Chapter 18 -  Our Last Day

The last day at St. Aurelius Elite Academy arrived with a strange kind of silence.

Not the peaceful silence of early mornings or the quiet of empty hallways after class. This silence felt heavier—like the school itself knew something was ending.

The courtyard was full, yet it didn't feel as lively as usual. Students gathered in small groups beneath the tall trees, talking, laughing, taking pictures, and pretending that everything was normal.

But Elena Rivera could see it in their eyes.

Everyone knew this was goodbye.

She stood near the stone steps of the main building, holding the edge of her graduation robe nervously. The dark fabric felt heavier than she expected, like it carried the weight of the years she had spent here.

Four years.

Four years of early mornings, late nights practicing piano, and chasing a dream that still felt just out of reach.

Four years that had changed everything.

Especially the last one.

"Elena!"

She turned just in time to see Luca jogging toward her, slightly out of breath.

"You're hiding again," he said with a grin.

"I'm not hiding," she replied. "I just needed some air."

"Everyone says that on emotional days."

Elena gave him a small smile but didn't argue.

Across the courtyard, students were hugging, laughing too loudly, or wiping their eyes when they thought no one was looking. Even the teachers seemed softer today.

Everything felt fragile.

Like a moment that would disappear if she blinked.

"Did you play this morning?" Luca asked.

Elena nodded.

"In the music hall?"

"Where else?"

Luca chuckled.

"That piano is going to miss you."

Elena looked down at her hands.

The thought made her chest tighten.

That piano had been her sanctuary.

The place where she could breathe when everything else felt overwhelming.

The place where her dreams felt real.

And strangely enough…

The place where Adrian had first heard her.

She hadn't seen him all morning.

Not during the ceremony rehearsal.

Not during the morning announcements.

Not even in the courtyard now.

Her eyes scanned the crowd without meaning to.

But he wasn't there.

"Looking for someone?" Luca asked casually.

Elena immediately shook her head.

"No."

Luca raised an eyebrow but didn't push further.

Before he could say anything else, a voice echoed across the courtyard.

"Graduates, please gather near the stage!"

The crowd began to shift as students slowly moved toward the large outdoor platform where the ceremony would take place.

Rows of chairs waited beneath the bright afternoon sky.

Parents filled the seats beyond them, cameras ready, smiles wide with pride.

Elena took her place among the graduates, smoothing the sleeves of her robe nervously.

From here, she could see almost everything.

The courtyard.

The teachers.

The endless sea of proud families.

But still no Adrian.

The ceremony began with speeches—long ones.

The headmaster talked about leadership, ambition, and responsibility. Several teachers shared memories about the graduating class.

Some students laughed.

Others listened quietly.

Elena tried to focus, but her thoughts drifted.

She kept glancing toward the edge of the courtyard.

Still nothing.

Had he already left?

The idea left an unexpected hollow feeling in her chest.

Eventually, the moment everyone had been waiting for arrived.

The calling of names.

One by one, students walked across the stage to receive their diplomas.

Cheers erupted from families.

Cameras flashed.

Laughter and applause filled the air.

"Elena Rivera."

Her name echoed through the speakers.

For a moment, everything felt surreal.

She stood, walked across the stage, and accepted the diploma with slightly trembling hands.

The applause sounded distant, like she was hearing it underwater.

But as she stepped down from the stage, something caught her attention.

At the far edge of the courtyard.

Standing beneath the shadow of one of the tall stone archways.

Adrian Volkov.

He wasn't wearing his graduation robe.

His hands rested in the pockets of his dark coat, his posture calm as always.

But his eyes were watching the stage.

Watching her.

Their gazes met across the crowd.

Just like before.

Just like all the other quiet moments they had shared.

But this time felt different.

Final.

Elena's heart skipped.

Why wasn't he with the other graduates?

Why was he standing alone?

Before she could think further, the ceremony ended in a burst of celebration.

Students threw their caps into the air.

Cheers filled the courtyard.

People rushed forward to hug friends and family.

The noise was overwhelming.

But Elena barely noticed.

Her eyes searched for Adrian again.

He was still standing beneath the archway.

Waiting.

Without fully understanding why, Elena began walking toward him.

Step by step, the crowd thinned between them.

Until finally, she stood only a few feet away.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

The sounds of celebration echoed behind them, but here, beneath the quiet stone arch, everything felt strangely still.

"So," Elena said softly.

"I guess this is our last day."

Adrian studied her for a moment.

Something unreadable flickered in his dark eyes.

"Maybe," he replied.

The single word lingered between them.

And somehow…

It didn't feel like an ending at all.
