The sky was bright. The gentle warmth of the sun hit the grounds of Musutafu Elementary, while a young boy sat inside his classroom. At the ripe age of 5, Ren and a few of his classmates were the late bloomers. Having been told they weren't Quirkless, they waited eagerly for their Quirks. Today, another got their Quirk. "Look, look! I can float the pencil!" A girl cheered. Telekinesis was uncommon, but not rare. Ren smiled for his friend. "Ema! That's so cool!" Ren giggled, and as the teacher called recess, Ren chased Ema outside, along with another boy. "Tag!" Ren grinned as he tagged Ema. "No tagbacks, Ema!" The other boy shouted. "We know, Kon." Ema whined at Kon's constant repeating of the rule, and bolted at him. "You'll never catch me alive!" Kon cackled like a Villain, and tripped on a rock. "Umpf!" He grumbled as he got up, only to be tagged by Ema. "Tag. You're it~" Ema sung, and then bolted.

For the last hour of school, Kon tried and failed to catch Ren. "Haha! You'll never catch me alive! My papa is a hero!" Ren cackled. Just as the bell was about to ring, Kon tagged Ren. "Tag~" Ren grumbled and bolted, but slowed to a stop as the bell rang. He looked up, seeing his older brother perched on a power pole. His metal bracers reflected in the sunlight, his grey vest a system of ceramic plates, segmented with his motor function. A black compression suit under his armor, visible through the gaps in the joints. "You big showoff, Sato!" Ren grumbled as Sato slid down the pole, approaching the group. "You three have fun?" He smiled. "Yeah! Ren sucks at tag!" Kon laughed, to which Ren grumbled at his near non-existent loss.

"Well, I have to bring Ren home real quick. Have a good day, you two!" Sato pulled Ren along. Ren looked up at Sato. "Can I go on patrol with you?" Sato sighed. "Ren, for the fifteenth time this week, I can't bring you on patrol. It's very dangerous, and very illegal." Ren pouted as Sato put him in the car. Sato spoke as he fastened Ren's seatbelt. "With mom as a nurse, dad as a pro, and myself as a pro, it's still barely enough, okay? I can't put you at risk." Sato patted Ren as he closed the door. Ren spoke up as Sato sat in the driver's seat. "But you're a search and rescue hero! Why are you so busy?" The low hum of the engine's startup rumbled as Sato turned the key. "Because, Ren, for every fight between assault heroes, there's many people who are in danger. That's why I'm so much busier than dad, I have more people to save. Now put your seatbelt on." Sato commanded. Ren was silent for the rest of the car ride.

Sato slowed the car to a stop. An old, run down housing complex shaded the car. "Okay, go in now. I have an assignment to get to." Ren opened the door, and grumbled under his breath as he gently shut it. Sato drove off. As Ren stormed off, he put on his bag, and with that motion, a puddle from last night's rain subtly rippled. His anger turned to giddy joy as he noticed his Quirk's sudden existence. He took a glance, and saw that Sato wasn't in view. More importantly, he wasn't in Sato's view. He bolted past the housing complex, heading for a friend's home.

Sato arrived at a recently ended fight against two C-list villains. He showed one of the perimeter's officers his Hero License, and they let him through. He gently shut his eyes. With every step, he felt a ripple. The flow of blood, a small, echoing signal, especially potent in a panicking child, hit his senses. He ran to a pile of rubble, signaling to the stronger heroes on site. That was the routine, after all. Sense trapped or in danger civilians, signal to a better hero, and do nothing else.

