Dawn came cold and clear.
I stood at the ruins' edge, watching light spread across an alien sky. Behind me, my team gathered. Seventy-eight survivors from the final stand. The best of the best. The ones who'd lived when so many died.
We'd spent three weeks healing. Grieving. Planning.
Now it was time.
"Today, we free Glass."
Darius cracked his neck. "Finally."
Vera checked her weapons—blades that channeled sound, forged in Echoes, designed for silent killing. Her eyes held the cold focus of someone who'd been a slave once. Who'd never let it happen again.
Lyra had the intelligence. Three weeks of nonstop work had paid off—Network stronghold location, guard rotations, hostage positions, escape routes. She spread holos in the air for everyone to see.
"The hostages are held here." She pointed at a massive structure—a prison-fortress on a dead world. "Ten thousand people from Glass. Plus prisoners from other worlds. Total maybe fifteen thousand."
"Guards?" Mei Lian asked.
"Three hundred Network remnants. Wounded from the battle, but still dangerous. Plus automated defenses. Plus their commander—someone new. Someone we haven't faced before."
Darius snorted. "Someone new to kill."
I studied the schematics. The fortress was designed to repel assault. Walls. Traps. Kill zones. A direct attack would cost hundreds of lives—lives we didn't have.
"We don't fight fair," I said. "We never have."
Vera looked at me. "What's the plan?"
I pointed at the schematics.
"Lyra found something. A weakness. The fortress was built over an old Network facility—abandoned, forgotten. There's a tunnel network beneath. Ancient. Unused."
"Infiltration," Mei Lian said.
"Infiltration. Small team. We go in quiet, free as many as we can, create chaos from inside. While they're distracted, the main force hits the walls."
Darius grinned. "Classic."
"Who goes in?" Vera asked.
I looked at my team. At the people I trusted most.
"Me. Mei Lian. Vera. You know their tech, their tactics, their weaknesses. Darius leads the main force—when the signal comes, you hit hard."
"And me?" Lyra asked.
"You coordinate. You're our eyes. Without you, we're blind."
She nodded. Accepting. Determined.

The Descent
The tunnel entrance was hidden beneath three feet of rock and rust.
We dug by hand—couldn't risk magic detection. Vera's sound-mage abilities helped locate hollow spaces. Mei Lian's Eastern training made her movements silent, efficient. The bond kept us connected without words.
Two hours of digging. Then breakthrough.
Ancient corridors stretched before us. Dark. Cold. Humming with residual energy from centuries of Network occupation.
Vera touched the walls. "This place... I can feel them. The ones who suffered here."
"Focus." Mei Lian's voice gentle but firm. "We're here for the living."
Vera nodded. Pushed forward.
We moved through darkness.
---
The First Guard Post
Four immortals. Twelve soldiers. Guarding a junction.
Vera gestured. Sound-mage technique—she created a bubble of silence around us. They couldn't hear us coming.
Mei Lian and I moved first.
The bond made us lethal. We struck together—her staff, my blade—killing two immortals before they knew we existed. Vera took the third with a sound-blade that ruptured his insides without a sound.
The fourth turned. Opened his mouth to scream.
I was faster. Hand over his mouth. Blade through his heart.
Twelve soldiers died in the next thirty seconds. Silent. Efficient. Merciless.
When it was done, we stood among bodies, breathing hard.
"First checkpoint cleared," I whispered into the comm. "Moving deeper."
Lyra's voice: "Confirmed. Next junction, fifty meters. Eight immortals. Twenty soldiers."
We moved.
---
The Prison Level
Two hours of fighting. Silent killing. Moving deeper.
We'd killed thirty immortals. A hundred soldiers. Left bodies in every corridor.
Then we found them.
The prisoners.
Thousands of them. Glass world survivors—families, children, elderly—packed into massive cells. Starving. Terrified. Broken.
A woman saw us. Grabbed the bars. Opened her mouth to speak.
Vera pressed a finger to her lips. "Quiet. We're here to free you."
The woman's eyes filled with tears.
"How many?" I asked.
"T-ten thousand. They take people every day. For experiments. For... for things I can't describe."
My blood boiled.
"Where?"
"The lower levels. Below the prison. There's a facility—"
Alarms screamed.

Chaos
The Network hit us hard.
Immortals poured from every corridor. Soldiers swarmed. Automated defenses activated—energy weapons, traps, horrors we hadn't anticipated.
Mei Lian fought beside me, bond blazing. Vera used sound-mage techniques to disable groups at once. We killed. Killed. Killed.
But there were too many.
"We need to split," Vera shouted. "I'll lead prisoners up. You two go down—stop the experiments. Free the rest."
"Vera—"
"I was them once. I know what happens down there." She grabbed my arm. "Go. I'll get these people out."
I looked at her. At Mei Lian. At the thousands depending on us.
"Signal Darius. Tell him to hit the walls now."
Vera nodded.
We ran.
---
Down
The lower levels were worse.
Torture chambers. Experiment rooms. Bodies—some alive, some not. Glass world people strapped to tables, connected to machines, screaming silently.
Mei Lian stopped. Stared. Hand over her mouth.
I pulled her forward. "Can't stop. Can't look. Keep moving."
She nodded. Kept moving.
We found the control room at the bottom.
Twenty immortals. One commander. And a machine—massive, pulsing, connected to every cell in the facility.
The commander turned as we entered. Old. Cruel. Smiling.
"The famous Ren. I was hoping you'd come."
I raised my hands. "Release the prisoners."
"Or what? You'll kill me? I've been killed before." He laughed. "I always come back."
I stepped forward. "Not from me."
The bond flared. Mei Lian moved with me.
We killed them all.
---
The Machine
It hummed with stolen life. Thousands of souls feeding Network power.
I raised my hands. Fire. Water. Steam. Everything I had.
Mei Lian added her power—Eastern techniques, pure and focused.
Together, we shattered it.
The machine screamed. Died.
Above us, every cell door opened.
