Chapter 4 - Four: The Vampires Are On My Neck

Elena has been surrounded by death her whole life because of the time she's spent in the foster care system.

Careless kids getting involved in car accidents, drug addicts dying from an overdose and depressed kids taking their lives. Not once did they come back, not once did they rise from the dead looking all different. She's never seen anything like that until now.

These people were dead; they died. She knows this because they weren't moving. Those vampires killed them. They did, and now they're back as vampires.

They don't look like the kind of couple she met five days ago. They look like the monsters that tried to kill her earlier.

Their eyes, which were once magnificent blue, are scary red, and their teeth extra sharp.

"Come, Elena, don't leave us," Mary says, and they might look like monsters, but they don't sound like one.

"Yes, we can be a family just like you wanted." Says Julius with his hand stretched waiting for Elena to grab it. Elena looks at the hand and then looks at him; she's considering it. Because she really did want to start a family with them. She saw a bright future, a chance to stay away from the foster care system, permanently.

But now she's just learned that her parents were killed; they didn't abandon her, and she probably has family on the planet where she's from.

"Elena, vampires can be very compelling. Stupidly compelling. Don't fall for it." Perri says his sword is already in his hand, ready to fight. Ready to protect her.

"Elena, are you going to listen to this stranger over us. We're your new family, Elena."

Elena looks them up and down. Those aren't the people who were ready to have her as their daughter. Those people are dead; they were killed by vampires and now they're vampires as well.

"I'm sorry, guys. I'd like to thank you all for everything, but I already have a family. They're back home, and I'm going with Perri to find them."

"You're going to leave us?" Mary says, her eyes so sad, but Elena can't fall for that because the red eyes are super distracting.

"I'm sorry I have a family now. But hey! It was nice knowing you guys." she snaps her fingers and points at them like some American TV host.

She thinks they understand, and then a scream startles her.

Julius has his mouth wide open with his fangs open, and then he and Mary turn into large bat-like creatures.

"What the fu-"

They scream.

They look more monstrous than before.

They have gigantic, large wings, teeth sharper than before, and eyes blood red. They look like bats, but the humanoid version.

"Give us your blood Elena." and they don't sound human anymore, they sound like the monsters that they are.

"What's with this weird obsession with my blood?" Elena asks herself. "I'm not giving it to you."

"Stay close, Elena."

"Oh man, I don't want another vampire bite." She pauses, then she looks at herself. "What?" Then she touches her neck. Nothing. It's like the bite never happened, and that vampire didn't throw her toward a glass table. She's healed.

Does this come with being a fairy? She thinks to herself, but then again, this has never happened to her before.

That's because she's never been wounded before.

She's come to the realisation that she's never been wounded before.

This has been happening to her, but she hasn't noticed until now.

More screaming. Elena flinches when she sees Julius flying toward Perri. Perri is about to slay this thing, but Julius manages to throw his sword away and Perri, along with it. Perri goes flying away, hitting the wall with a loud thud.

Elena flinches like she's the one who felt the crash.

She receives a grip around her neck, again. Julius lifts her, and Mary is next to him. Elena struggles to get herself free; she kicks her legs in the air, but they're too strong.

"Mhmm, I'm so hungry," Mary says, taking Elena's scent. Elena wants to tell them that this isn't them and they're not killers like she's some pick-me in a movie.

But she can't do that because they're vampires, they're long gone and also, one has his hand around her neck, so she can't really say anything, can she?

"You will taste good." He brings Elena closer, and Mary leans closer to have a bite. Elena is ready to get bitten, to receive the sharp teeth on her neck. But the only pain she receives is that of her whole body because she's fallen to the ground.

"Ouch," she says, rubbing her temples.

Perri has just put a sword inside Mary's back, and she's withering away, turning into ashes.

"NO!" Julius screams when she sees his wife disappearing, and when she finally gives up the ghost, he lunges toward Perri, attacking him.

Elena can't just watch this mess. She has to do something.

So she gets up from the ground, and she looks for whatever she can find to use to attack Julius. She could easily use her powers, but hardly, because she doesn't remember how she used them in the first place.

She spots a vase, and she runs over to it and picks it up. It's heavy, but she has to carry it because Julius might just kill Perri.

So Elena hits him with the vase, which doesn't faze the vampire; he continues to punch and punch.

Elena is conflicted, doesn't know what to do and then she gets an idea, it's going to hurt but it's going to work. She picks up a piece of the broken vase, and then she slices her wrist with it.

She winces. "Ouu, whoaa, that's gonna leave a mark… or not." She shakes her head. "Hey pea brain!" she shouts with her hand in the air.

"Is this what you want?"

The vampire stops punching Perri, and he looks back to see Elena's hand in the air.

"Fresh blood," Julius whispers and then attempts to fly to Elena, but doesn't succeed because Perri kills him with the golden sword as swiftly as possible before he can reach her.

Julius stops for a second and then looks at the sword that has gone through his body. Then he looks at Elena, and there's something about his eyes that makes her look. It almost looks human.

"Elena?" he says before turning into ashes.

The vampires are gone, all of them… she hopes.

She sighs.

"Are you okay?" she asks Perri. He's breathing heavily, but he steadies his breath.

"Yeah, you?"

Elena looks at her wrist, and the cut closes up.

"Do fairies heal like this?"

"Nope, only light fairies. Light magic is restorative in nature."

"Oh. Cool. I guess werewolves heal, too."

"Yep," he says, smiling.

"So…" she walks over to him and takes his sword. "This kills vampires."

"It kills any supernatural creature. Especially creatures of darkness."

"Cool, cool." She looks at the sword meticulously. "Okay, I think I'm ready to go to this new world. Experience and learn new things," she says, her eyes still on the sword.

"We can go now."

"Yes, please," she gives him the sword back. "How do we get to a whole new world?

"A mirror."

"A mirror?"

"Yes, that's how we were able to get to Earth. A mirror serves as a transportation between worlds. All we need is…" he reaches out for his bag and brings a smaller bag out of it. "Pixie dust," he waggles his brows.

Elena looks at him and then takes the bag from him. She opens the bag, and she sees sparkly, glowing purple dust.

"OMG! This is pixie dust."

"Yes."

"Wow, so cool," she looks up at Perri. "Follow me," she walks away, and Perri does as he's told. So they go upstairs into a room. A full-length mirror stands there.

"Perfect," Perri says. "May I sunshine?" he says with his hand stretched out in the most gentlemanly way possible.

"Why, you may brave knight." She hands him the dust. He winks at her and then looks at the looking glass. They're both staring at their reflection. Elena looks a mess in her dirty party outfit.

She's going to miss Earth after all. But this isn't her home; she's always felt this way.

Perri blows the dust on the mirror, and the glass wobbles.

"Alright, hold my hand," and Elena doesn't have to be asked twice, so she holds Perri's hand. Tight.

They both look at each other awkwardly before looking away, blushing like little kids.

"Hold on tight now," he says, and so she does.

And the two walk through the looking glass.
