Chapter 9 - Chapter 9 – The Silent Market

The first week of the Guild's ultimatum passed in a blur of fire and flour.

Ren Kai woke earlier each morning, pushing his stove to its limits and cooking batch after batch of Spiritual Rice Bowl until his arms ached and his Qi ran thin.

The line outside his stall began forming before dawn. By midday, it snaked through the alley and into the main market, while the old woman's corner of the courtyard had become so crowded that people were paying copper coins just for a place to stand.

The street children came first, as they always had.

They paid what they could.

A few copper coins. A handful of wild herbs gathered beyond the city walls. Sometimes scraps of information overheard from merchants or market guards.

Ren Kai accepted all of it.

He fed them, watched their cultivation improve, and made sure the youngest received enough to eat. Their small bodies grew stronger, their faces less hollow, and their eyes gradually lost the desperate look of children who expected nothing from tomorrow.

The boy from the first night had become a regular.

He'd eventually told Ren Kai his name was Xiao Liu, though Ren Kai suspected it was probably a lie.

Xiao Liu had reached the third layer of Body Tempering and appointed himself the stall's unofficial guard. He chased away pickpockets, warned off suspicious strangers, and made a habit of glaring at anyone who looked too interested in Ren Kai's business.

He was far too small to intimidate anyone.

That didn't stop him from trying.

Ren Kai found himself saving the best portions of rice for him.

Then came the lower-ranked cultivators.

They were the people the Alchemist Guild rarely bothered with. Body Tempering disciples from minor sects. Qi Gathering mercenaries who lived from one job to the next. Old men and women who had spent decades trapped at cultivation bottlenecks they couldn't afford to overcome.

They arrived with skepticism in their eyes and hunger in their bellies.

Many left with something they had stopped believing was possible.

One woman, her hair streaked with silver and her robes faded from years of travel, ate three bowls in succession.

The third bowl triggered a reaction.

Her Qi surged so violently that the wooden tables rattled. She staggered backward, clutching her chest as the barrier she had struggled against for years finally gave way.

Foundation Establishment.

The woman fell to her knees.

Tears streamed down her face as spiritual energy rolled around her like a storm.

For several seconds, the alley was silent.

Then the crowd erupted.

Some cheered. Others rushed forward, desperate to ask what she had eaten. A few simply stared at Ren Kai as though he had performed some impossible technique.

He only returned to his stove.

There were still customers waiting.

By the third day, the line stretched around the block.

Wealthy merchants sent servants to wait for hours. Minor noble families offered bags of silver for private meals. A representative from the City Lord's estate even appeared, proposing a prime location in the central market in exchange for a permanent contract.

Ren Kai turned them all down.

One bowl per customer.

First come, first served.

No exceptions.

He wasn't interested in allowing wealth to decide who deserved to eat.

The system recorded his progress, though its latest status display still showed the figures from his first week.

[Chef Progress]

Cooking Level: Lv. 12

Chef Rank: Apprentice Chef

Dishes Served: 247

Cultivation: Body Tempering, 9th Layer (Peak)

Chef EXP: 347/500

He was close to the next threshold.

Spiritual Chef.

The first true Chef Rank, according to Elder Yun. The point where he would stop being a curiosity and become a threat.

But there was a problem.

His rice was running out.

The local markets had been stripped of nearly every source of spiritual grain. Farmers who still had supplies had doubled their prices overnight. Ren Kai spent his evenings searching through smaller vendors, buying whatever he could find in limited quantities.

It wasn't enough.

His customers were growing hungrier.

His supplies were growing thinner.

And somewhere in the back of his mind, a clock was ticking.

The Guild had given him an ultimatum.

He had refused.

Sooner or later, they would come to collect their answer.

On the fifth night, a woman came to his stall after closing.

She was old.

Older than Elder Yun, older than anyone Ren Kai could remember seeing. Her face was a map of wrinkles, and her hands were gnarled with age. Yet her eyes were sharp and clear.

The basket she carried made his system stir before she even reached the counter.

"You're the cooking boy," she said, setting it down. "The one who feeds the rats."

Ren Kai's hand moved toward his knife.

"I'm the one who cooks."

The woman laughed. It was a dry, rasping sound without a trace of warmth.

"Semantics. Do you want ingredients or not?"

She lifted the cloth covering the basket.

Ren Kai forgot to breathe.

Inside were things he had only seen in the system's ingredient catalog.

