Seven days of marching.
Seven days of carrying our dead, tending our wounded, preparing for what came next. The army moved like a wounded beast—slower than before, but more dangerous. Loss had sharpened us.
The second line appeared on the horizon at dawn.
Different from the first. Not fortifications—forest. An endless expanse of twisted trees, creeping vines, wrongness. It radiated malice.
Oracle studied it from a distance, her ancient face troubled.
"This is not natural. The Network grew this—used corrupted magic to create a living defense."
Theron's storms flickered. "Can we burn it?"
"Fire will spread. Kill us as easily as them." Selene's cold sharpened. "We need another way."
Cassian stepped forward. "I know this place. It's called the Verdant Maw. The Network uses it to break armies—splits them up, picks them off, drives them mad."
"How do we get through?"
"You don't. You go under."
---
The Plan
Cassian spread maps across a makeshift table.
"There are tunnels beneath the forest. Ancient—older than the Network. They used them for supply lines, but they've been abandoned for centuries."
Nereus studied the maps. "Underground. Dark. Damp. My domain."
"Can you guide us through?" I asked.
"I can try. But the tunnels will be unstable. And they won't be empty."
Noctis nodded. "Shadows will help. But something lives down there. Something old."
Selene's voice was cold. "Then we face it together."
We spent the next day preparing.
Nereus would lead, his connection to depths guiding us. Noctis would provide cover. Selene would stabilize tunnels with cold. Ignis would provide light when needed.
The main army would wait above, ready to strike when we emerged.
Mei Lian and I would go with the tunnel team.
Darius argued. Lost.
"You're needed here," I told him. "If we fail, the army needs you."
He wasn't happy. But he understood.
---
The Descent
The tunnel entrance was hidden beneath ancient roots.
We descended into darkness—Nereus first, then Selene, then Noctis, then Ignis, then me and Mei Lian. The air grew thick, heavy, wrong.
Nereus's voice echoed. "These tunnels haven't been used in millennia. The Network forgot them. But something else remembers."
Noctis's shadows flickered. "I feel it. Watching."
Selene's cold spread, stabilizing walls. "Keep moving."
We walked for hours. Maybe days. Time had no meaning in the dark.
---
The Creatures
They found us first.
Not Network—something older. Creatures of shadow and hunger, born from the corrupted magic that had grown the forest above. They emerged from walls, from floor, from everywhere.
Noctis met them with shadows of his own.
Selene froze them mid-lunge.
Ignis burned those that got too close.
Nereus guided us through, always moving, never stopping.
Mei Lian and I fought at the rear, bond blazing, protecting the group from anything that slipped through.
They kept coming.
We kept moving.
---
The Cavern
We emerged into a vast cavern—natural, but wrong. Bioluminescent fungi covered every surface, casting sickly green light. A lake of black water sat at its center, perfectly still.
Nereus approached the water. Stopped.
"Something's here. Beneath."
The water erupted.
A creature rose—massive, ancient, terrible. It had no shape, no form, just presence. Corruption given flesh.
"I am the Maw," it whispered. "You may not pass."
Selene's cold sharpened. "We have no quarrel with you."
"You carry blessings. Gods' power. You seek to end the Network." The Maw's voice was everywhere. "I was born from Network magic. If they fall, I fall."
"Then you'll fight for them?"
"I'll fight for me."
It attacked.
---
The Battle
The Maw was unlike anything we'd faced.
Not physical—not entirely. It attacked minds, memories, hope. Each of us saw our worst fears, our deepest griefs, our most desperate moments.
I saw Theo fall. Saw Mira's magic fade. Saw the four worlds burn.
Mei Lian saw me die.
Selene saw her sister's final moments.
Ignis saw his forges cold and empty.
Noctis saw the shadows consume him.
Nereus saw his city fall again.
But we fought through it.
Together.
Selene's cold found purchase—the Maw hated cold. Ignis's fire burned its corruption. Noctis's shadows wrapped around it, holding it still. Nereus's depths pulled at its foundation.
And Mei Lian and I struck together, bond blazing, twelve blessings singing.
The Maw screamed.
And fell.
---
The Ascent
We emerged from the tunnels at dawn.
The forest behind us was dying—the Maw's fall breaking its connection to corrupted magic. Trees crumbled. Vines withered. The second line collapsed without a fight.
Darius met us at the edge, relief flooding his face.
"You're alive!"
"We're alive." I looked back at the dying forest. "The second line is gone."
"Just like that?"
"Just like that."
He stared at me. Then at the others. Then laughed—relieved, amazed, hopeful.
"One more line. Then his fortress."
I nodded.
"One more line."
---
The Cost
We lost people in the tunnels.
Not many—the Maw had focused on us, leaving the main army untouched. But the soldiers who'd followed us in... some hadn't come out.
We held a small ceremony that night. Names spoken. Faces remembered. Promises made.
Mei Lian held my hand through all of it.
"They knew the risks," she said quietly.
"That doesn't make it easier."
"No. But it makes it matter."
I looked at the stars—at worlds I'd never see, lives I'd never touch.
Two hundred fifty days left.
We were running out of time.
---
The Vigil
That night, I found Cassian alone, staring at the locket.
"Thinking about her again?"
"Always." He didn't turn. "I dreamed of her last night. Elara. She was young again, beautiful, alive. She smiled at me."
"That's good, right?"
"It's torture." He finally turned. "Because every time I wake, I remember she's gone. That I'll never see her again."
I sat beside him. "I know that feeling. Every time I close my eyes, I see the people I've lost. Theo. The four worlds. Everyone."
"How do you bear it?"
"By remembering why I fight. By holding onto the people still here." I touched my chest, where Mei Lian's bond hummed. "By loving as hard as I can, for as long as I can."
Cassian was quiet for a long moment.
Then, slowly, he smiled.
"You're wiser than you look."
"Comes with near-death experiences. Lots of them."
He laughed—real, surprised, human.
"Thank you, Ren."
"For what?"
"For reminding me what it means to be alive."
---
The Road Ahead
Dawn found us marching again.
One line remained. Then the fortress. Then the first immortal.
Cassian walked beside me now, accepted fully. Selene's cold had softened—just slightly. Theron's storms were calm.
Mei Lian held my hand.
"Scared?" she asked.
"Always."
"Good. Me too."
We marched toward the final line.
Toward everything.
