Chapter 6 - Chapter 6 — The Cook Who Broke the Bottleneck

The walk from Elder Yun's pavilion to the garden gate felt longer than it should have.

Ren Kai descended the stone steps slowly, keeping his eyes on the small ceramic spoon balanced in his hand.

A few grains of golden rice rested inside it.

That was all.

A few grains of rice.

Yet those grains had taken him from a boy who couldn't cultivate to a Body Tempering Fourth Layer cultivator. They had taught him something no cultivation manual had ever managed to explain.

And now he was about to offer them to the man who had spent three years making his life miserable.

His heart beat steadily.

His newly strengthened body felt calm, but his thoughts were anything but.

Below, the Outer Court disciples had gathered in a loose semicircle at the base of the path. Their whispers drifted through the evening air.

Some looked curious. Others skeptical.

Most wore the same expression Ren Kai had seen countless times before: the smug certainty of people who had already decided how things would end.

At the centre stood Liu Feng.

He looked different from the man Ren Kai had encountered that morning.

His robes were dishevelled. His hair had come loose from its usual warrior's knot, and his spiritual energy flickered erratically around him, like a candle struggling against a storm.

The controlled arrogance he had displayed at the training grounds was gone.

Something more volatile had taken its place.

The other disciples seemed to recognise it. They gave him room, careful not to stand too close.

Liu Feng spotted Ren Kai descending the path.

His expression twisted.

"There he is."

His voice carried across the garden.

"The miracle boy. The one who spent three years doing nothing and now thinks he's somebody."

A few disciples laughed.

The sound was weak.

They had seen what Ren Kai had done at the training grounds. They had watched the flame dance across his palm. Whatever they thought of him before, they could no longer dismiss him so easily.

Their certainty was beginning to crack.

And they didn't know what to replace it with.

Ren Kai reached the bottom of the steps and stopped about ten paces away.

He didn't raise his voice.

He didn't clench his fists.

He simply stood there, holding the spoon.

Liu Feng stepped forward, one hand resting on the hilt of his sword.

"Well? Where's your Elder now? Hiding in her kitchen while her pet failure tries to talk his way out of—"

His eyes dropped to the spoon.

He paused.

"What is that?"

"Rice."

The word hung between them.

For a moment, Liu Feng seemed unable to understand what he had heard.

He looked at the spoon, then at Ren Kai, then back at the spoon.

A muscle jumped in his jaw.

"Are you mocking me?"

"I'm offering you something."

"I don't want your garbage cooking."

Liu Feng's voice rose.

"I want to know what trick you used. What pill you stole. What favour you begged from that old woman to make yourself look like a cultivator for one day."

"No tricks," Ren Kai replied. "No pills. Just rice."

He held the spoon forward.

The fading sunlight caught the grains.

A soft golden light shimmered across them, pulsing gently beneath their surface.

The whispers stopped.

One disciple leaned forward, eyes widening.

Another took an involuntary step closer.

Even Liu Feng seemed to lose his words.

"What is that?" he asked.

"Rice that I cooked."

Ren Kai's answer was simple.

"The same rice you've been eating for three years. The same rice you've thrown at me when I didn't serve it quickly enough."

He paused.

"I just prepared it the way it was meant to be prepared."

Liu Feng's fingers tightened around his sword.

"You expect me to believe that?"

"I don't expect you to believe anything."

Ren Kai looked at him.

"But I know you've been stuck at the third layer of Foundation Establishment for six months."

A flicker passed through Liu Feng's eyes.

"The pills aren't working. Your techniques aren't helping. You've spent months trying to break through that barrier, and every time you fail, you try harder."

Ren Kai lowered the spoon slightly.

"How long have you been doing that?"

"Shut up."

"How long?"

Liu Feng's expression darkened.

"You don't know anything about cultivation."

"Maybe not the way you understand it."

Ren Kai stepped forward.

"But I know what it feels like to keep trying something that never works."

Liu Feng's hand tightened around his sword until his knuckles turned white.

"You've never cultivated a day in your life. You were a kitchen servant. You couldn't even register on the Testing Stone."

"That's right."

Ren Kai didn't argue.

"Yesterday, I couldn't sense Qi. Today, I can."

He raised the spoon again.

"And I think you should try this."

Liu Feng stared at him.

"Eat your own garbage."

Ren Kai took another step forward.

"Eat it."

The words were quiet, but they cut through the gathering tension.

He stopped close enough that Liu Feng could see the golden light reflecting in his eyes.

"If you don't like it, I'll leave. I'll go back to the Outer Court, clean your pots, scrub your floors, and never bother anyone again."

The disciples exchanged glances.

Liu Feng's breathing grew uneven.

Ren Kai continued.

"But if you do like it, you'll know something."

"What?"

"That the person who helped you wasn't an alchemist."

He let the words settle.

"Sometimes the answer isn't another pill."

For a long moment, neither moved.

Then Liu Feng's eyes shifted towards the spoon.

Something changed in his expression.

Beneath the anger was exhaustion.

Beneath the pride was something he had spent months trying to hide.

Hunger.

Not the hunger of an empty stomach.

Something older and harder to admit.

The hunger of someone who had followed every instruction, taken every pill, practised every technique, and still found himself staring at a wall he couldn't break.

His hand trembled.

"And if this is a trick?"

"Then you'll have eaten a spoonful of rice."

Liu Feng looked up sharply.

Ren Kai shrugged.

"I suppose that's not the worst thing that could happen."

For a moment, the absurdity of the answer seemed to catch Liu Feng off guard.