Three stalks of a plant that shimmered like liquid silver.

A small pouch of seeds that pulsed with heat.

And a chunk of dark meat that seemed to absorb the lantern light, its surface shifting like shadows beneath water.

His system flooded his vision with information.

Ren Kai stared at the basket.

These weren't ordinary market ingredients.

Each one was valuable enough to attract the attention of powerful cultivators.

"Where did you get these?"

The old woman settled onto a crate, moving slowly but deliberately.

"I have my ways."

She studied him.

"Though I imagine you have more interesting questions."

Ren Kai looked up.

"Elder Yun sends her regards," she continued. "She said you might need a little help."

The name struck him harder than he expected.

"You know Elder Yun?"

"I know many things."

She reached into the basket and produced a small jar containing something that glowed faintly orange.

"I know the Guild will destroy you if you stay. I know you're too stubborn to leave. And I know you have a gift that hasn't been seen in this city for a hundred years."

She placed the jar on the counter and nudged the basket toward him.

"So. Cook me something, and I'll tell you where to find more."

Ren Kai looked at the ingredients.

Then at his stove.

Then at the old woman's expectant face.

His mind was already working.

The ingredients were rare, but their properties suggested something more interesting than a simple strengthening dish. The Moon-Silver Herb could balance the violent energy of the Flameheart Seeds. The Shadow-Beast Meat offered body refinement and an affinity he hadn't yet explored.

He began arranging the possibilities in his mind.

"What do you want me to cook?"

"Something simple."

She smiled, revealing crooked teeth.

"Something that proves you're worth the trouble."

Her eyes drifted toward the stove.

"And something hot. These old bones get cold at night."

Ren Kai rolled up his sleeves.

He started with the Shadow-Beast Meat.

His knife was sharp, but the meat resisted the blade. Its fibers were dense, almost metallic, and each cut sent a faint vibration through the cutting board.

The system highlighted the grain.

[Skill Activated: Ingredient Insight Lv. 2]

Shadow-Beast Meat:

Cut against the grain for tenderness.

Recommended cooking time: 3 minutes at high heat.

Avoid prolonged exposure to preserve spiritual structure.

Ren Kai adjusted his grip and sliced thin strips.

The meat hummed softly beneath his knife.

Next came the Flameheart Seeds.

He placed them in his mortar and ground them with slow, deliberate strokes. Each time the seeds cracked, a burst of heat escaped, warming his face.

The powder glowed briefly before settling.

By the time he finished, his palms tingled and the air above the mortar shimmered.

The Moon-Silver Herb required a gentler touch.

He kept the leaves whole and washed them carefully in clean water. They unfurled between his fingers, releasing a scent like moonlight on snow—cold, clean, and impossibly distant.

He set his pot over the flame.

Oil went in first.

He waited until it shimmered, then added the meat.

The sear cracked through the alley, sharp and immediate.

Thirty seconds.

He turned the strips.

Another thirty.

The meat darkened, its edges curling as a smoky aroma rose from the pot. It smelled like a forest after rain.

Then came the Flameheart powder.

It dissolved into the oil, turning it a deep, fiery red. The heat intensified. Ren Kai's eyes watered, and his skin prickled.

He could feel the fire-aspected Qi gathering.

Too much, and it would overwhelm the dish.

He steadied his breathing and guided his own Qi through the pot.

The Moon-Silver Herb went in last.

Its leaves wilted against the heat, releasing their cold clarity into the steam.

For a moment, the ingredients fought each other.

Fire pressed against shadow.

Heat collided with the herb's Yin properties.

Ren Kai felt the instability building and adjusted his Qi, gently guiding the energies toward one another.

Not forcing.

Not suppressing.

Balancing.

The tension eased.

The ingredients settled.

He poured the contents into a bowl.

The broth was dark and gleaming. Tender strips of meat rested beneath the surface, while pale leaves floated like stars. Steam curled upward in delicate ribbons of silver and gold.

Ren Kai set it before the old woman.

"Spiced Shadow-Beast Broth."

He stepped back.

"It should help with the cold."

She lifted the bowl.

For a moment, she only smelled it.

Then she drank.

The transformation was immediate.

Her skin flushed. Her hunched back straightened, and the faint aura Ren Kai had barely noticed around her suddenly surged.

The air in the alley grew heavy.

Her cultivation rose like a sleeping beast opening its eyes.

For one terrifying moment, she wasn't an old woman sitting on a crate.

