didn't shout.

He just looked at me.

Cold. Calm. Evaluating.

The kind of look that makes you check if you accidentally spilled something on yourself.

The lawyer cleared his throat again.

"There is no mistake. This is Mr. Alexander Ariston's final will and testament."

Final.

The word felt heavy.

I had met Alexander Ariston only twice.

The first time, I delivered his coffee.

The second time, he asked me to sit.

I thought he was lonely.

He had asked strange questions that day.

"Do you believe people can forgive betrayal?"

"Do you think pride destroys families?"

At the time, I thought he was just being philosophical.

Now I was starting to feel like I had accidentally auditioned for something.

"There is one condition," the lawyer continued.

My stomach dropped.

Conditions are never good.

"In order to inherit the Ariston Global Empire, Miss Elena Carter must legally marry Mr. Ethan Ariston within thirty days."

If shock had a sound, it would be the noise that filled that room.

Ethan finally stood.

"I refuse," he said calmly.

His voice was steady. Controlled. Powerful.

I crossed my arms.

"Well," I muttered, "that makes two of us."

A few people coughed to hide laughter.

Victoria's eyes snapped toward me.

"This girl is nobody," she said sharply. "She has no background. No status. She cannot enter this family."

That stung more than I expected.

Nobody.

I forced a small smile.

"For the record," I said, "I didn't exactly wake up this morning planning to marry into billionaire drama."

Ethan's eyes flicked toward me.

Just for a second.

And I could swear I saw the smallest hint of something there.

Not amusement.

But curiosity.

The lawyer pressed a button on the remote.

A large screen behind him flickered on.

Alexander Ariston appeared.

He looked weaker than I remembered. Pale. Tired.

But his eyes were still sharp.

"If you are watching this," he began, "then I am no longer there to explain this in person."

The room went silent again.

"Elena… you are my blood."

I stopped breathing.

My blood?

I felt my knees wobble slightly.

Victoria went completely still.

"Ethan… you are my pride."

Ethan's jaw tightened.

Then Alexander paused.

"But blood is not always truth."

The temperature in the room seemed to drop.

"I have carried a secret for twenty-two years," he continued.

Victoria stood abruptly.

"Turn it off."

The lawyer didn't move.

Alexander's voice softened.

"I forgave betrayal."

The word hit the room like a slap.

Betrayal.

Ethan slowly turned toward his mother.

"Mother," he said quietly, "what is he talking about?"

Victoria didn't answer.

She looked… afraid.

For the first time since I had seen her, she looked human.

Alexander continued.

"I chose love over pride. That is why this marriage must happen."

The screen went black.

And just like that, my life officially stopped making sense.

Blood.

Betrayal.

Marriage.

Empire.

I pressed my fingers to my forehead.

"Okay," I whispered under my breath, "I definitely delivered coffee to the wrong building."

No one laughed.

Tough crowd.

Then—

The elevator doors at the back of the hall opened with a soft ding.

Every head turned.

A tall man stepped out.

He walked slowly, confidently, like he belonged there.

His eyes locked on Victoria.

And he smiled.

"Did you miss me?"

Victoria's face drained of color so fast it was almost impressive.

Ethan stood straighter.

"Mother," he said carefully, "who is he?"

The man stopped a few feet away.

He studied Ethan for a long moment.

There was something strange in his expression.

Not anger.

Not hatred.

Something deeper.

"I think," he said calmly, "it's time you learned the truth."

I looked from him… to Victoria… to Ethan.

And suddenly, inheriting an empire didn't feel exciting.

It felt dangerous.

Because whatever truth was about to come out—

It had been buried for twenty-two years.

And somehow, I was standing in the center of it.

I used to worry about rent.

Now I was apparently someone's secret child.

Possibly someone else's mistake.

And definitely in the middle of a family war I didn't understand.

Ethan looked at me again.

This time there was no cold distance.

There was suspicion.

And a question.

Who are you?

Honestly?

I wasn't sure anymore.

But one thing was becoming very clear.

Marrying Ethan Ariston might not be the worst part.

The worst part would be surviving this family.

And as the mysterious man took another step forward…

I had a feeling my life was about to get a lot more complicated.
