Chapter 2 - The Bond That Shouldn’t Exist

Darkness wasn't empty.

It burned.

Elena felt it before she understood it.

Fire in her veins.

Her chest refused to rise. Her lungs were locked.

But her heart—

Her heart was pounding.

Violently.

Too violently.

She wasn't breathing.

And yet she was alive.

A sharp breath tore into her lungs as her body convulsed.

Air flooded in.

She coughed hard, rolling onto her side, fingers digging into the asphalt.

Pain.

Everywhere.

Her neck felt like molten steel had been poured beneath her skin.

"What… did you do to me?" she rasped.

The man was still kneeling beside her.

Still bleeding.

Still watching her like she was something fragile and dangerous at the same time.

"I saved you," he said.

Her laugh came out broken.

"By letting a monster bite me?"

His jaw tightened.

"I didn't let it."

Her senses were wrong.

Too sharp.

She could hear cars passing three streets away.

Hear the buzzing inside the hospital lights.

Hear—

His heartbeat.

Slow.

Powerful.

Controlled.

Her gaze snapped to him.

She could smell him.

Not just blood.

Something else.

Cold night air. Smoke. Wildness.

Her body reacted before her mind did.

Her pulse synced with his.

The sensation hit like a magnetic pull beneath her ribs.

No.

No, no, no.

Her rational mind scrambled for control.

Adrenaline-induced hallucination.Severe trauma response.Neurological misfiring.

She grabbed his collar.

"Take me to the ER," she demanded. "Now."

His expression shifted.

Something conflicted flickered across his features.

"You can't go back inside."

"I work there."

"You're not human anymore."

Silence.

The word hung between them like a blade.

Her grip tightened.

"I am a doctor," she said slowly. "I have a medical degree. I have a license. I have anatomy textbooks memorized. There is no biological pathway for spontaneous species alteration."

His lips twitched faintly.

"You're adorable when you're in denial."

She shoved him away.

Her strength—

Her strength sent him sliding back farther than it should have.

They both froze.

Her eyes widened.

She stared at her own hands.

That wasn't possible.

She wasn't that strong.

He stood slowly, studying her like a puzzle.

"That's not normal," he murmured.

"Nothing about tonight is normal!"

Her vision flickered.

For a split second—

She saw him differently.

Heat signature.Muscle tension.Heartbeat rhythm.

And behind him—

The trees.

She could see movement in the forest.

Not clearly.

But she knew something was there.

Watching.

Her head snapped toward the treeline.

"You're not done," she whispered.

His posture changed instantly.

Predator.

Protective.

He stepped closer to her without thinking.

Instinctively placing himself between her and the darkness.

"I told you to run," he said quietly.

"You think I listen to strangers who bleed all over parking lots?"

Despite the tension, something in his gaze shifted.

Interest.

That was the first moment he truly looked at her.

Not as a mistake.

Not as collateral damage.

But as something unexpected.

"You didn't die," he said.

"That was the goal."

"No," he murmured. "You stopped breathing."

Her stomach dropped.

"I what?"

"You were gone for twelve seconds."

She felt it.

Somewhere in her chest.

Something new.

Something not fully human.

He stepped closer again.

Too close.

Heat radiated from him.

Her body reacted.

Her pulse accelerated.

Not fear.

Something deeper.

Her breathing grew shallow.

His eyes darkened.

"You can feel it," he said softly.

"I feel like I need a CT scan."

"The bond."

She swallowed.

"What bond?"

His hand hovered near her face.

He didn't touch her.

But the air between them vibrated.

"When a wolf bites a human, the human dies," he said. "Or turns."

"And I—"

"You did both."

Her heart skipped.

"That's not medically possible."

He leaned in slightly.

"It is in my world."

Something snapped in the forest.

A branch breaking.

Elena turned sharply.

This time she didn't just sense it.

She smelled it.

Wet fur.

Hunger.

Her pupils dilated.

Her teeth ached.

Her bones vibrated.

"I can smell them," she whispered.

His expression hardened.

"They came back."

"How many?"

"Too many."

Her brain should have been screaming.

Instead—

Her blood felt electric.

Alive.

"Tell me what's happening," she demanded.

"You were bitten by a rogue Alpha," he said. "I tried to stop him."

"And you are?"

"Adrian."

"That's not what I meant."

His gaze locked onto hers.

"I am the Alpha of this territory."

The air shifted.

Even without understanding it—

She felt the weight of that statement.

Dominance.

Authority.

Power.

Her instincts reacted.

Not submission.

Resistance.

Her chin lifted.

"I don't belong to you."

Something dangerous flickered in his eyes.

"That's the problem."

The trees exploded.

Three wolves emerged from the darkness.

Massive.

Fast.

Hunting.

Adrian stepped in front of her fully now.

His body shielding hers.

"You need to run," he said.

She didn't move.

Her heartbeat slowed.

Not from calm.

From focus.

The wolves circled.

Their eyes locked onto her.

Not him.

Her.

Why?

Her skin burned again.

Her veins pulsed.

One of the wolves lunged.

She reacted without thinking.

Her body moved.

Too fast.

She caught the wolf mid-air.

Her hands gripping its fur.

Its weight should have crushed her.

Instead—

She threw it.

Hard.

It slammed into a parked car, metal denting on impact.

Silence.

All three wolves froze.

Adrian stared at her.

Shock.

Genuine shock.

"That's impossible," he breathed.

Her hands trembled.

"What did you do to me?"

The remaining wolves backed away.

Not from Adrian.

From her.

The rogue's scent still lingered in her bloodstream.

Something inside her shifted.

Not fully wolf.

Not fully human.

Something else.

Ancient.

Unfamiliar.

Adrian stepped closer slowly.

"Look at me," he said.

She did.

His eyes widened.

"Your irises…"

"What about them?"

"They're not gold."

Cold crawled down her spine.

"What color are they?"

"They're silver."

The wolves in the distance lowered their heads.

Not in attack.

In acknowledgment.

Submission.

Adrian's expression changed completely.

Realization.

"You're not just turned," he said.

"What does that mean?"

His voice dropped.

"You're marked."

"By what?"

He didn't answer.

Because at that exact moment—

A distant howl split the night.

Long.

Deep.

Commanding.

Not a rogue.

Not one of his pack.

Something older.

Something higher.

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"They felt you," he said quietly.

"Who?"

He looked at her like she had just stepped onto a battlefield she didn't understand.

"The Council."

Her pulse thudded once.

Hard.

And for the first time—

Adrian looked concerned.
