Chapter 12 - Shadows in the Hallway

Chapter 11 — Shadows in the Hallway

The next morning, Lina woke to a faint chill creeping through her room. Despite the sunlight streaming through the windows, the mansion felt colder than usual.

She couldn't shake the events of the night before — the intruder, the whisper, Adrian's unreadable expression. Every shadow in the hall seemed alive.

Determined to stay alert, she moved quietly through the corridors, keeping her eyes on every flicker of movement.

Near the staircase, she froze. A shadow darted across the wall, too quick for her to see clearly.

"Hello?" she called softly, her voice barely more than a whisper.

No answer. Just silence.

Lina's heartbeat quickened. She turned to retreat but froze again. There, at the end of the hallway, a figure leaned against the wall. Not moving, but watching.

"Who's there?" Lina demanded, trying to sound braver than she felt.

The figure stepped into the light. It was someone she recognized — one of the mansion staff, someone she thought she could trust.

"Miss Lina," the person said quietly, glancing around nervously. "I… I need to warn you. There's something going on in this mansion. Something… dangerous."

Lina's stomach twisted. "What do you mean?"

Before the staff member could answer, a loud crash echoed from the library. Both of them jumped. Lina's hands shook as adrenaline surged through her.

Adrian appeared suddenly at the top of the stairs, his presence commanding the hall. "Stay back," he ordered, eyes scanning for threats.

The staff member looked at him nervously. "Sir, I… I think someone has been sneaking around the mansion at night."

Adrian's jaw tightened. "I know," he said calmly, though his eyes were sharp. "I've been tracking them. But now… it's getting bolder."

Lina's heart raced. Someone was inside the mansion. Watching, waiting, and now… taking action.

She realized with a sinking feeling that her life under Adrian's roof was far more dangerous than she had imagined.

And worse, she understood this clearly: she couldn't trust anyone completely — not the staff, not visitors, and maybe… not even Adrian himself.

The mansion, once a place of luxury, had become a labyrinth of secrets and threats. And Lina knew that surviving it would require more than obedience — it would require cunning, courage, and nerves of steel.
