Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: Uncle, Are You a Lone Wolf?

"Truly, in all the martial arts of the world, only speed is unbeatable."

Zhang Yang felt extremely bitter inside.

He had a ton of strength, yet he couldn't even touch a single strand of the other party's fur.

That feeling was pure agony.

But if you asked him to just lie down and accept death, that was absolutely impossible.

He definitely couldn't win in a fight, but cursing the other guy out? That should be fine, right?

Knowing full well he couldn't hit the tiger, Zhang Yang opened his mouth and started swearing.

"You damn bastard! First you peed all over me, then you blew me over, and now you're going even further—you actually want my life! Let me tell you, even if I die, I'll haunt you forever. I curse you to be a single dog for the rest of your miserable life!"

Zhang Yang was cursing with great enthusiasm.

But in the end, all that eloquent abuse converged into one long, drawn-out wolf howl.

It sounded incredibly tragic and heroic.

The little tiger had no idea what Zhang Yang had been babbling about. All he knew was that tonight he could enjoy some nice crunchy bones.

Yeah… there really wasn't much meat on Zhang Yang.

The scene that followed should have been predictable: Zhang Yang would be torn apart alive by the little tiger.

But before the little tiger could make his move, several wolf howls rang out.

It was the jungle wolves responding to Zhang Yang's howl.

Zhang Yang himself hadn't expected anything like this to happen.

And most importantly—he actually understood what those howls meant.

In summary, the howls told him one thing:

Brother, hold on—we're coming.

Zhang Yang felt deeply moved.

But his body was very honest and didn't dare move an inch.

If he startled the little tiger right now and it chomped down on his head, he'd be finished for real.

The little tiger frowned.

He had heard the wolf howls too.

To be honest, in this entire area, there was basically nothing that could make him afraid.

But wolf packs? He really did have some reservations about them. If he could avoid provoking one, he would.

About ten or twenty seconds later, the wolf pack arrived.

They were still carrying their food—the brown bear.

And the jungle wolf that Zhang Yang had killed earlier.

Zhang Yang instantly became uneasy again.

Because he had no idea whether these wolves were here to help him or to kill him.

Immediately after, the arriving wolves started baring their teeth at the little tiger.

Wolves are very united creatures. Even an unknown lone wolf like Zhang Yang—who had popped up out of nowhere—was someone they wanted to save.

The little tiger backed off. He didn't want to get into trouble with a whole wolf pack just for a bit of crunchy bone.

After giving Zhang Yang one last glance, the little tiger finally left without attacking him again.

"Ding, task triggered: Arch-Nemesis. Task requirement: Kill the tiger that has humiliated you time and time again. Task reward: Unknown."

Humiliated?

Holy crap, System—are you blind? Which eye of yours saw him humiliate this Yang?

When Zhang Yang heard this task, he felt quite unhappy inside.

It was just normal hunting and being hunted—how did it suddenly escalate to "humiliation"?

What the hell?

If anyone humiliated this Yang, wasn't it you, the damn System?

Having narrowly escaped death, Zhang Yang felt lucky and was still in the mood to nitpick the System's wording.

At the same time, he felt genuine gratitude toward the wolf pack.

And he was also very excited—this was the first group of beings he could actually communicate with since arriving in this world.

"Lone wolf, where did you come from?"

Before Zhang Yang could even respond, the alpha wolf stepped forward from the pack that had surrounded him after driving the tiger away.

This alpha was the biggest in the pack, and his gaze carried real intimidation.

"I… I…"

Zhang Yang stammered twice, then promptly collapsed.

Being able to communicate was great and all, but explaining things? No way in hell.

Because Zhang Yang genuinely had no idea what to say—he didn't understand this world at all, okay?

The more he said, the more mistakes he'd make. Plus he was injured right now, so pretending to faint wasn't too much, right?

"He fainted."

"Should we take him with us?"

Zhang Yang lay on the ground looking pretty miserable.

The wolves didn't suspect he was faking it—after all, he had bled so much. Fainting from blood loss was perfectly normal, wasn't it?

The only question was whether to take him along. Normally, wolf packs don't accept lone wolves.

Zhang Yang prayed silently in his heart.

Please don't take me with you.

I'm perfectly fine on my own.

Unfortunately, fate had other plans.

"Take him back."

The alpha gave the order.

In the alpha's eyes, Zhang Yang wasn't an ordinary lone wolf—solely because of that one howl he had let out earlier.

He looked very skinny and weak, but he must be a creature of great wisdom. Otherwise, how could a single howl carry so many layers of meaning?

Of course, wolf howls aren't that precise in conveying meaning, so the alpha had only caught the general idea.

If he had fully understood the part about "peeing and blowing," he absolutely would not have taken Zhang Yang along.

Zhang Yang, still lying on the ground pretending to be unconscious, was no longer calm.

These wolves weren't playing by the rules at all! This Yang isn't one of your pack, and I don't have the ability to hunt. Why are you bringing a burden like me back? Just to feed me for free?

Unfortunately, Zhang Yang's silent resistance was completely useless.

A random jungle wolf came over, grabbed him by the scruff with its mouth, tossed its head—and Zhang Yang's skinny body was roughly flung onto the wolf's back.

It hurt like hell, because the rough motion reopened wounds that hadn't closed yet.

His "limb regeneration" ability could be used on injuries like this.

Unfortunately, Zhang Yang's Constitution was too low—the regeneration ability couldn't activate at all.

What made Zhang Yang suffer even more was that he was in so much pain his teeth were chattering, yet he couldn't "wake up." How miserable was that?

After a bumpy ride, Zhang Yang finally felt himself being set down.

He had no idea how far the wolves had carried him.

"Big Cub, come here."

Zhang Yang, who had been tossed onto the ground, heard the alpha's voice.

"Watch him. If he wakes up, give him something to eat."

The alpha gave the order.

"Yes, Dad."

The alpha's child?

But speaking of food… damn, he was really hungry.

Zhang Yang almost wanted to open his eyes immediately.

Before hearing about food, the desire hadn't been so strong.

But the moment the alpha mentioned it, Zhang Yang became starving—seriously starving.

However, the rest of the hunting pack hadn't left yet. It would look way too fake if he woke up the second he heard there was food.

Fortunately, the alpha wasn't going to spend all his time on Zhang Yang—they still had to distribute the food.

Only after Zhang Yang sensed that all the hunting wolves had left did he finally open his eyes.

Right in front of him stood a very young juvenile jungle wolf—about the size of a full-grown golden retriever—staring at him with curious eyes.

"Wow, you're awake?"

"Where is this place? Where am I?"

Zhang Yang was asking questions he already knew the answer to. This was obviously the jungle wolves' den—a fairly spacious cave. There must be water nearby because the air felt very humid.

"This is home. Uncle, are you a lone wolf?"

The little wolf was extremely curious. He seemed to have completely forgotten his father's instructions and wasn't even thinking about getting Zhang Yang something to eat.

"Kinda, yeah. Little guy, you should call me big brother."

Zhang Yang took this kind of thing quite seriously. Uncle? That would make him sound way older for no reason.

"Okay, big brother. Is the outside world fun?"
