Surface – Darius's Assault
The moment the alarms sounded, Darius moved.
Four hundred fighters hit the fortress walls from every direction. Chains veterans. Echoes mages. Glass survivors who'd refused to wait. They came with fire and fury and years of rage.
The Network was ready. Barely.
Darius led from the front—fire blazing, fists crushing, voice roaring. He killed a dozen immortals in the first minute. Twenty in the first hour.
His people followed. Died. Kept coming.
By the time Vera emerged with the first wave of prisoners, the outer walls had fallen.
---
The Upper Levels
Vera moved through chaos like vengeance given form.
Sound-mage techniques disabled groups of soldiers. Blades killed anyone who got close. She'd been a slave once. She'd never be one again—and she'd die before letting anyone else suffer that fate.
She found children first. Huddled in a corner. Terrified.
"Come with me. I'm taking you home."
They followed.
She found families next. Then groups. Then hundreds. Each time, she led them toward the surface, toward Darius's lines, toward freedom.
Each time, she went back for more.
---
The Bond
I felt it through Mei Lian—Darius's rage, Vera's determination, Lyra's desperate coordination. The bond had grown stronger since Level 50. Now it connected me to all of them, faintly, distantly.
I also felt something else.
The Network commander. Not dead—not fully. He'd escaped the control room during the fight. Fled somewhere deeper.
"Mei Lian. He's still alive."
She nodded. "I feel it too."
We followed.
---
The Final Chamber
He waited in the deepest level. Surrounded by machines. Surrounded by prisoners.
"You killed my body," he said. "But here—" He gestured at the machines. "—here, I have dozens. Hundreds. Every prisoner fuels me. Every death makes me stronger."
I looked at the prisoners. Glass people. Children. Old. Weak. Terrified.
"We're ending this. Now."
He laughed. "You can't kill me here. Too many connections. Too many lives intertwined. Kill me, you kill them."
Mei Lian's hand found mine.
"Together?"
"Together."
We moved.
---
The Choice
We could fight him—destroy him—and risk the prisoners.
Or we could try something else.
The bond pulsed. Mei Lian's thought: Separate him from the machines.
How?
Your World Walker ability. You can draw power from other worlds. Pull him away from this one.
It might kill me.
I know.
We looked at each other. A lifetime in one moment.
"Do it," she said.
I did.
---
The Pull
World Walker power activated. I reached beyond this world, beyond this reality, into the void between.
And I pulled.
The commander screamed. His connection to the machines stretched. Strained. Broke.
He flew toward me—toward the void I'd opened—body dissolving, power fading, immortality meaning nothing.
"You can't—this will kill you too—"
"Probably."
I pulled harder.
---
The Cost
When it ended, he was gone.
I collapsed.
Mei Lian caught me. Held me. The bond blazed with her terror, her love, her desperation.
"Ren. Ren, stay with me. Please."
I looked at her. Smiled.
"Did we win?"
"We won. The prisoners are free. The fortress is ours. Darius is on the surface killing everything. Vera's leading people out." Tears streamed down her face. "We won."
"Good." My vision blurred. "That's good."
"Don't you dare leave me. Not now. Not after everything."
I wanted to promise. Wanted to tell her I'd stay forever.
But the void was pulling. Soft. Gentle. Tempting.
Rest, it whispered. You've earned it.
"Mei Lian..."
"Don't. Don't you—"
The bond flared. She poured everything into it—her power, her love, her will. Pulled me back from the edge.
I gasped. Lungs filling. Heart beating. Alive.
"You idiot," she sobbed. "You absolute idiot."
I held her. Shaking. Breathing. Here.
"Together," I whispered.
"Together."
---
Surface – Dawn
We emerged as light broke over the fortress.
Prisoners streamed past—thousands of them, free at last. Darius stood at the gate, directing survivors, killing any Network remnants who approached. Vera moved among the wounded, organizing care, giving hope.
Lyra's voice crackled through the comm: "All hostiles neutralized. Prisoner count... fifteen thousand. We got everyone."
I leaned on Mei Lian. Exhausted. Broken. Alive.
"We did it."
She kissed me. Soft. Tender. Real.
"We did it."

Epilogue – One Month Later
Theo and Mira's wedding.
Small ceremony. Simple village. Perfect weather.
We stood in the back—me, Mei Lian, Darius, Vera, Lyra, Sarah (who'd traveled from Earth for the first time). Watching two people who'd earned their happiness finally claim it.
Mira walked down the aisle on Theo's arm—she supported him, always, but today he stood tall. Stronger than anyone expected.
Theo cried when he saw her.
She cried when she reached him.
They spoke vows. Simple words. True words.
When they kissed, everyone cheered.
Darius pretended not to cry. Failed spectacularly.
Vera laughed—real laugh, first in months.
Lyra recorded everything. "For posterity," she said. Really, she just wanted to remember.
Mei Lian held my hand. Squeezed.
"Think we'll ever have that?"
I looked at her. At the woman who'd pulled me back from death. Who'd fought beside me through everything. Who'd loved me when I couldn't love myself.
"Yeah. Someday."
She smiled. Leaned against me.
"Someday."
