Chapter 91 - The Third Line

Twelve days of marching after the second line fell.

Twelve days of healing, planning, dreading. The army moved slower now—not from weakness, but from weight. Every step carried the memory of those we'd lost.

The third line appeared on the horizon at dusk.

Different from the others. Not fortifications. Not forest. Nothing.

A vast plain stretched before us—empty, silent, wrong. No grass. No life. Just grey earth stretching to infinity.

Oracle studied it with ancient eyes.

"This is where he makes his stand. The first immortal's final defense before his fortress."

Theron frowned. "I don't see anything."

"That's the point." Selene's voice was cold. "It's a killing field. Open ground, no cover, nowhere to hide."

Darius cracked his neck. "Then we don't hide. We charge."

"And die." Lyra's voice was sharp. "Look closer."

She magnified the view. Across the plain, barely visible, shapes moved. Thousands of them. Immortals. Soldiers. Things.

Valdur rumbled, "How many?"

"Too many. Maybe fifty thousand. Maybe more."

Silence settled over the council.

Then Cassian spoke. "I know this place. It's called the Field of Final Stands. The Network has used it three times in its history. Each time, the attackers were annihilated."

"Then we'll be the first to survive."

All eyes turned to me.

I looked at the field. At the army behind me. At the woman beside me.

"We don't fight fair. We never have."

Theron grinned. "What's the plan?"

The Strategy

We spent two days planning.

Lyra mapped every approach. Oracle searched for hidden paths. Cassian recalled every detail from Network records.

The plan that emerged was desperate.

Phase one: Diversions. Small teams hit multiple points along the line, drawing defenders away from the center.

Phase two: The main force advances through the gap—fast, hard, relentless.

Phase three: Gods engage their immortals directly. No holding back.

Phase four: Break through. Reach the fortress.

"Who leads the diversions?" Darius asked.

"I do." Theron stepped forward. "With Solara. Storms and light—they'll think we're the main attack."

Solara nodded. "We'll draw their strongest."

Selene moved beside them. "I'll go too. Cold will confuse them further."

Ignis joined. "Fire to match their fear."

Noctis melted from shadows. "And shadows to hide the real attack."

Four gods leading diversions. Eight holding the main force.

Mei Lian and I would be in the center—wherever we were needed most.

Darius studied the plan. "It's insane."

"It's war."

He grinned. "Good answer."

The Night Before

I walked among the army that night.

Soldiers from a hundred worlds—some I'd fought beside for years, some I'd never met. They looked at me with hope in their eyes. Hope I'd put there. Hope I prayed I deserved.

A young woman stopped me. Human, probably from Earth. She couldn't have been more than eighteen.

"Ren."

I stopped. "Yes?"

"I just wanted to say... thank you. For everything." Tears filled her eyes. "My world—Earth—it would have fallen without you. Without this alliance. My family would be dead."

I didn't know what to say.

She hugged me. Brief, fierce, real.

Then she walked back to her unit.

Mei Lian found me standing there, frozen.

"You okay?"

"Just... remembering why we fight."

She took my hand. Squeezed.

"Don't forget."

The Gods' Vigil

They gathered separately that night—twelve beings of immense power, preparing for what might be their last battle.

Mira spoke first. "We've come far. Farther than any of us dreamed possible."

Valdur nodded. "Centuries alone. Now we stand together."

Selene's voice was soft—for her. "I never thought I'd fight beside any of you again."

Theron smiled. "Neither did I. But here we are."

Solara leaned against him. "Here we are."

Noctis emerged from shadows. "Whatever happens tomorrow—thank you. For accepting me."

Lira touched his arm. "You're one of us. Always were."

Ignis's flames flickered warmly. "We burn together. Or we don't burn at all."

Aric smiled. "Wisdom from a fire god. Who knew?"

Laughter—quiet, genuine, human.

Terra's deep voice rumbled. "I've watched mountains rise and fall. Civilizations born and die. But this—" She looked at them. "—this is something new. Something precious."

Nereus nodded. "The depths have never seen such unity."

Oracle spoke last. "I've seen countless futures. Most were dark. But this one—" She smiled. "—this one has hope."

Mira raised her hand. "To tomorrow. To battle. To each other."

They joined hands.

And for the first time in millennia, twelve gods prayed together.

---

Dawn

Light spread across the plain like a promise.

The army formed ranks—a hundred thousand souls, ready to charge into hell. Darius at the front, fire blazing. Vera with her mages, silent and deadly. Lyra coordinating from the rear, every contingency planned.

Sarah's Earth forces provided air support—drones and aircraft unlike anything the Network had seen.

And at the center, the gods gathered.

Theron, Solara, Selene, Ignis, Noctis—ready to lead the diversions.

Valdur, Lira, Aric, Terra, Nereus, Oracle, Mira—holding the main force.

Cassian stood with the mortals now, accepted fully.

Mei Lian's hand found mine.

"Scared?"

"Terrified."

"Good. Me too."

I raised my arm.

The army watched.

"For every world they've destroyed. For every life they've taken. For every hope they've crushed—" My voice carried across the plain. "—we fight. We win. We live."

Cheers erupted.

I dropped my arm.

"CHARGE!"