"Wait up, kiddo." A gruff voice called to Sato as he approached his car. Upon turning, Sato saw an older man. He seemed to be some form of bodybuilder. The guy was huge, maybe 6'8" compared to Sato's 5'7". He was shredded, his hero suit showed his entire midline until the bottom of his abdomen. "How does your Quirk work?" The man inquired. Sato shook his head. He was hoping he wouldn't have to explain this, but he obliged. "I can sense nearby water." Sato informed the stranger. The older man blinked, scratching his beard. "Sense.. water? How does that let you sense people?" Sato looked at the man. To Sato, it was blatantly obvious. "People are mostly water, sir." Sato said simply, a slight twitch in his left eye. He never understood why people asked that, and in all likelihood, that would never change. The older man facepalmed at this. It did sound obvious once you heard it. "Right. That... makes sense, actually. Thank you for your work, kiddo. What's your name?" The older man handed him a business card. Sato looked at the man. "Dead Calm Hero, Satomori. I didn't really think the name through." Sato looked down at the card.

"Death Arms." Sato parroted what it said. "Sounds like you got it from an anime." Sato joked, though he still pocketed the business card. The guy was significantly higher in the hero hierarchy than he was, and connections never hurt. Especially since this guy's speciality completely covered Sato's own lack of strength. Sato said his temporary farewells to Death Arms, and drove home in his car.

Ren ran home from his friend's house. He was so excited about his new Quirk that he forgot Ema wasn't even home until later. If he was late for dinner, he wouldn't be eating.

Ren ran throughout the hallway of his housing complex. He was so excited about this. Excitedly, he opens the door, a sweet and savory scent painting the air of his home. Forgetting why he was so excited, he slips off his shoes. With an exclamation of, "Tadaima!" A small girl's voice echoed back. "Okaeri!" He grins wide as his Shiba greets him. "Mochi! You didn't get caught today, did you?" Mochi barked and panted happily as Ren ran the back of his fingers through her sandy fur. Following the scent of omourice, Ren comes to the table, sitting as his father's plate is served. The crack of Jun's favorite beer sounded. "Tousan, can I try nodogoshi..?" To this, his father just looks at him, and Ren looks away. Turning his gaze to his mother, Ren smiles. "Kaasan, thank you for the food." Ren mannered, his mother's onyx hair waving messily over her face. She smiles silently as she serves Sato his plate.

"Kaasan, why does Sato get food before me?" Ren asked, half-whining. His mother doesn't answer, and instead takes the beer from the father. "Jun, you know there is no alcohol at the table." The father looks at her. "Himari, I..." He stops short at Himari's glare, a bead of sweat running down his face. "You're right! What was I thinking?" Jun chuckled nervously, and turned to the table. Himari serves Ren, who grins at the sight. "Thank you, kaasan!" Ren smiled. Himari turned to his younger sister. "Mei, did anyone catch Mochi?" Mei shook her head. "Mochi safe. Nobody see." Mei informed with her barely formed speech. Himari let out a breath she hadn't realized existed. They weren't supposed to have a dog as large as Mochi in their home, and they absolutely could not afford eviction. The Hero Union didn't pay much of anything to the heroes in the lower class areas, and even less to Search and Rescue heroes like Sato. Sitting down herself, Himari and her family dug in.

"Oh right! I got my Quirk--" Ren started, mouth full of curry, but stopped short as he felt the familiar fur of Mochi hit his ankle. "Oh, Mochi, don't bump..." He cut short once more at the sight of puddled gore mixed with fur. Mochi's head slowed to a stop, rolling from her body. "Mochi...?" Ren felt his stomach coil.

squelch.

He turned to his father, whose body split in two. The iron virulence of blood; a warm, metallic air, choked the room. Ren's stomach coiled. He gripped his mouth and gut, but couldn't hold in his bile. The copper stench was mixed with the stench of rice vomit. Himari screeched, and Mei gripped Ren's sleeve tight. Himari's screeches were cut short as she stopped breathing. Her nose bled. Himari thudded lifelessly. Mei screeched and bolted. The only sound to Mei was a dull ringing as her vision blurred and trembled. She didn't even notice that she crashed into an unfamiliar figure. Her head inflated like a balloon and popped. The walls were painted a darker, thicker red than the curry.

Ren couldn't think. He vomited. He didn't ask why, nor did he ask anything. He couldn't think. He could barely breathe. His bile mixed with what used to be Mochi, and he collapsed, his hair stained with the bile infested, gory puddle of an innocent shiba inu.
