"Why? Why did you do something like this, Mordred?"
Sera's voice trembled with anger and pain as she looked at someone she trusted, yet he now stood above the corpses of her knights and citizens.
The knight standing before her raised his head and looked at her with eyes that held a mixture of anger and frustration. Then he raised his hand and removed the silver helmet covering his face, allowing Sera to see what had been hidden beneath it.
When his face was revealed, Sera's words froze in her throat, and she became unable to utter a single word, because the face she saw was exactly identical to her own, as though she were looking into a mirror reflecting her image, but with eyes filled with hatred and rage, as though she were seeing herself in another, evil version.
"What... what is happening here? How can this be?"
Sera muttered in a barely audible voice, her eyes widening from the intensity of the shock. She could not understand how something like this had happened. The scene before her felt like a waking nightmare.
Mordred looked at her with features twisted by rage and shouted at the top of his voice, as though he were releasing everything he had carried inside himself for years of frustration, bitterness, and waiting. His voice trembled from the intensity of his emotions.
"Look! Aren't we alike? Am I not your son? Then why didn't you even recognize me? Why did you ignore me and refuse to acknowledge me?"
But before Mordred could finish his outburst, a woman suddenly appeared behind him without any warning. She wore loose clothing that was completely black, along with a veil covering her face so that only her eyes, shining like two glowing embers, could be seen. In her hand, she held a dagger surrounded by an ominous black aura that rose like thick smoke.
Then, with blinding speed, she drove the dagger into Mordred's back, directly where his heart was.
Mordred's body trembled, and he slowly turned his head to see who was behind him. His eyes carried an even greater shock than the one Sera had shown, and he spoke his final words in a hoarse voice as blood began flowing from his mouth, eyes, and ears at the same time, as though the black dagger were draining his soul.
"Mother... w... why?"
The woman standing behind him raised her hand and gently placed it upon Mordred's head, as though bidding him farewell or blessing him on his final journey. Then she spoke in a calm voice, yet one that carried a firm and cold tone at the same time.
"You can rest now, my daughter. You did well. You fulfilled your role perfectly."
The place fell silent for a moment. There was nothing except the sound of Sera's heavy breathing as she struggled to understand what was happening.
Then, suddenly, right before her eyes, Mordred's body collapsed onto the ground, falling like a puppet whose strings had been severed, and his movements finally became still.
At the same time, Sera felt something strange happening inside her body, as though the stab from the black dagger had reached her as well. She began feeling a sharp pain piercing through her chest and rising toward her head. She suddenly fell to her knees on the ground, with blood flowing from her mouth, nose, eyes, and ears at the same time, as though she were suffering from the exact same wound that had struck Mordred, as though the black dagger had stabbed her through his soul. She coughed violently, struggling to breathe.
But she raised her head with tremendous difficulty and stared at the figure standing before her. She did not need to see her features to know who she was. Sera screamed with all the strength she had left, despite the pain and the blood covering her face.
"The Mother Witch... you... you evil woman! Was all of this your doing?"
