The road to Malina was far less impressive than the roads leading to the Imperial capital.
Sibyl preferred it that way.
The narrower the path became, the less likely she was to encounter anyone who recognized her.
Her horse moved steadily beneath her as the afternoon sun stretched across the countryside. Hills rose in the distance, while clusters of trees cast long shadows across the road.
For most of the journey, everything remained peaceful. It was all…going according to plan. Too simple and easy, if she may say.
Sibyl's eyes narrowed.
Then, she heard a sound. Hoofbeats from a horse. It was faint and distant, but she could hear it as she galloped forward.
Someone was behind her. Her lips twitched.
But, she did not turn instantly. She needed to be calm. Panic often revealed more than calm observation ever could.
Instead, she continued riding, maintaining the same pace, the same posture and same appearance of indifference.
