Chapter 92 - CHAPTER 92: SURVEY THE OLD BURIED THINGS

[South Ridge — Pre-Bomb Road — Day 127, 1300]

Raven said "don't open it" before Wick's hand reached the seal.

Wick stopped.

He had been reaching for the cache's exterior seal — the third cache, twelve feet underground at the pre-bomb road's survey point, accessed through the excavation shaft Wick's team had cut that morning. The seal was a composite-metal cover, military specification, the kind that had been standard for pre-bomb electronics caches. His hand had been moving in the specific direction of a person who wanted to understand what was in a container and had decided that looking was the way to understand.

Raven's voice had come from three feet above him — she was on the surface, on the sledge, the handbuilt platform that Sinclair's team had constructed to give her mobility on the ridge's broken terrain. Her leg could not take the slope's surface unaided. The sledge solved the vertical problem but added the specific rhythm of a person who was present at work-sites without being able to be inside them, which was the rhythm she did not name.

"It's asleep," she said. "Whatever is in there. The thing in the box is asleep. The thing in the first cylinder is asleep." She paused. The pause had the quality of someone assembling a sentence from available precision parts. "The thing in the second cylinder is the thing in the first cylinder. Don't wake any of them."

Wick looked up at her through the shaft opening.

"You know what's in there," he said.

"I know what category they're in. I'm not telling you the category." She was drumming her fingers on the sledge's side rail — the specific motor behavior she used when she was calculating while talking. "You can add 'operational security' to whatever you understand about this survey."

Wick looked at the seal.

He moved his hand away.

---

The Resource Detection III function had been active for three weeks before Ethan had run the south ridge survey. He had been delaying it — the Mountain's aftermath had filled the operational schedule with governance work that didn't leave natural space for field surveys. But the Coalition Resource Catalog deliverable had a two-week deadline from Day 113, and two weeks from Day 113 was Day 127, and Day 127 was today.

Three caches: one south, two eastern pre-bomb positions that the survey equipment had flagged during the morning's first run. All three gave the same signature — pre-bomb military electronics, sealed, inactive, at depths between eight and fifteen feet.

The survey equipment itself was the first operational imperfection of the day: the calibration had drifted on the first cache, giving a false position that sent Wick's team to the wrong excavation point for forty-five minutes. Wick caught the calibration error himself — the specific attentiveness of an engineer who had been trained by Sinclair's methodology and had learned that calibration errors were more expensive than calibration checks.

He recalibrated. The correct position came in four minutes after.

[Resource Detection III: FULL UNLOCK. Three pre-bomb caches surveyed.] [CPE Level 24 → 25: Resource-chain threshold crossed.]

Ethan logged the three cache positions in the Designs Ledger under the engineering protocol seal — the Sinclair-protocol flag that Ch.84 had established. The log would be readable by Sinclair and Wick and no one else until the engineering council reviewed it. The positions, the depths, the seal signatures, the fact that all three were inactive and unactivated.

The log had no explanation for why activation was prohibited.

It didn't need one. Sinclair's protocol flag was its own authority: Engineering Council review required before any action. That was enough to prevent casual activation for the foreseeable future.

Raven was at the sledge watching Wick's hands as he resealed the survey shaft's access point.

"I trust the no," Wick said. His voice was the register of a man who was making a statement he had thought through carefully. "I want the why someday."

"Someday you can have the why," Raven said. "Today you can have my no."

She said it without looking at him — looking at the excavated shaft, at the sealed surface, at the south ridge's pre-bomb road surface that had been bombed and rebuilt and bombed again and was now a chemical petrichor scar under the autumn's leaf decay. Three caches asleep under three points along this scar.

Wick nodded once and picked up his survey equipment.

Ethan ate the ration bar from his coat pocket — cold grain, Monty's herbal compound, now in its fifth production cycle and improved from the first batches by the optimization that had been running since Day 23. The bar was the small pleasure of a thing that had been getting better incrementally for 127 days without being celebrated because the celebration belonged to the larger problems.

He finished the bar.

He walked back toward Arkadia with the Designs Ledger entry sealed and the three caches exactly as they had been found: asleep, undisturbed, patient.