Then his expression hardened again.

If this is a trick, I'll kill him.

His gaze returned to the rice.

But if it isn't…

Slowly, he reached out.

His fingers closed around the spoon.

The disciples held their breath.

Liu Feng examined the grains one final time.

Then he lifted the spoon to his lips.

He ate.

The first grain touched his tongue.

And his Qi erupted.

It wasn't a gentle awakening.

It was violent.

A sudden surge of spiritual energy burst from Liu Feng's body, sending the surrounding air into a violent tremor.

His robes snapped in the wind.

The disciples stumbled backwards, raising their arms to shield their faces.

Liu Feng dropped to his knees.

The spoon slipped from his fingers and struck the stone path.

He didn't seem to notice.

Light spread beneath his skin, tracing the pathways of his meridians. His spiritual energy surged through them in uneven waves, as though something that had been trapped for months was finally forcing its way free.

His body shook.

"No…"

His voice was barely audible.

"No, I don't want—"

He pressed one hand against the ground.

The pressure continued building.

Ren Kai watched carefully.

Something was wrong.

The rice had not simply restored Liu Feng's energy. It was interacting with something already inside him, something that had been preventing his cultivation from advancing.

The system's warmth stirred in Ren Kai's chest.

[Ingredient Insight: Spiritual Reaction Detected.]

[Cultivation obstruction responding to Harmonious Foundation.]

[Warning: Host's current understanding insufficient to identify the obstruction.]

Ren Kai's expression tightened.

So that was it.

The rice was doing more than providing nourishment.

It was helping Liu Feng's spiritual energy move through a blockage that ordinary cultivation and pills hadn't been able to overcome.

Liu Feng gasped.

"Make it stop!"

His Qi surged again.

Ren Kai immediately knelt beside him.

"Don't fight it."

Liu Feng looked at him through clenched teeth.

"I won't owe you!"

His voice was raw.

"I won't be in debt to you—to the kitchen boy, to the failure, to—"

"Then don't owe me."

Ren Kai placed a hand on his shoulder.

"Listen to me. I'm not asking you for anything."

Liu Feng's breathing came in ragged bursts.

"Just breathe. Stop trying to force it back."

"I can't!"

"Then stop trying to control everything."

Ren Kai's voice remained steady.

"Let it move."

For a moment, Liu Feng resisted.

His pride fought against the very thing he had spent months trying to achieve.

Then his eyes closed.

His shoulders loosened.

And he let go.

The breakthrough came like a thunderclap.

Spiritual energy exploded outward in a powerful shockwave. Dust scattered across the garden path, and the windows of Elder Yun's pavilion rattled.

The pressure that had bound Liu Feng for six months shattered.

The energy rushed through his meridians, settling into a new, stronger circulation.

Then—

Silence.

The wind died.

The golden light faded.

A final notification appeared in Ren Kai's vision.

[Cultivation Breakthrough Detected.]

Foundation Establishment: Third Layer → Fourth Layer

The disciples stared.

Some trembled.

Others looked at Ren Kai with something close to fear.

A few glanced at the fallen spoon as though it might explode.

Liu Feng remained on his hands and knees, breathing hard.

His shoulders shook.

Not from pain.

Something else.

Slowly, he lifted his head.

"Fourth Layer…"

He stared at his hands.

"I… broke through."

His voice cracked.

For a moment, he didn't look like the arrogant disciple who had tormented Ren Kai for years.

He looked lost.

His eyes were red, and his face was wet.

He had wanted this breakthrough for six months. He had taken pills, practised techniques, and pushed himself until exhaustion.

And in the end, it had come from a spoonful of rice.

He looked up at Ren Kai.

"What are you?"

Ren Kai glanced at the fallen spoon.

He picked it up, wiped away the dust with his sleeve, and tucked it into his robes.

Then he looked back at Liu Feng.

"I'm a cook."

Liu Feng said nothing.

Ren Kai considered the question for another moment.

"And you've been hungry for a long time."

He turned and walked away.

Behind him, the disciples remained frozen.

The quiet chaos began only after he had taken several steps.

Uneven breathing. Shifting feet. Whispered questions.

No one seemed to know what to say.

Ren Kai didn't look back.

At the entrance to Elder Yun's kitchen, he paused.

She stood in the doorway with her arms crossed, watching him.

Her expression was unreadable.

"That was either the wisest thing you've ever done," she said, "or the most foolish."

Ren Kai glanced towards the fading light over the mountains.

"Maybe both."

Elder Yun's lips curved.

"Maybe both."

She stepped aside.

Ren Kai walked into the warmth of the kitchen. The familiar scent of spices and steam wrapped around him, and the sound of bubbling pots greeted him like an old friend.

Behind him, the system chimed.

Rare Ingredient Knowledge.

New Title Acquired: The Cook Who Broke the Bottleneck.

Ren Kai glanced at the title.

"The Cook Who Broke the Bottleneck?"

He wasn't sure whether to be proud or embarrassed.

Elder Yun looked over.

"Something amusing?"

"Nothing."

He dismissed the notification.

His attention was already moving forward.

Liu Feng had broken through.

But Ren Kai had noticed something else.

The rice had responded to an obstruction he hadn't even known existed. His Ingredient Insight had detected the reaction, but it couldn't explain what had caused the blockage in the first place.

There was still so much he didn't understand.

And if a simple bowl of rice could do this—

What else could cooking accomplish?

Ren Kai looked towards the stove.

For the first time, he wasn't wondering whether he could become a cultivator.

He was wondering how far the path of a chef could take him.

What comes next?
