Chapter 89 - Ch 89: Nobara Kugisaki

"I thought you were supposed to be a student just like us." Yuji asked as he walked opposite me.

Behind us was Megumi; he is a relatively tall and slim young man with fair skin and dark-blue eyes that slant upwards to denote his harsher and colder personality. He has uniquely styled black hair with long spikes that jut out in every direction around his head, resembling a sea urchin.

"Well, Gojo asked me to look after you since we're all the same age. He figured it was safer to have one of the best healers around rather than leaving you to his own chaotic methods," I replied with a shrug, then turned my gaze toward Megumi. "And could you stop staring daggers at me? I haven't done anything to offend you yet, have I?"

"No. It's just that you are very different from what I heard, Naoya-san?" Megumi said with an impassioned tone. I didn't know if he was mocking me or serious with that cold look.

"Naoya is fine; I don't care for titles," I corrected him, and he gave a curt nod. "Anyway, what exactly did you hear about me before we met?" I asked. This was actually the first time I had spoken to Megumi directly. I'd had opportunities to seek him out before, but I never did—partly because I knew he was safe under Gojo's watch, and partly because I honestly wasn't sure how to interact with him if we were face-to-face.

And given that in the future, he would join hands with Sukuna for some unknown reason...well, what could possibly push Megumi into that? I know his sister is in the hospital due to Kenjaku; would that be the reason? Yeah, that doesn't make sense.

God, I should have read the manga. Why is the JJK fanbase this cursed? And to think, I wrote Gege a complaint letter despite being on the run after the murders.

"Definitely not this," Megumi said with disappointment.

I didn't even know why he was disappointed. Did he think of me as some macho guy or something?

Anyway, we are on our way to meet the third and final first-year student who will be joining us shortly.

---

Yuji happily ate his ice cream while waiting near Harajuku Station, looking around the bustling streets with obvious fascination. People moved in every direction around us, tourists snapped pictures, and fashionable teenagers walked by wearing outfits that looked as though they had escaped from another dimension entirely.

"You know, isn't it weird that there are only three students in our class?" Yuji suddenly said between bites.

Beside him, Megumi adjusted his posture slightly. His expression remained as stoic as ever, though I had long since learned to recognize that look as his version of boredom. Maybe I am mistaking it.

"It's because jujutsu sorcerers are rare," I explained. "Most people can't even see curses, let alone fight them. Then, among those who can, only a fraction have the talent or desire to become sorcerers. It's not exactly a profession parents dream about for their children."

Yuji nodded thoughtfully. "Makes sense."

Megumi ignored me entirely before suddenly narrowing his eyes toward the opposite side of the road. "Is that the girl we're waiting for?"

Yuji and I followed his line of sight.

Standing near a fashion boutique was a girl wearing the Tokyo Jujutsu High uniform. She had short orange hair styled into a bob cut and carried herself with unmistakable confidence. Unfortunately, she was currently chasing after a terrified talent scout.

"Please wait!" Nobara Kugisaki shouted. "I have the perfect face for modeling!"

"I-I don't have the authority to scout people!" the poor man cried before disappearing into the crowd with surprising speed.

"..."

"..."

"..."

Megumi slowly looked at me. "Should we help?"

"I think we should help the talent scout," I replied honestly.

"Hey! Here!" Before either of us could say anything else, Yuji enthusiastically waved his hand.

The girl immediately turned toward us hearing the shout from Yuji. The moment her eyes landed on Megumi and Yuji, a look of disappointment crossed her face.

"So these are my classmates?" she muttered, and then her gaze shifted toward me. For a brief moment, I thought things were improving. "You look like a potato."

"..."

"..."

"Sorry, that was rude of me...but you really look like Potato Head," she corrected.

I opened my mouth, and then I closed it. I didn't know what to say to her. I had been called many things throughout my life: prodigy, monster, and even beauty incarnate. Okay, maybe not the first two, but I have been called by Beauty Incarnate. But never have I ever been called Potato Head.

If Gojo were called Potato Head, I would understand; his face does look like that in certain positions.

Yuji looked horrified on my behalf. "Hey!" he protested. "Naoya is our supervisor and senior! You shouldn't call him that!"

I slowly raised a hand toward Yuji's shoulder. "It's alright."

Yuji blinked. "Senpai?"

I stared into the distance. "I've fought special-grade curses."

"Uh-huh..."

"I've challenged the Zenin elders."

"...Okay?"

"I've survived Mei Mei's seducing." Yuji nodded uncertainly, not knowing who Mei Mei was but I continued anyway.

"And yet..." I placed a hand over my heart. "Nothing prepared me for this level of emotional damage."

Megumi let out a quiet sigh. "You're being dramatic."

"I've been called a potato, Megumi."

Nobara crossed her arms. "Well, don't take it personally. It's just your face."

I pointed accusingly at her. "Yuji, witness this injustice."

Yuji awkwardly looked between us. "Maybe... sweet potato?" I give a smile, which says I don't have a reply for that, and then I let out a sigh.

*Cough* "Anyway, welcome to Tokyo, Nobara Kugisaki."