She was something else.

Something powerful.

Something that had been waiting in the dark.

Then the pressure faded.

She lowered the bowl.

When she looked at Ren Kai again, her eyes seemed younger. Sharper.

Hungry.

"You really are one of them."

Ren Kai frowned.

"One of who?"

"The Chefs."

She ran a finger around the rim of the bowl.

"The ones the Guild tried to erase. The ones who cooked meals capable of changing the world."

She reached into her robes and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

"The Silent Market. Beneath the city. You'll find what you need there."

Ren Kai accepted it.

Their fingers brushed.

Her skin was warm.

Warmer than it should have been.

"Who are you?" he asked.

She smiled.

For a brief moment, she looked almost young.

"Call me Granny Spice. Everyone does."

She stood and walked toward the alley entrance.

Her steps were quicker now, and her shadow pooled behind her like spilled ink.

"Granny Spice."

She paused.

"The Guild is watching me. If I go to this market—"

"The Guild has already sent word to the regional headquarters."

Her expression darkened.

"The next person they send won't be some boy playing alchemist. It'll be someone who doesn't offer warnings."

She looked directly at him.

For the first time, Ren Kai thought he saw fear in her eyes.

"Cook faster. Get stronger. And for the ancestors' sake, don't trust anyone who offers you an easy way out."

Then she disappeared into the darkness.

Ren Kai stood alone.

The map remained in his hand, and the scent of the broth lingered in the air.

He unfolded the paper.

THE SILENT MARKET

Location: Beneath Maplewood City.

Entrance: The old well in the abandoned quarter.

Below the directions, in elegant script, were five words.

Bring your knife. And your hunger.

He folded the paper and tucked it into his robes.

Then he looked at his stove.

His nearly empty rice sack.

The long line of customers he expected to find waiting at dawn.

The Guild's ultimatum was still hanging over him.

He had work to do.

The market district was quiet at midnight.

Ren Kai moved through the shadows, surprised by how much more he could perceive than he could only a few weeks earlier.

His Body Tempering senses picked out the breathing of sleeping guards, the flicker of distant lanterns, and the soft scurrying of rats in the gutters.

The folded map rested in his pocket.

He had memorized its directions.

The old well was exactly where Granny Spice had said it would be.

A crumbling stone structure in a forgotten corner of the abandoned quarter, half-hidden by weeds and decades of neglect.

At first glance, it looked like nothing.

A relic.

A dead end.

Ren Kai approached and peered over the edge.

Light.

Faint and pulsing, far below.

And beneath it, the murmur of voices.

He leaned closer.

Haggling.

Laughter.

Arguments.

The sounds of a market.

He found an old rope ladder secured to a stone hook and tested its strength.

It creaked but held.

Ren Kai descended carefully, the walls of the well closing around him as the light grew brighter.

The voices gradually became clearer.

So did the smells.

Spices that made his head swim.

Herbs that burned his nose.

Something sweet and cloying that might have been incense.

Or poison.

He reached the bottom and stepped through a narrow passage.

The world opened around him.

The Silent Market wasn't silent at all.

It was a cavern carved into the bedrock beneath the city. Stalls lined its walls, illuminated by spirit lamps that cast shifting colors across the stone.

Merchants shouted their wares.

Beast cores pulsed with trapped lightning. Pills promised immortality, enlightenment, or madness. Weapons whispered to anyone who approached too closely.

The air was thick with Qi.

Ren Kai felt it pressing against his skin.

His system erupted with discoveries.

[Ingredient Insight: Mass Detection]

Spirit-grade Ingredients Detected: 47

Earth-grade Ingredients Detected: 8

Heaven-grade Ingredients Detected: 1

Source: Unknown.

Ren Kai stopped breathing.

Heaven-grade.

He hadn't even known there were Heaven-grade ingredients in this region.

His instincts urged him to search for the source, but he forced himself to look away.

He wasn't here to chase rare treasures.

He was here because his stall was running out of rice.

Survival first.

Curiosity later.

He moved deeper into the market.

The stall he eventually found was run by a woman who looked more beast than human.

Her skin was covered in fine scales, her pupils were vertical, and a tail twitched lazily behind her counter.

Monster parts covered the stall.

Claws.

Fangs.

Hides.

Beast cores.

And, displayed prominently in the center, a thick piece of meat that made his system stir.

"Shadow Panther," the woman said, noticing his gaze. "Killed it myself. High-grade meat. Still fresh."

