Torin's mother sighed. "Torin, whatever happened between the two of you, Lila has made her decision. She is engaged to another man now."
"I know."
"Then accept it."
"I cannot." He looked away, his jaw tightening. "I gave that woman everything. I trusted her. I changed my entire life because of what she told me. I listened to her when she said I should stop fighting for Amara. I believed her when she made me think she actually wanted me."
His mother's expression softened. "And now she is marrying someone else."
Torin laughed bitterly. "Exactly." He ran a hand over his face. "How am I supposed to forget that?"
Then he shook his head and continued, "I will never forget what she did to me. Not after everything I sacrificed for her and all the devotion I gave her."
"Torin..."
"No, mum." He shook his head. "I refuse to be treated like I am worthless simply because our family is not as wealthy as hers."
His voice hardened.
