Chapter 10 - A subtle Bond

Chapter 9 — A Subtle Bond

The mansion felt quieter that morning, though Lina knew better than to trust its silence. Ever since the letter arrived, her nerves were taut, like a bowstring ready to snap.

Determined not to be a passive player in Adrian's world, she decided to focus on learning. Today's lesson: business etiquette and negotiation skills. Adrian believed that a competent wife reflected well on him — and Lina wanted to survive in his world.

"You must understand value," Adrian said as they walked through the study. "Every word, every gesture, every move can have consequences. Do you understand?"

"Yes, sir," Lina replied, keeping her voice steady, though her stomach twisted.

Hours passed as she practiced reading contracts, analyzing letters, and mimicking Adrian's gestures and posture. Every mistake drew a subtle correction from him — sometimes a pointed look, sometimes a brief touch to adjust her posture.

By mid-afternoon, Lina felt drained but… something unexpected happened.

Adrian lingered near the window, watching her work silently. His gaze was intense but not harsh — almost… approving. Lina felt a strange warmth, a flutter she couldn't quite place.

"You're learning quickly," he said finally, his voice low, almost distant. "Faster than I expected."

Lina's cheeks flushed. "Thank you, sir."

He nodded once, then returned to reviewing documents. The moment was fleeting, but Lina realized she didn't want it to end.

Later, in the garden, she practiced walking with grace and poise — a skill Adrian had stressed repeatedly. She stumbled slightly on the gravel path.

"You're too tense," he remarked from the porch. "Relax. Control your movements, but don't hide yourself entirely."

His advice was simple, yet profound. Lina realized he was teaching her more than etiquette — he was teaching her confidence, awareness, and presence. Skills she could use in the mansion… and perhaps beyond.

By evening, Lina sat in her room, exhausted but thoughtful. She had made mistakes, yes, but she had also learned.

And there was another realization she couldn't ignore: she was beginning to understand Adrian — his moods, his expectations, and even the brief moments where he let his guard down.

A sudden sound broke her thoughts. A soft creak in the hallway. Lina froze, heart racing. The mansion was never silent.

Someone was there. Watching. Waiting.

And this time, Lina didn't want to ignore it.
