Chapter 6 - The First Sovereign

The creature did not step forward.

It unfolded.

Black fire peeled away from its frame like burning silk, revealing a tall silhouette — elongated, wrong in proportion, its limbs too fluid, its spine too straight.

Its eyes glowed crimson.

Not wolf.

Not human.

Ancient.

Every wolf in the compound was on their knees.

Including those who had faced death without flinching minutes earlier.

Elena remained standing.

Not because she was brave.

Because her body refused to bow.

"Sovereign," the entity repeated.

Its voice was layered.

Like multiple echoes speaking through one throat.

Adrian's hand tightened around her wrist.

"Do not answer it."

Kael did not kneel either.

But he stepped back.

Just slightly.

Interesting.

"You know what it is," Elena whispered.

Adrian's voice was controlled.

"Yes."

"What?"

"Older than the packs."

The land beneath her feet pulsed violently.

The black flames licked at the boundary again.

The entity's gaze locked onto her.

"You woke," it said.

Not accusing.

Observing.

Elena swallowed.

"I didn't mean to."

A ripple of low sound spread through the air.

Not laughter.

Something close.

"You never mean to."

Her pulse thudded hard.

"What are you?"

The crimson eyes narrowed slightly.

"I am what remains when Sovereigns fall."

The words struck like a blade.

Kael's voice cut in sharply.

"Do not engage it."

Elena didn't look at him.

"What does that mean?" she demanded.

The entity tilted its head.

"Once, there were many like you."

Her breath hitched.

"They did not kneel."

The wolves around her trembled.

"They did not answer to Alphas."

The ground beneath her feet cracked slightly.

"They answered only to the land."

Adrian's grip tightened.

"Enough."

The entity ignored him.

"They bound territory not by dominance… but by will."

A flash of something tore through Elena's mind.

Not memory.

Imprint.

A woman standing on a cliff centuries ago.

Silver eyes.

Wolves kneeling.

Fire rising from the ground.

Her knees weakened.

Adrian caught her.

"Do not let it inside your head."

"I'm not—"

She gasped.

Because she felt it.

The land.

Not just this territory.

Beyond it.

Threads.

Lines.

Boundaries.

All connected.

She wasn't just sensing it anymore.

She was part of it.

The entity's voice deepened.

"When the packs feared losing control… they slaughtered the Sovereigns."

A murmur of horror moved through the wolves.

Kael's jaw tightened.

"That is one version of history."

The crimson gaze flicked toward him.

"You benefited from it."

Kael did not deny that.

Elena's breathing became uneven.

"They killed them?"

Adrian's voice was low.

"Yes."

Her chest tightened.

"Why?"

The entity answered.

"Because Sovereigns do not choose mates."

The words hit differently.

The mate bond flared violently between her and Adrian.

And—

There it was again.

That second thread.

Toward Kael.

Faint.

But real.

Adrian felt it.

His body went rigid.

Kael's eyes sharpened.

Elena stepped back slightly.

"What does that have to do with anything?"

The entity's crimson gaze burned brighter.

"Sovereigns choose territory."

Silence detonated.

"They bind to land," it continued. "Not to men."

Her pulse hammered.

"That's not how wolves work."

"You are not wolf."

The words settled like truth.

Kael spoke quietly.

"That is why the Council fears her."

Adrian's voice sharpened.

"Fear is irrelevant."

"No," Kael replied calmly. "It's inevitable."

The entity took one slow step forward.

The black flames followed.

Wolves flinched but remained kneeling.

"You feel it," the entity said to Elena.

"Yes," she whispered.

"Then claim."

The word vibrated through her bones.

Adrian snapped.

"You will not provoke her."

The entity's gaze flicked to him.

"You cannot command what does not belong to you."

The mate bond burned.

Painfully.

Elena's eyes flashed silver.

The ground responded instantly.

The flames recoiled slightly.

The entity paused.

"Interesting."

Her breathing grew heavier.

She wasn't just reacting anymore.

She was pushing back.

The land surged beneath her.

Roots twisted.

Stone cracked.

The crimson glow dimmed slightly.

The entity's head tilted again.

"You learn quickly."

Adrian stepped in front of her fully now.

"You will leave."

The entity did not move.

"If she does not claim," it said quietly, "another will."

Elena's gaze snapped up.

"What does that mean?"

