Chapter 1 - Chapter 0: Genesis

Date: Before time had meaning. Location: The Void.

What am I? I… don't know. I'm just kind of… drifting through this endless darkness. I'm conscious, I know that much, but I'd rather not be. Nothing is happening there, I wish there was something to get rid of my boredom. Oh? What's that? Why is there light all around me now? That startled me, everything's way too bright!

(Picture a universe full of stars, illuminating the infinite darkness for a moment before it all turns inky black once again)

Oh. The lights went out. I liked the lights though. Oh, there they are again ! Are they just appearing because I want them to be there? I like this. I want more.

The lights keep disappearing at random. I don't want this, but it doesn't stop. I notice it doesn't happen all at once, like there's something other than me putting an end to them.

I know what to do! I'll just make a really, really big light so that it never disappears, using a lot of other smaller lights. Here goes nothing! Oh. It's getting smaller. It's still there though ! But it's really hard and rough now, instead of being smooth and malleable like the other lights. It doesn't shine anymore either, except for that orange stuff covering it. I need to fix that! Let's see… I'll just take some light out of it and make it into a strong light ball next to it. There it is ! The hard light kind of shines again now, just with a little help.

(Picture a rocky planet covered in magma, illuminated by and gravitating around a giant sun-like star that was formed from the planet, through the narrating entity's powers)

Alright, I'm bored again now. What should I do now?... Oh? What's going on? The hard light I made is changing colors. It was all black and orange now, and now it's green and blue. I've never wished for anything like this, this is so weird! I didn't think anything could happen without me wishing for it. I need to take a closer look!

There's so much detail on the hard light! It's not like the smooth lights, that just do nothing and shine bright. This one has different colors of blue light that moves very easily when I want them to move. It's like a different state of matter altogether, and whenever I wish for it to become hot it dissolves and starts flying, becoming ANOTHER state of matter! I love this, I could've never come up with that idea. What's that? These lights are moving by themselves, without my intervention. They're consuming the blue light. Oh, they're extinguished. These lights really don't last long, do they? But there's just so many of them, and they keep replicating themselves somehow. What are they doing? They're approaching the spot where I'm transforming blue light from malleable to loose particles to distract myself. I'm noticing though, they're a bit different from the last ones I saw.

I get it! They're trying to communicate with me, I think! I see them using the parts that let them perceive light to try to perceive me, and they flail their appendages around. I wish I understood what they are trying to tell me, if they're also conscious. Oh, there it is! I'm learning a bunch of new things. The blue light is… named? They named it water, and they need it to survive. Apparently they use names to make it easier to process the light and darkness around them. I don't know why they need to do that, but it's entertaining to see them naming stuff! The long green and brown lights are trees, and they need them for… shelter? What's that? Well I don't really mind. I should probably give them more of these things if they like it, they did go through the trouble of communicating with me after all.

What are they doing??? The trees I gave them! They're reshaping them into… other things?... And they're residing inside of these things now. I guess they don't like the caves anymore. They've started naming things like the lights I first created, calling them stars and constellations. They've also started calling me "god". Apparently I'm a higher being than them, and so they worship me. They even take other autonomous lights and extinguish them for me on altars! They're really dedicated, I like them. As a show of good faith, I should also give them a name. Let's see… They look a lot like the lights they call monkeys, so monkeys it is.

The monkeys started congregating, now that they have these things called "houses", made of the trees I give them. Now they even make some using hard light, that they call stone! I love them, they're so creative. I'm jealous, since I've tried wishing myself to be more creative than them but it didn't work.

Oh, I spaced out for a moment. It's funny, I'm starting to think a little bit like them. They have this thing called "time" apparently, and they keep track of it. Before time, I was just thinking in terms of "before" and "after" I did something. That's a great change of pace, granted it's not very useful to me is it? Since I don't "die" like they do, I don't care too much about time.

I spaced out for too long… before I knew it, they made big settlements that they call "cities" all over the rock that they call the "continent"... I wish I could take that "time" thing and force it to stop. But I can't, apparently. This sucks, I need to pay closer attention to the monkeys if I don't want to miss their interesting stuff. Wait, they even lost all their hair! No fair!

Okay I have an idea. I'm going to be creative, just like the monkeys! Well, they started calling themselves "humans", I think? Their language is changing so fast, I constantly have to update my knowledge by copying the information from their "brains" into my consciousness. I should probably start calling them humans instead of monkeys, they always come up with the best stuff anyways! They even changed my name from just "god", and were nice enough to give me a proper one, "Nyx". I'm spacing out again… I need to do what they do. They have these leader humans, who command other humans to help them keep track of stuff. What if I had my own leader humans? I should try that!

It's not really working as intended. They either go crazy, explode or run away in fear every time I try to show myself to them to talk to them. That made me discover that my feelings could get hurt, just like theirs. I'll just reinforce their bodies with a lot of light before talking to them, so they don't explode just by being next to me. How many humans do I need?... Probably something like four. Oh. That was a mistake… Now they're just like me, they lost their corporeal form and turned into clouds of light. But they're still here, I can sense them! I know what I'm going to do, I'm going to give them a human-like form so it's easier for them to gather their consciousness. That'll also help them talk to other humans without frightening them, and… Wait, how did I not think of that first?! I could just take a human-like form, using a little bit of my own personal light so it doesn't shine too brightly and make them explode! See, I can be creative when I want to! Let's focus… What do I want… erm. They seem to think I'm a female of their species, so I might as well look like that. It would take too long to get rid of all the lights that gravitate around my existence, I'll just make them smaller. There! A human-like form of my own!

(Picture an entity made of pure light and stars vaguely resembling a woman, with long black hair, wearing a dress weaved of darkness scarcely illuminated by stars, like a night sky. Her irises were essentially two miniature stars in the center of her eyes, glowing a golden color.)

I think I nailed the look, I don't see anything wrong or too un-human-like. Oooh, it feels weird to have "hands" and… "legs"? I don't like those. I'm just going to ignore gravity while I'm in this form. Oh, the incorporeal humans are awakening! Why are they screaming? They're panicking? Why??? Fine, stop! I will give you your human-like forms too, so calm down!

I extend my hands towards nothingness and begin weaving human forms for the four humans I turned into clouds of cosmic dust. In the middle of that, I realize it. I'll have peers! Beings like me, that never lose their light! In other words, "gods", as the humans have been calling my kind!
