Chapter 12 - A Glance That Lasts Too Long

Morning sunlight streamed through the tall windows of St. Aurelius Elite Academy, casting warm patterns across the polished marble floors. The quiet hum of students arriving for the day filled the hallways, accompanied by the occasional burst of laughter and the echo of footsteps.

Elena Rivera walked toward her classroom with her music notebook tucked against her chest.

The events of the previous afternoon had lingered in her mind far longer than she expected.

Adrian's warning.

The strange men outside the school gate.

And the way his voice had sounded-calm, but serious enough to make her take a different route home.

She still didn't understand what he had meant.

Or why it had felt so important.

Elena pushed the thoughts aside as she reached her classroom door. Classes had already begun to fill the room, students settling into their seats while conversations continued in low voices.

But something immediately caught her attention.

The seat beside the window was empty.

Adrian Volkov's seat.

It wasn't unusual for Adrian to arrive late. In fact, many teachers seemed to pretend not to notice when he entered the classroom halfway through a lecture.

Still, Elena found herself glancing toward the door without meaning to.

She quickly sat down and opened her notebook.

Focus on your music, she told herself.

That was the reason she was here.

Minutes passed.

The teacher began the morning lecture, writing notes across the board while students copied them quietly.

Just as Elena began to concentrate again, the classroom door opened.

The room fell noticeably quieter.

Adrian Volkov stepped inside.

His dark coat hung loosely over his shoulders, and his expression remained as unreadable as ever. Without speaking, he walked toward his seat by the window.

The teacher paused only briefly before continuing the lesson.

No questions.

No reprimands.

Adrian sat down calmly.

For a moment, his gaze moved across the room.

Then it stopped.

On Elena.

She froze.

It lasted only a second.

Maybe less.

But something about the way he looked at her felt different today.

Not distant.

Not curious.

Something closer to... concern.

Elena quickly looked down at her notebook, pretending to focus on the lecture.

Her heart beat slightly faster than it should have.

She tried to convince herself it was nothing.

Just a glance.

But for some reason, she could still feel it.

The class continued in quiet concentration, the sound of chalk against the board filling the room.

Elena forced herself to focus on writing notes.

Yet every few minutes, she felt the strange urge to look toward the window.

Toward Adrian.

Eventually, curiosity won.

She glanced up.

At the exact same moment, Adrian was already looking at her.

Their eyes met.

This time, neither of them looked away immediately.

The moment stretched longer than it should have.

The rest of the classroom seemed to disappear.

There was no sound.

No movement.

Just that silent connection hanging between them.

Elena felt warmth rise to her cheeks.

She quickly looked back down at her notebook, pretending to read something important.

But her mind had completely lost track of the lecture.

Across the room, Adrian leaned back slightly in his chair.

For the first time in days, his thoughts weren't focused on business meetings, family expectations, or the suspicious men watching the academy gates.

They were focused on the girl sitting three rows ahead of him.

The girl who played the piano like she was telling a story.

The girl who had unknowingly stepped into a world far more dangerous than she realized.

His gaze drifted briefly toward the classroom window.

Outside, the academy grounds looked peaceful.

Students walked across the courtyard.

Teachers passed between buildings.

Everything appeared normal.

But Adrian knew better.

The men from yesterday had disappeared far too quickly.

Which meant they hadn't been random observers.

They had been watching someone.

His eyes slowly returned to Elena.

And for the first time since noticing her, Adrian felt something unfamiliar settle in his chest.

Worry.

Not for himself.

For her.

Elena sensed his gaze again and hesitated before looking up.

Their eyes met once more.

This time, the moment lasted even longer.

Neither of them spoke.

Neither of them moved.

And yet something passed between them.

Something quiet.

Something fragile.

Something neither of them fully understood yet.

From the back of the classroom, another pair of eyes noticed the exchange.

Seraphina Orlov sat gracefully at her desk, her posture perfectly composed.

Her expression remained calm.

But her sharp gaze had followed every second of that silent moment.

The glance.

The hesitation.

The way neither of them had looked away.

Seraphina slowly closed her notebook.

A faint smile appeared on her lips.

But there was no warmth in it.

Because a glance that lasts too long...

was never just a glance.