Kael answered.

"There are territories without Sovereigns."

Her heart pounded.

"And?"

"And whoever binds them," he said, "rules them."

Adrian's eyes darkened dangerously.

"Enough."

The entity's crimson gaze fixed on Elena once more.

"You are unbound."

The second thread in her chest pulsed harder.

Toward Kael.

She staggered slightly.

Adrian felt it.

His expression shifted from anger—

To something more dangerous.

Jealousy.

"Do not look at him," Adrian growled.

"I'm not—"

Kael's voice lowered.

"You cannot cage her, Adrian."

The mate bond flared violently.

The land responded to her instability.

Trees shook.

The black flames surged again.

The entity spread its arms slowly.

"If you do not claim," it repeated, "you will be claimed."

By who?

She didn't need to ask.

The land beneath the black flames screamed again.

Not metaphorically.

She felt it like a nerve being torn.

Rage ignited inside her.

Not fear.

Rage.

"You hurt it," she said softly.

The entity's crimson gaze flickered.

"It belongs to no one."

"It belongs to me."

The words left her before she could stop them.

Silence.

Absolute.

Adrian's breath caught.

Kael stilled.

The entity went completely motionless.

The land answered.

Not subtly.

A shockwave exploded outward from Elena's position.

Silver light surged across the ground in a wide ring.

The black flames hissed.

Recoiled.

Shrank.

The wolves gasped.

The entity's crimson eyes narrowed.

"So it awakens fully."

Elena stepped forward.

Not consciously.

The silver glow spread beneath her feet.

Roots erupted again—

Not to bind.

To cleanse.

The black flames were forced backward toward the trees.

The entity's silhouette distorted.

"You choose the land," it said quietly.

"I don't choose," she replied, voice layered with something ancient.

"I am."

The crimson glow flickered violently.

The entity stepped back.

For the first time—

It retreated.

The flames collapsed inward.

Swallowed by darkness.

And then—

It was gone.

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Electric.

The wolves slowly lifted their heads.

Not toward Adrian.

Toward her.

Adrian turned slowly.

His gaze was no longer uncertain.

It was something else entirely.

"You just repelled a Warden."

"A what?"

Kael answered.

"Guardians of dead territories."

Her pulse pounded.

"Dead?"

Adrian nodded once.

"When Sovereigns were killed… their land died with them."

Her chest tightened painfully.

"And that thing?"

"It feeds on abandoned bonds," Kael said.

"And it recognized you."

The mate bond between her and Adrian burned steadily now.

But that second thread—

It pulsed too.

Stronger.

Kael stepped closer.

Not aggressively.

But deliberately.

"You felt it," he said quietly.

Adrian moved instantly between them.

"She is not yours."

Kael's gaze didn't leave Elena.

"She is not yours either."

The land pulsed.

Unstable.

Responding to her emotional fracture.

Her breathing grew uneven.

"Stop," she snapped.

Both men froze.

She looked at Adrian first.

"You don't own me."

His jaw tightened.

"I never said I did."

"You act like it."

His voice dropped.

"I protect what stands in my territory."

She turned to Kael.

"And you?"

He smiled faintly.

"I don't protect."

Her pulse skipped.

"I conquer."

Silence.

The implication hung heavy.

The mate bond flared violently between her and Adrian.

But that second pull—

It didn't feel romantic.

It felt strategic.

Kael wasn't pulled by instinct.

He was pulled by opportunity.

The land vibrated uneasily.

Elena exhaled slowly.

"This isn't about either of you."

Both men went still.

She looked toward the horizon.

Beyond the trees.

Beyond this territory.

There were more.

Dead lands.

Abandoned bonds.

Wardens waiting.

And something inside her knew—

This was only the beginning.

Adrian's voice softened slightly.

"What are you thinking?"

She didn't look at him.

"If Sovereigns bind land…"

Her silver gaze sharpened.

"Then I'm not staying in one territory."

Both men reacted instantly.

Adrian's voice hardened.

"That is not happening."

Kael's eyes lit with interest.

"Now that," he murmured, "is interesting."

Elena turned slowly back toward them.

The silver glow hadn't faded.

It had settled.

Anchored.

"I'm not here to be protected," she said quietly.

"I'm here to choose."

The land pulsed once.

Deep.

Far beyond this compound.

And in the distance—

Another territory answered.