Ren Kai approached.

The system confirmed the properties.

[Ingredient Insight: Shadow Panther Meat — Spirit Grade]

Spiritual Energy Density: Extremely High.

Effects:

Agility enhancement.

Improved night vision.

Minor stealth affinity.

Hidden Property:

When combined with Flameheart Seeds, creates a temporary fire-shadow fusion effect.

Ren Kai examined the meat.

"How much?"

The woman named her price.

His stomach tightened.

He had barely a tenth of it.

But he had something else.

He reached into his robes and removed a small jar.

The last portion of his Blazing Rice Bowl, carefully preserved using a technique Elder Yun had taught him.

"I can't pay in silver."

He placed the jar on the counter.

"But I can pay with this."

He opened it.

The aroma rose gently into the air.

Golden spiritual rice, infused with Fire-Aspected Chili.

The beast-woman's nostrils flared.

She leaned forward and inhaled.

Her eyes widened.

"This is..."

"Cooking cultivation."

She stared at him.

"Yes."

For a moment, she said nothing.

Then she laughed, a sharp barking sound that drew the attention of several nearby merchants.

"You're the one the Guild is hunting."

Ren Kai remained still.

"The street-stall boy."

"I'm the one who cooks."

She closed the jar and tucked it beneath her counter.

"Deal. The meat for the rice."

She began wrapping the Shadow Panther meat, then reached beneath the stall and added several small packets of spices.

"Take these too. On the house."

She leaned closer.

"Anyone who makes the Guild angry is a friend of mine."

Ren Kai accepted the package.

"Thank you."

"Don't thank me yet. And don't tell anyone where you got it."

He nodded and turned to leave.

He had barely taken three steps when a hand closed around his arm.

"You shouldn't be here."

The voice was low and urgent.

Ren Kai turned.

A man in gray robes stood beside him, his face hidden beneath a hood. Despite his apparent age, his grip was surprisingly strong.

"The Guild has spies everywhere," the man hissed. "They're looking for you. If they find you here—"

"Let go of me."

The grip tightened.

"You don't understand. They've already sent word to the regional headquarters. They're not going to let you leave this city. They're not going to let you—"

Ren Kai's Qi flared.

The man's hand jerked back as though burned.

For a fraction of a second, the hood slipped.

Ren Kai saw his face.

He knew it.

Wei Chen.

The alchemist's eyes widened.

For a moment, his composure shattered. He looked less like a powerful cultivator and more like a man who had just realized he had made a terrible mistake.

Then the mask returned.

"Run, boy," he said softly.

His voice had changed.

"While you still can."

He turned and melted into the crowd.

Ren Kai stood motionless.

His heart pounded.

His hand rested against the knife at his waist.

The beast-woman was already packing her stall.

"You heard him," she said without looking up.

Ren Kai turned toward her.

"Run."

He didn't argue.

He ran.

He burst out of the well into the night air, gasping.

His legs carried him through the empty streets, past shuttered shops and sleeping courtyards. He didn't slow until he reached his alley, pushed through the entrance, and secured the lock behind him.

Only then did he stop.

His lungs burned.

His hands shook.

He leaned against the cart and tried to steady his breathing.

Wei Chen had been in the Silent Market.

Watching.

Waiting.

And the Guild had already contacted its regional headquarters.

This was no longer a local dispute over a few lost customers.

The Guild was mobilizing.

Ren Kai looked down at the package beside him.

The Shadow Panther meat.

The spices.

The ingredients he had traded for.

Then he looked at the nearly empty rice sack.

For the first time in days, he felt something close to relief.

He had ingredients now.

Real ingredients.

Enough to attempt something far beyond his usual Spiritual Rice Bowl.

He just needed time.

His fingers brushed the jade token Elder Yun had given him.

It was warm against his chest.

A faint light pulsed beneath his robes.

Still warm.

The Guild hadn't found him.

Not yet.

Ren Kai looked toward the entrance of the alley.

He thought of Xiao Liu.

The children.

The old cultivators who had come to his stall believing they had no future.

He thought of Granny Spice, who had risked contacting him.

And of Wei Chen's expression when their eyes met.

He wasn't ready to fight the Alchemist Guild.

Not yet.

But he could cook.

And he could get stronger.

Ren Kai pulled out the Shadow Panther meat and placed it on the cutting board.

"I'm not running," he said to the empty cart.

Then he lit the stove.

And began to cook.
