By evening, the entire office had emptied.
But Emily was still working.
Stacks of documents covered her desk.
Her eyes felt heavy from staring at spreadsheets all day.
She glanced at the clock.
9:15 PM.
"Why am I still here?"
Just then Alexander stepped out of his office.
"You're not finished."
Emily stared at him.
"Of course I'm not finished! You gave me enough work for three people!"
Alexander walked closer and placed another folder on her desk.
"This report needs revision."
Emily dropped her head onto the desk dramatically.
"You're trying to kill me."
Alexander crossed his arms.
"You accepted the job."
Emily groaned.
"Temporarily!"
Alexander didn't respond.
Instead, he walked to the window and looked out over the city lights.
After a moment he spoke quietly.
"Hard work builds discipline."
Emily looked at him.
"And what builds happiness?"
Alexander didn't answer.
For a brief moment, his expression seemed distant.
Almost… sad.
But then it disappeared.
"Finish the report," he said.
Emily sighed but continued working.
Around 10:30 PM she finally finished.
"I'm done!"
Alexander checked the document.
This time he nodded.
"Acceptable."
Emily leaned back in her chair.
"High praise."
Alexander almost smiled.
Almost.
